Is there a reason why the 2TB Xbox Series X Expansion card is £235 and not less than £140?

Proprietary bullshit

Funny thing is that it was the cheaper alternative back when the gen started. Man how the turns tabled and now its essentially their vita memory cards.

Console makers making money off people. No different than game prices, or PS Vita memory, gamepads at $90 CDN (same price as a game). or console makers getting charge for play online, when game makers can figure out how to maintain servers with free online for PC gamers (unless it's one of small number sub plan MMO games).

At least specialized peripherals can be seen as a take it or leave it option.

How can anyone explain why first party game prices can be more expensive on PSN or MS than Steam. Or why a third party game selling on all platforms, why Steam is still usually cheaper when they all take the same 30% cut? Only reason I can think of is console makers making extra $10 off console gamers, while PC storefronts dont.

Well how's that working out for them?

Probably well. They're basically charging double market value to anyone unfortunate enough to need to expand their console storage.

The storage is 1 of 100 reasons that Xbox is a brand in its death throes, and they're all self-inflicted.

Probably very well. They sold 6k 1TB and 3K 2TB on Amazon US alone in the past month. Factor in other retailers and multiply that over the course of the generation, and yeah…

There are SSDs out there that are less than £140 with better specs. Why can't MS just release the connectors and let people use their own brand. This is ridiculous.
Because they don’t want to be left out of the or nightmares Sonys winning at this time! Series x with 2 tv is now same price as ps5 pro!

Honestly the reason is that Microsoft got a great deal on the cost of the hardware and gets a good margin in the drive!

Zero reasons all console don’t allow us to replace drives at our choice.

Apparently because limiting disk space makes people buy more games.

It's the perfect example of MS not understanding the market. They make a few bucks in royalties on each drive but nobody wants them because they're so overpriced. Meanwhile, you can get a cheapo 2TB Kingston NV2 for $120 that works perfectly well on PS5.

Same goes for their idiotic wireless headphone policy for that matter. A $30 dongle allowed me to get AptX audio from my PS5 while the $200 headphones I bought for my Xbox are simply trash.

Moderated wildly
Hardware wise, this is the only shit decision xbox made with the series x.

I get that they planned for people to be able to go around to a fruends house etc with the expansion card, but covid hit and no one does that anyway.

Now there's not enough boxes out there for people to need to do it at all.

It's great if you have multiple xboxs in your house but it's not worth the premium.

Poor decision.

Yeah it's terrible. Should have just had an M2 Port.

It cost me £65 to get 1TB of storage for my PS5 last year. You're looking at £120 for that on Xbox.

Heck they could release an official adapter for M2 2230 SSD's if they wanted, with the same form factor as their current expansion cards, but nope. Profit margins are through the roof.

Third party games tend to go on sale in shifts across platform. It's rare a game is discounted on all platforms at once. I don't often see the MSRP of a game different on one platform than another. It does happen, but it's not frequent.

Different publishers handle things differently. Until recently, Xbox put all of its first party games on Gamepass on Day One. Now they're starting to require the highest level for that privilege. PlayStation reduces the price of its first party titles as they age and eventually they make their way to the higher tiers of Plus. Nintendo almost never lowers the base price of its first party games except for occasional sales which rarely seem to drop below $40 when I look over them.

Some people can afford it tho, it's not for everyone so the price is clearly right okay. /s

It sucks that they went with that solution. Its hard to bring prices down with that.

Yep, pcie4 drives are cheap.
NAND prices actually got a bit more expensive because the memory manufacturers scaled down production somewhat. September of last year I bought two SN850X 1TB drives for 70 euro each. Now they are like 20 euro more expensive.

Cloud saves would've solved that. This is a way to try and get more money out of you. Should've gone the PS5 route.

I'm honestly surprised. I don't know anyone that owns one.

Sony was criticized alot at the reveal of PS5 for using standard slot SSD. In the end their approach was way better than Xbox and more consumer friendly.
I have found the Xbox solution to be more expensive but way more consumer friendly. I have two of them loaded with games and I take them to my cabin up north and to friends and family. They are plug and play, unlike the Sony solution where you are required to reformat/wipe the drive any time you swap it out. I don’t mind paying more for convenience.

Being twice as expensive and single purpose (usable only with Xbox consoles) is not consumer-friendly. Convenient, perhaps, but not consumer-friendly.

🤔 cloud saves? if they don’t own the game then cloud saves are a moot point.

Also going the PS5 route would mean I would need to reformat my NVME drive and redownload all my games (on their console) so I can play it at a friends, then when I get home repeat so I can play it at mine. Also am not even sure if installing a new drive invalidates my fiends NVME drive (if they have one) so they would need to reformat and redownload all there stuff.

Seems you can move them to other consoles, (requires the database to be rebuilt) so yeah MS 😡

Still the expansion cards on Xbox work like USB devices, plug and play. (Can be setup to be standalone or just as expanded space) Online is still required for validation but that takes 2 secs compared to having to redownload GBs of data or rebuild databases.

————————

My take on why they went the route they went is for 2 reasons.

1. Can charge more
2. Everyone gets the same performance

Would I have preferred being able to plonk a NVME drive in, yeah would have saved me £60 (a got my 1TB expansion card for £170) but I know what am doing, most won’t. So buying the wrong types or NVME or the wrong read/write speeds etc… would cause more issues than it’s worth for most.

And to be honest I didn’t actually need the extra space, I just wanted it as it was on sale. There is more than enough default space for most people.

They only charge what people are willing to pay. People who buy expansion cards are most likely the hard core user, people who spend hundreds of pounds over the year on Xbox
