Is this joke racist?

Why did you even have to put Oakland in the joke? Why name ANY city? It implies that the punch line has something to do with the location, which it doesn't according to you. Unless this is your own personal experiment to see which GAFers are prejudiced, by seeing which ones actually see racism in that joke. I'm on to you, OP!

I posted it earlier in the thread, but I came up with the joke after seeing an event on meetup.com for a free bone density scanning in Oakland. I was using a real background for the basis of the joke.

May I ask why you're those people who send email chain of dumb jokes to other people in the company? Also, that isn't a wise idea.

I don't think it's that far of a stretch for someone to misconstrue what I said, though obviously I'm sensitive to the connection because I'm worried about it.

I'm not hyper PC, but if I heard someone making a joke about crack and Oakland, it wouldn't be a stretch to think they are referring to the fact that Oakland has a higher density of black people as compared to the rest of the Bay Area, and that they were inferring that said black people smoked crack. I'm worried that my lame joke will be taken in that manner.

I'm not sure how being aware of stereotypes that people make makes me a racist?
This explanation sounds more racist than the original joke, to be honest. You seem to be implying that there's a strong association between black people and crack.

It wasn't like I just suddenly sent out that dumb joke in an email by itself. This was in a side mailing list, that you have to subscribe to be on, meant for posting entertaining things. Someone made a really stupid joke, which was followed by more really stupid jokes. The joke I posted was my contribution.

We occasionally have this at work. There's always that one person who makes a lame joke and ends the chain. Did that happen to you?

Your first order of business should reply to the mailing list and apologize profusely for a joke that may have been misinterpreted as potentially racist. I mean, because what other conclusion could you make out of it? They're obviously offended.

That's the only way you'll know for certain. The only way.
