Is this possible? Has anyone ever tried it? Would it be.. illegal? (UFO related)

Let's say, hypothetically, someone wanted to create their own UFO. Not a spaceship with aliens inside, but a UFO in the since that it's an object that unidentified and it's flying.

They would construct it by getting about... 300 helium filled balloons taping them together in a circle so to create the common shape of a flying saucer. Next, they get a couple of rolls of foil and cover the balloons with a very thin layer using the foil. Taping it all together with clear tape. So end product is a giant 15 foot radius, maybe 3 foot tall(measuring from the center), silver disc. And maybe as extras, if it won't weigh down too much, they add in a few tiny lights, powered by a couple of double A batteries.

They release it just before dawn. It makes it into the sky and then the sun hits it making it look really shiny. People see it, have no idea what it is, then phone it in. To the point where video footage of it appears on the 6 o'Clock news. :lol

Would it be possible? Has anyone ever tried it?(like on that jackass show?) Would it be illegal?

It's called a hoax. There's been a lot of hoaxes in the past.

Yeah. I know. I've watched a lot of UFO shows on SciFi and TLC. Usually the cases of hoaxes have all been just doctored photographs. I've never heard of a case where someone actually tried to put something in the sky.

Yeah you would break airspace rules most likely.

But who gives a shit, you would at least change one persons life forever if you did it convincingly enough.

Reminds me of the time my science teacher told the class about how a girl had put 40 or so helium balloons on a yard chair and it floated away...... With her younger brother on it. :lol

I saw the program about the Biritsh hoaxers; it was a while back, but bloody good viewing. They showed the whole process from on board with the team, so you got to know the personalities behind it, and feel the bonhomie and warmth of heart when they snatch success from the jaws of defeat.

I think there were two main guys behind it, planning the whole thing almost like a military operation. There was drama about making the (single) balloon used, as well as how to motorise it and make it controllable, whilst making it simple and light enough to fly. Eventually it all came together and they tested it in secret, then planned where when and how they were going to use it. They picked a rural region renowned for crop-circles and speculative UFOlogists, then launched the thing late one summer afternoon so that, taking into account wind direction and speed, and the maneuvrability of the contraption (controlled by a team of 4 or 5 expert radio-control pilots strung out along the route within signal-shot of one another), the UFO came sailing across a field as daylight began to fade, lights blipping gently, and floated cheekily over a village where UFOlogists were enjoying an early evening pint in the local.

It was a great documentary, it nearly went so wrong at so many points right up until the very end when the spent device was recovered, and yet they pulled it off flawlessly and even got a few bits of good luck (something like a very impressive yet totally unplanned rotational motion as it crossed the village).

So yeah, it's been done! :) And likesay, it got into the papers the next day as a verified fact (although this bit I do not remember personally ... )
