Is this joke racist?

I don't think it's that far of a stretch for someone to misconstrue what I said, though obviously I'm sensitive to the connection because I'm worried about it.

I'm not hyper PC, but if I heard someone making a joke about crack and Oakland, it wouldn't be a stretch to think they are referring to the fact that Oakland has a higher density of black people as compared to the rest of the Bay Area, and that they were inferring that said black people smoked crack. I'm worried that my lame joke will be taken in that manner.

I'm not sure how being aware of stereotypes that people make makes me a racist?

Uh, given the fact that the higher density of black people is on your mind yes it was racist for you to type.

Also, stop participating in dumb e-mail spam.

So I came up with a lame joke that I sent in a mass email to my co-workers (long story short, it was an email chain of dumb jokes):

"I went to a free bone density screening in Oakland a few weeks ago. It was not all it was cracked up to be."

Not until later did I realize this joke could be misconstrued as being about crack in Oakland, rather than the lame joke about cracking bones due to low density that I intended it to be.

Am I boned? (hur hur)

Man I just genuinely feel sorry for you

Butzopower anti-humor isn't gonna be received well in NeoGAF land.

And yes, you accidentally made a not-so-hidden crack joke. Don't pack pedal on it, just don't say anything. Most people will probably just be as befuddled as the people in this thread are.

It's obviously too late not to have already sent said backpedaling email, and you know that.

EDIT: And obviously I don't expect GAF to enjoy the real meat of that joke, which is why I indulge them in the situational absurdity of the unintended fallout from it.

actually, i'd say you're pretty racist for saying jokes about crack in Oakland is racist, because you're implying that only black people take crack. in oakland.

Are you a human being? cus' we have something called self awareness.

Its not racist or maybe I'm just saying that because I don't get the joke and I don't get what's supposed to be funny about it.

But on a slightly related note, isn't a mass emailing of "stupid jokes" a really dumb idea in and of itself? Like a serious case of misinterpretation, HR complaint, and swift firing waiting to happen? Of course that depends on where you work.

as already said by many people, the joke in itself IS NOT racist in the slightest its just absolutely terrible, but to think of it as racist IS racist

How folks don't realize that this is normally never ever a good idea is beyond me.

Mass emails are for memo's. In any case this joke probably won't start anything. But still..... stop doing that.

That's just bad.

I thought this was going to be a joke about black guys having large penises, then a whole load of arguing about it being a compliment and not a derogatory generalisation.

My coworker asked me how to ask the dry cleaner to starch his shirts this morning.

And then he claimed it was a joke.

I still told him to eat bag of dicks.

What if I, a foreigner, having no idea that Oakland has crack and/or black people, tell this joke, will that make me racist as well?

Ancient Korean secret huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh?

(I would have told him to shove that bag of dicks up his ass...I think it's almost hilarious working with awkwardly racist coworkers)

I would have never thought racism until it was pointed out, and even then I think the intent of your joke was obviously about a bone cracking, not about Oakland.

Why did you even have to put Oakland in the joke? Why name ANY city? It implies that the punch line has something to do with the location, which it doesn't according to you. Unless this is your own personal experiment to see which GAFers are prejudiced, by seeing which ones actually see racism in that joke. I'm on to you, OP!

I keep combing over the OP's posts and the joke itself and I'm drawing a blank. I can't even comprehend what lead him to believe this joke is racist in the slightest. Racist because you're assuming people will think you meant black people in Oakland are on crack? What?
