Is the retail Killzone better than the review copies?

Movies and stills of the game look great. I want to play it and I'm curious what others here think.

The A.I. does look dumb as dirt but I have fun shot gunning the Flood in Halo so sometimes my needs and wants in the A.I. dept are not so grand.

No. And if you think Halo AI is dumb, step right in. There's a lot of nifty seams and slowdown that you haven't seen in the stills too. It's not a total pile of crap, but they overshot themselves. Online is pretty good.

And the game has the worst sniping ever! Sure it looks nice but it's too difficult to keep your aim steady, especially with those analog sticks

So true, I just move the cursor around until it gets in the general area of an enemy. Why bother trying to aim when the scope won't stay steady and the enemy is moving? But Killzone does have a good amount of atmosphere, I'll give it that.

I keep wondering why Killzone scores so much better in german magazines than in US media. It keeps getting scores > 85%. Did Guerilla implement some last minute changes in the pal version to make it play better?

It's an average FPS...doesn't really do anything great to the genre. It's probably worth it when it drops to $20...but I wouldn't bother playing it if you already have access to something better, like Halo 2

The story I found to be the most interesting of the game. The cutscenes are well directed and the later weapons you get to use are great fun. If Sony is serious about releasing Killzone 2 for the PS2 still, then they should really take time to polish it up to be a great contender.

Sounds great to me. Easy sniping kills FPS for me. People just camp and take poeple out with little skill. That does not equal fun to me.

When I played the demo, I couldn't stand the head bob. It's the first FPS that annoyed me in that respect.
IAWTP. There was way too much camera bobbing, like when RELOADING (>_<) the camera went haywire and just tilted in every other direction, teh annoying.

I picked the game up. I actually like the sniping. Very similar to Goldeneye in that respect.

Yes, the game is very path based. Environments are constructed much like a film set where the stuff in the background are just placards with images painted on them and you are guided through the level like a theme park ride. The enemy A.I. is pretty simple thus far but I don't mind that too much.

I'm currently on the 2nd level and have just wasted the APC vehicle thing with the rocketlauncher. Hopefully the levels open up a bit more so I can move about them a little more freely. For what amounts to the teaching the player the rules of the game in the first 2 stages I think it is working quite well.

The game certainly looks amazing when it is displaying the way it should. Certainly the most moody FPS I've ever seen.

The head bob is a little nauseating but I like it more than a regular flat camera like in Quake. The only problem with the reload is that I don't think the camera orientates itself in the direction you were looking before the reload occured.

Rented it and played on-line exclusively. It was a lot of fun.

I disagree with the complaints about sniping.

Sniping in Killzone is done exceptionally well for a game in which I can't use a mouse to properly aim. Just move your reticle in the general area of your target, then track. It's really intuitive and less of a pain in the ass than the constant adjustment of a game like Socom 2.

Let me put it this way.

I've got 150+ hours logged into Socom 2, and none of that involved sniping. On my third day with Killzone, I was effectively sniping people with one shot after a little practice. Killzone sniping = AWESOME!

The atmosphere rocks. The music rocks. The on-line play modes rock.

I want to play some more, but I'm not shelling out $50! I'll wait for Greatest Hits.

I've been playing the crap out of it the last hour. The linearity bothers me just about the same as Halo 2's linearity...as in not at all. The AI is the only thing I can say is bad about the game right now and even then, once in a while it'll do something somewhat clever.

The environments are incredible. The cool bombed out fort with all the glass and the water coolers is excellent. That one factory thing where you climb up the stairways and do battle between the buildings was wicked.

I'm just at the part that you seen in the movies where you are in the courtyard and the ship crashes into the cement pole.

I really like this game so far!

I'm stuck at the part at the train station or whatever where you have to give Luger cover fire. I don't know what to do.

Is it the part where she crawls under the crack in the wall? If so look out the holes your men are standing by, use the sniper rifle and you should see some guys peaking out every now and then from the building across from you. Pick them off one by one till she starts talking to you.

So uh I'm playing this game, I'm at the 2nd campaign. People always praise the music, but I have yet to hear anything in-game. WTF? Is my copy defective or is the whole game going to be just sound effects and voices?

P.S.: This game is the very definition of mediocre. I wonder why am I still playing. :P

I don't even remember any music during gameplay when I played it. Only music I can remember is the intro

I think this game has been unfairly panned. The environments, as someone already said, are incredible, with particle effects abuzz everywhere you turn. The AI isn't that bad -- no worse than your typical FPS. Sure, in that respect, it doesn't come close to Halo 2, but the level design and ambience crush Bungie's blockbuster. If they had been given a little more time to iron out the occasional wrinkle, this game would be AAA. As it is, problems notwithstanding, it's the best FPS to come out this year on a console.

Guerrilla FUCKING SUCKS for making the no-music decision. Going by the intro you can tell the composer is very talented. I don't know if I'll be able to stand 10-15 hours of average gameplay with no music at all. Bleh, and this thing used to be one of my most anticipated games.

The big problem with the game is that its formula rarely changes. You walk into a room and about 5 guys try to kill you. You wipe them out and continue onto the next room where another 5 guys try to kill you.

I don't mind it because I find that core gameplay entertaining pretty well because the simple act of blowing the crap out of the enemies is fun. The guns feel great when you fire them and the hit effects within the environment are great. I also enjoy blowing up the glass, watercoolers, popmachines, billboards, etc.

The reviews of the game are totally off though. For a game of this quality they should really be an 8/10. The 6/10 - 7/10 reviews are total backlash bullshit. Also, any FPS released the month of Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 is going to be held to unrealisitic scrutiny especially considering the PS2 hardware.

The level I'm on right now is in the mall with the escalators and the glass ceiling. I haven't seen environments like this in an FPS outside of Half-Life 2. The open air courtyard where the dropshit lets the enemy out was incredible.

See, I always thought "playing the crap out of [something]" meant that you would play it for a significant period. Considering that you played for just an hour, is your interpretation different? Like, did you press the buttons down really hard or stare very firmly at the screen? Would you yell at the characters often and cheer them on when they did well?

Haha. I could just tell from your first few posts in this thread that you wanted to like the game more than anything and weren't going to settle for the poor consensus. :P

Your right. Actually I meant to say that I made significant ground in the game in a one hour period.

It means you played it to the degree that the game wouldn't run anymore. These DRE's are quite common :(

BTW, what the fruck is the point of having a volume slide for music in the options screen!?
For the cutscene music :P
All the cutscenes have great dialogue too(reminds me alot of the Getaway).

I don't get you guys. I have no axe to grind with this game beyond the fact that it didn't turn out as well as I hoped, but I just can't understand ....I don't know, just the lowered expectations you have for what a game should do well. I guess this is the same way it got some of those inflated reviews I've seen. I don't think Halo was perfect, or the second coming of Christos, etc. but it's level of execution and polish are on a whole different level from software like this. Yea, there's a core of intriguing aesthetics on display, but it all comes together so half-assed.

As I've said many times, I like it, but it's not close to being the best game in any genre and not near what was implied by many in it's development.

Well, this game suddenly got better. Playing as Rico rocks, he makes the helghast look like a bunch of pussies!

Anyway...the music volume slider controls all the sounds in the cutscenes(effects, music and voices). I think Guerrila intended to have an in-game soundtrack, but ran out of time. This game seems very unfinished. It's too bad, though, 'cause you can see the potential.

When you get to play as Hakha, and use this:
http://ps2media.ign.com/ps2/image/article/547/547708/killzone-20040913105655580.jpg in conjuction with the laser guided rifle included
, its all over from there for the Helghast :D

I'm in the swamp section. I'm really digging this game now.

Yes its using the basic push forward attack push forward attack enemy formula but come on...this game kicks ass. The cool mood on the docks with the ocean waves splashing up and the rain pouring down was phenomonenal. I also thought the Mall and the Slums were incredible as far as the more recent levels I've played through goes. I'm really looking forward to the Snow maps.

The grenade timing and throwing is excellent. The weapons all have great balance - except for RICO and that chain gun that seems to never run out of ammo. Its fun mowing the eneny down with it but I prefer going in with the lighter weapons with the zoom toggle.

Most of the LOD problems you don't even notice during the game. It is pretty easy to become aware of where and when to expect them. If you rush up to a friendly character you're almost guaranteed to see the really low res version and then the highpoly hires body and face pop in, and then two seconds later start seeing his lips move if he is talking to you.

Sadly some of the more detailed stuff in the environment does come in too late. The deploy boats for example only become high detail when you are about a meter from them. You can actually still see the low LOD inside them if you look closely.

The worst level I've seen in the game thus far was that walk through the park with all the sakura trees. The LOD problems there were just punishing. They really should have edited that entire sequence out as it was embarassing.

They do have a pretty impressive streaming engine when it works. Hell, a lot of the near LOD textures are 128x128 and I swear I've seen some 256x256 ones in there too.

They should have taken the extra month and worked out a few more of the kinks and shipped middle of December.

All in all, Halo 2 is the better game without question due to its genral level of design and interactivity but it just doesn't have this sort of atmosphere. I have never seen anything on the PS2 with this sort of detail in the levels. If they sequel it up for PS3 and make the game design more modern then the game is going to be huge.

The atmosphere and art design keeps me coming back for more.

Just played a mission with that stealthy character...holy crap the thermal goggles make me sick. The blur just hurts my eyes...

The dialouge is really good as is the voice acting. Brian Cox did an awesome job as the leader of the Helgaust. I'm actually looking forward to the cutscenes as they are done so well.

I played the demo I got in the mail... it's so bad. First off aiming is shit. I also ran into a room full of enemies killed some and stood to the right of a few and they just stood still until I shot them. The game looks pretty but the gameplay sucks.

When you play this game, you need to seriously lower the sensitivity of both analog sticks in the options menu. It improves your aiming much so, that you can get headshots easily now.

Short bursts work really well to improve the aim. Laying on the trigger just makes your fire go everywhere.

The humans' gun with the grenade launcher has better accuracy than the Helgaust gun with the shotgun on the bottom. As I rarely carry the sniper rifle I use that MG to do all my distance firing.

The pistol has great accuracy but has a low rate of fire and you can't zoom with it.

My favorite weapon in the game is the 100 round machine gun the Elite's carry with them.

Has anyone played on hard to see if the enemy gets a bit more clever?

Yes. But you won't notice more cleverness. What happens is that a lot of those shots you notice on normal chewing up the area around you will hit. It's sort of an enemy accuracy mod. And if I'm not mistaken, it takes even longer to put some of them down. It is more of a challenge though.

I got the demo today, looks good. I like it. Maybe I'll buy it for online play since Halo2 is bugging the shit outta me.

I don't get comments like this(taken from IGN's review):

"Another contributing factor to why we're actually smiling while playing a linear and rather unintelligent first-person shooter is the audio. The orchestral music is simply fantastic."

Were they playing another game or are they just shitty writers? And I don't get the people who say the music is fantastic, it's barely audible in the cutscenes.

Anyway...I'm stuck on the reverse D-Day-like level. Damn tank won't fucking go down.

Too bad about the AI then :(. The official Killzone site, which I think there are 3 of them! so do some searching, has the music for the game available to listen to.
