Xbox Quietly Releases New 4TB Expansion Card For Series X/S

this is why I think their next 'modular' PC/console will probably be expensive as fuck.
I mean just look at Surface line cost and they should tell us all we need to know.

And yeah, $430 for 4TB of "slower" storage is just bad. It's a result of the proprietary format, and just more expensive approach.

I never saw peole bashing Xbox for it, mind or saying how much better the PS3 was over the 360
What a difference buying a few studios can make ....

I did, but it wasn't much of an argument considering the launch price of PS3 was so much higher than 360.

What does buying studios have to do with any of this?

"300 dollars and you have to buy the console for 300 more ? That is the most expensive storage expansion in the world and it doesn't appeal to gamers cause there is no games on it which makes it not a very good gaming console"

Ffs they should just allow the Xbox to use any m.2 instead of the SN530. That way we can just get one of those adapters on Amazon and use any m.2.

People like you seem to forget the trick Xbox tried to play with 360 and custom casing for a basic HD and the eye-watering price it looked to charge for a 60GB Hard Drive
Funny how that was never an issue then
People like me?

Buying a few studios?

WTF are you talking about?

I just relayed a bit of info during the Series prototyping

I wasn't implying anything was better or worse or talking about 360 vs PS3 days

The hate Xbox gets on NeoGAF these days is taking the piss and all becasse they bought a few studios. I agree the asking price is too high for the storage card, so was it for the 360 HardDrive before Xbox brought out the 250Gb model

So this week I am an Xbox hater because last week I was an Xbox fanboy?

I can't keep up between all my shitposting

That's for the birds. It's a royal pain in the ass having to unlug the console and all the wires every time you want to change the drive on the PS5 (and I have 2) On the Xbox its so much easier, but where I wished the slot was on the front of the unit rather than the back.

Both formats have their pros on cons...

It depends on when you feel like playing a certain game, and you always get that urge to play that certain game after you swapped the storage card, much like on the Xbox, but at least I don't have to unplug the leads and move the console to swap the drive
Both methods have pros and cons.

The Xbox ambassador program is over you know you can stop defending everything Xbox does. (y)

Proprietary storage has always been hated on. PS Vita was the poster child of proprietary storage hate before Xbox Series was even a thing. This has nothing to do with buying studios.

I have a 1TB card I picked up on eBay for a good price when I first bought my Series S years ago. I don't think it's a "fuckup" at all and provides, like you say, a more elegant solution than slapping on an external SSD for those that want it. However, the prices are indeed a bit steep.
That's the fuck up. When they priced it out during development, they should have known that the price made it not make sense. Storage has some of most volatile prices amongst all computer components. This makes it so you cannot take never advantage of low prices or cross shop manufacturers/brands. Ease of insertion is really the only thing this has going for it.

If you agree that the price is too high what are you complaining about? Valid criticism is now "Xbox hate"?

These expansion cards are great, and I finally caved and bought a 1tb myself. But the price of the 4tb card is just silly. Absolutely crazy. I can't imagine they'll sell many of these.

Sony tried this shit for generations, and just when they gave up... MS thinks it's a great idea. Genius.
Apologies... but generations? I only really remember PS Vita cards. PSP cards could be used in digital cameras too so im excluding them in this comparison (and won't count memory cards from 'ancient days').

fark I paid AU$289 for a lexar nm790 4tb ssd with heatsink for my PS5 a while back it's AU$100 more at AU$389 now

AU$289 = US$187-190

And this is why I don't have an expansion card on my series x.
I bought a western digital 1tb card for my ps5 on sale for $65 around there. (still expensive but not xbox expensive).

No way was I paying xbox prices.
MS used to be way more user friendly in the OG era. 360 started this proprietary crap.

I was talking about Sony and proprietary memory cards.

I don't think I ever went above 1 TB on my Series X. I'd rather buy a Switch 2 with that amount of money.

I can survive with 1TB if I really need to but 2TB is my sweet spot. Me and my friends hop around from MP game to game depending on who wants to play what. So I need to have some big pretty big MP games constantly installed.

It would be great if you can use it on pc. Its damn annoying wanting to upgrade an internal ssd on a gaming pc. If you can just plug this to a usb 3.0 port I would buy one. Alas.
You wouldn't, because unless they altered the design, these SSD's are the cheapest of the cheap and cacheless meaning they don't even have the expensive logic part of the BoM like a regular quality NVME such as a Samsung 980 Pro

One of their many fuckups. Yes, it's more elegant than removing a panel and swapping out an NVMe drive, but the cost is not worth it. The PS5 solution isn't even that cumbersome. The only annoying part is removing those stupid faceplates.
The solution isn't elegant at all, the card is literally erect 69 miles out from the consoles back side.

I meant that it was a good idea in principle. It's just so easy to use and convenient in that it takes up no space. I do love that it is an option and I hope that it remains for whatever console / Windows Box they make next.

I'd say it's not even elegant when you have something sticking out of your console vs one that is part of the console built in. It's just slightly more convenient if you move the drive around and I'm not sure how many people are doing that and paying £425 for the privilege. That's more than the price of the competitors entire console just for some storage. Insanity.

I just now learned that the drives stick out like that. I had no idea. What a horrible idea. I had a USB adapter that got bent once because it stuck out like this. I just assumed it pushed all the way in and clicked or something. Then you push it again to get it to pop out.

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd look up all the turfers defending it's portability "convenience" nobody ever does when expanding their own console storage. That one should "pay" for that.

Losers, lol.

Must still be dreaming.

It makes sense if your goal is to not sell hardware

Finally a task they are good at
They want to sell hardware, just not physical based.

1.Quietly remove physical based hardware
2.Quietly releases larger sized digital storage
3.Continie pushing digital/rental only games.

It's clear what MS is doing behind the scenes.

My favorite was Dark and Riky who ended their Gaf terms when the program ended... but anyways, they would say how "convenient it was to bring it over your friends and put in their Xbox and play your games," or "hot swapping between the 4 Xboxes you have in your home." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Nobody even does that shit in 2025, especially the Covid years.

I think you might be right. They are not shying away from increased prices for the remainder of this generation. The next generation price increase will be less sticker shock based on this new normal.

Dude, wtf, lol.

You could buy an entire game library for that money or a Switch 2 or PS5. The opportunity costs of buying this extra memory is astounding.
