Is There Still A Need For A Select Button?

Get with the times, Sony, at least rename this useless button to somethig else.

Quite a bunch of games still use the select button actually..
And the name is still good, because it usually opens up a selection screen.

The select button is persists only because the NES controller had it.

This is just symbolic of the fact that console gaming is stuck in the rut of what Nintendo created in the 1980s. The market leadership may be in different hands but the model is still essentially the NES. Ironically, Nintendo gets the most criticism for trying to remodel its own edifice.

Except do you really need a Select or menu button, doesn't the Start button serve almost the same purpose?

Select was always a weird button, even on NES.

In GBA games select is used mostly for activating rarely used features if it's used at all.

Select button >>>>>>>>>>>> Useless Z-button

A shoulder button is far more versatile than 'select', which you have to press with the thumb and therefore can't combine with an analog stick or d-pad on the same hand. Select just becomes start's jealous stepsister.

BTW, I don't think the PS3 controller sucks because it has a select button.
I actually don't think it sucks at all.
The strength of tradition is funny though.

I really think that the Z-button should be seen (and used) only as a 'select' button... To open a menu, change configuration, but not for actual play.

In this case, there's no real difference between both buttons.

Eh, I'm more annoyed that the damned Start and Select buttons are made of rubber and not plastic or something more durable. This goes for both DS2 and the stock GBA. But at least the SP, Micro, NDS and that DS3 shot shows otherwise.

DS3? I thought they lost some copyright-infringement case so they can't make Dual Shocks anymore...

It comes in handy, especially for calling quick time-outs in sports games, without having to go into a menu.

I don't care if they change the name of it, but I don't think it's a good idea to start removing buttons off of controllers. Some games absolutely could use as many buttons as they can fit on the damn thing.

I don't know what's funny or dated about a select button.

What about A and B? ( oh shit i just laughed!! )

If you look at any of the Sony controllers the A and B buttons are gone.. :)

I never understood the need for a select button. Even during the NES days. Why do I need to press select instead of down? Sony I can understand, backward compatibility with the Ps2/1, but the revolution bringing it back strikes me as odd. I know there's the virtual console but they could have used an existing button for that.

And if you look at the Xbox controller, you'll see it just flipped the SNES layout around letter AND color wise.

I simply must question the existence of these buttons I rarely use.

Choice confounds me, you see.

is there any reason to get rid of it? there are a handful of games that use all of a dual shock's functions, and in those cases some little thing can be neatly assigned to select.

I agree. I think Nintendo should have just named it as such to avoid confusion. The Z button on the N64 was crucial for gameplay, whereas the Z button o nthe GC is defintiely more like the select button from previous systems.

There's lot of other things going on in that photo more amusing than the 'select' button. Seriously, I'm wearing a PS3 controller print-out with eye holes as a mask next Halloween.

But with the GC's Z button it's so small and often times out of reach. I have to move my index finger in a wierd way to hit it.

I guess that' a reasonable complaint. I have rather thin fingers so my index fits comfortably before the shoulder button.

I remember reading that the Z button was added to the pad by developer request. I'm guessing Nintendo found doubled shoulder buttons a bit too intimidating so they met the developers half way with one small Z button.

The N64's Z button was perfectly placed, BTW. It's my favorite button on any controller. :p
