Is the GameCube lineup underrated?

I don't have too much to say on this topic, I am just curious as to what other people think. I think it is. The lineup is not N64 quality, but chances are that by the end of the generation, the GameCube will have three games in the GameRankings top 5 (RE4, Metroid Prime, and assuming Zelda will be as good as we all hope). I own more GameCube games than Nintendo 64 games (23 vs. 20 respectively), while I know I am getting one, two more games for GameCube, but I own almost all the big games for the N64.

seems like there's just about a handful of games left worth getting for the system, but that aside, it's still very much well worth getting for the exclsuives alone.
 
I think it's analogous to the Dreamcast library - there's quality stuff in every genre and a few true classics in several, but it's not very deep.

Anyway, I bought a lot of the "popular" games for GC and wound up hating them:

Eternal Darkness - Pissed me off more than I enjoyed it.

F-Zero GX - Sloppy but slick. I don't know how Amusement Vision pulled that off but they did.

Harvest Moon AWL - What the fuck?

Tales of Symphonia - Shove-a-needle-in-your-cock painful

However, I decided to go my own way on getting games that I enjoyed and have had a second honeymoon with the GC and am fucking loving it:

Alien Hominid - Great Contra/Metal Slug clone

Bust-A-Move 3000 - Tight game.

Puyo Pop Fever - Awesome puzzler.

Super Robot Wars GC - Awesome game.

I want to get both Bomberman games, Doshin, Animal Crossing, Shikigami no Shiro 2, and JPN Sonic Gems

When did I ever mention only upcoming games? I am talking about the system lineup as a whole. I'm impressed you managed to find a way to bring the Xbox 360 in here.
 
I disagree. The only Dreamcast game I spent a TON of time with was PSO. Skies of Arcadia was fantastic, but I consider Tales of Symphonia to be better, because when I played Skies I hadn't played many RPGs. Shenmue was a great experience but I didn't find it stellar.
 
It's not underrated. The A-list games were too few and far between to be considered a great lineup. Prime and RE4 were as good as gaming gets, but a few perfect games does not a great lineup make. Anyway those games got plenty of individual recognition already.
 
It depends on what you want. i don't usually buy more than 10 or 15 games for any system in a given generation. The games i have for my cube, easily stack up to the games i've bought for my xbox or ps2... i've bought just as many cube games as i have xbox or ps2 games, and i've enjoyed them just as much and maybe even a little more...

for my cube i've bought...

1. metroid prime
2. metroid prime 2
3. tales of symphonia
4. paper mario 2 (traded it in after finishing)
5. eternal darkness (traded it in to buy re4, will rebuy)
6. resident evil 4
7. super mario sunshine
8. zelda: TWW
9. F-zero GX
10. Pikmin 2
11. zelda collectors disk (traded after finishing OOT)

i'll almost certainly buy the new zelda, and fire emblem is on my radar as well as battalion wars...

so when it's all over i'll have bought 12 or 14 games for my cube... and every one of them has been great. The ps2 and xbox might equal that, but they probably won't pass it... also, metroid prime, metroid prime 2 and resident evil 4 are each good enough to buy the system for all by themselves. So for me, the cube has been a great little system. I bought my cube when MP came out, and it convinced to spend all gaming money on consoles and give up computers for gaming.

It's underrated by the people who would outright reject it. There's plenty of great games that absolutely should not be missed. Some are my favorite games this gen and ever. (F-Zero GX, Pikmin 2, etc...)

Its library really can't compare to PS2 or even XBX these days, but it's a solid system that is an absolute steal at 99 bucks.

Whoever said over-rated by N-fans, underrated by the rest is probably right. For a Nintendo fan, there's shit-loads to own.

In terms of third party content it's not so great for western style games, but it's great for quirky japanese games and arcade oriented multiplayer experiences.

Those who haven't even tried Gamecube and it's most lauded titles are doing themselves a disservice. Try before you judge.

39 games. About 12 of which I could have bought first on other systems. A couple of those were out on Gamecube first. I like a good majority of these games... the few bad eggs aren't worth anything in terms of trade in value and thats why I still have them.

This is compared to what I now own on PS2 and Xbox after selling stuff I don't play anymore: 7 PS2, 15 Xbox. It all depends on what you like. For a lot of people PS2 is obviously enough. Other people still require an Xbox or Gamecube - either for playing on their own or to suppliment their PS2. That just seems to be the way it is.

I personally feel the GC is underrated and missed out on by many, but I do think some part of it is down to personal preference and other systems having better versions of third party games (ie. online only on Xbox, better graphics on Xbox) or simply more of them (ie. PS2)

Not sure why these threads prompt some owners of the system in question to post their collection of titles for it.

Because some people don't own 39 games for any system. Let alone where the great majority of them are actually good. Bare in mind I'm well aware of the stupidly large collections some people here own... to an extent I'm talking about regular people you or I might know in a more local sense.

I posted mine because people seem to treat first and second party Nintendo games as somehow different from any other kind of system exclusive... in reality, they're the best kind of exclusive to consider if you're looking at a Gamecube.

But some people is blind, normally N64 fans that hate GCN.

GCN is better than N64 and DC and is just funny how a lot of people in these days overhype DC and N64.

What he said. The Gamecube's library is vastly overrated; if poorly conceived and executed games like Mario Sunshine or Starfox Assault had to compete with the likes of Jak or Ninja Gaiden they would get clobbered. And don't get me started on the lack of racing and fighting games. The Gamecube is half a system, maybe less.

Is rodiculous that when the people counts a third party AAA game is a good point for Xbox and PS2 but a bad point for GCN.

You're entitled to feel that way, and I'm sure there's many here that agree...

but I'd like to see a list of whats so pants shittingly awesome on the other consoles. I just wanna see how many people can come up with.. it helps if they're not too obscure and people actually buy em, but list whatever you like.

GC is definitely underrated in general, but as a system I'd still rank it below DC. Above N64 though.

I know a lot of DC games came to the GC, and improved, but that wasn't the same as experiencing them for the first time. Plus GC misses out on Jet Set Radio, Rez, Samba, Chu Chu Rocket, Shenmue, Virtual On, VF3, Rival Schools, Power Stone and others ...

DC just felt like a really complete system if you were into those sort of games. GC has it's definite classics, and it's still my most played console at the moment, but as a system it's just never felt like it knew what it wanted to be. It's a bit of a mess. And when you add things like Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker not quite cutting it, it also takes the shine off things.

I'll look back on GC as a great little console, but not one I loved like DC or SNES.

This means what exactly to people who don't care about racing and fighting games? If you're into adventure or platformer games, you would probably say the same in reverse about the xbox.

I am into those genres, and I don't feel that way. The Xbox is clearly focused on the types of games that I don't like - FPS, stealth, war sims - but at the same time, it has enough support from enough developers that I have about twenty games in the genres I do like, almost all of which are meatier than anything I played on my 'Cube.

The PS2 clearly has the most rounded library. Being the dominant console, how could it not.

If you buy GCN for the Nintendo games, and the few others that came out that were great like ED, then you will be happily satisfied, If you buy the system in place of a PS2 or XBOX, then you may be dissappointed. No real online play and definitley missing some games.

Just take each system for what it is worth I say.
 
The only console is the actual generation that has a complete catalogue in all the game genres is PS2.
 
Maybe if I didn't read GAF, where it seems to be overrated. It seems to be the most dissapointing as far as sequels or hyped titles that I've bought, but it's had a few gems that I've really enjoyed, especially RE4 (the best title on the system by leagues). My big feeling with the GC is that they didn't try very hard to secure great content or make the best games the best and since I'm a consumer who buys too much video game content, the disparity really stood out for me.

Luckily the market really noticed the weaknesses and you were able to get into a GC for comparably cheap to it's competitors. I'd say if you waited for that drop in price (which was relatively early with free games, etc.) you would feel it was a better value. I suspect the same is likely to happen next gen unless there is more than a pr shake up.
 
I think it's underrated, but not incredibly. There is a lot of good software on the system, but there is a reason why more people don't like it.

The GameCube isn't friendly to people that are fans of any specfic genres. You can't say that it's the best system for platformers, FPSs, fighters, etc. You can't actually even say that it's a *good* system for any particular game style. That really hurts it, because most people aren't going to try every game that's out there. They want something familiar, and they want to experience it in a number of ways.

Their impact 1999-2000 is different than how it was 2001-2003. I mean, if Tekken Tag Tournament was ported to Xbox and came out next month lets say, there'd be no doubt that it would have made less of an impact. As much as I had fun with the DC Crazy Taxi, I have no interest in getting the GC version. I did get Skies Legends and Sonic Adventure DX. That was it for DC to GC ports.

Of course but you'd break the bank keeping up with all of them, even at budget prices. GC offers good releases at a slower rate. There is some advantages of shortages, well, what I said is pretty much it.
 
To me, I don't care whether the GCN line-up was under/overrated in the least. What I cared was I've been having a damn good time this generation playing the exclusives and all the 3rd party stuff (however small) from the GCN side of things. I won't bother listing the exclusives because everyone knows what they are already.
 
Dreamcast didn't last long enough to have a great lineup. What it did have was a good start, and some great arcade-like experiences, but it lacks a whole lot and has very little depth.
