It can't *just* be a controller..

I'm talking about the Revolution. There's no way Nintendo's Revolution is only the controller. Nintendo must be hiding something in unit itself.. or they're just plain stupid.

Here's my reasoning for this:

If it's only the controller that's the "Revolution", then Microsoft and Sony can easily rip it off and pretty much render the Revolution useless since it won't be anywhere near as powerful.

Secondly, if the controller is the "revolution", why is this at the cost of hardware power? I would assume that the Revolution would allow for at least 4 players and there's no way they'll sell a controller at $70 or more.

My guess is that it's not only gyro or reconfigurable controls or whatever we can think of but also, they're up to something with their wifi and concerns on power consumption plus size. I'm thinking that the Rev is meant to be a portable device that can be brought anywhere easily and can also run off batteries.

How can they do this? I'm not sure but I'm thinking that there's either some form of LCD that comes with it, or that the DS is capable of receiving video feed from the revolution or the Rev can hook up to portable LCD devices which would explain the monitor support.

The Revolution will have a Sex Port, possibly two for multiplayer action. Count on it.

Please tell me you didn't just make a snide comment about Prime. I thank you and I need to step outside to the OT forum before blood gets all over the nice shiny gaming one...

Nintendo says they're going to change the way games are played...We'll have to wait and see how they plan on starting this "Revolution".

There have been some comments over the last week by Nintendo reps saying that a controller is not the only way to improve an interface.

They also commented on possibly changing the graphics of old Nintendo games...

I think there will be some controller differences (Nintendo invested in Gyration, Inc a few years back), but we'll also see the stereoscopic 3d which has been rumored in the past.

I mean, we know that very cheap stereoscopic 3d will be used for movies in 2007.

We know that a video game company has beaten the movie studios to incorporating stereoscopic 3d. (I think it was Paramount which made this comment)

We also know that Nintendo has invested in DepthQ.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but stereoscoptic 3D is the ability to display 3D looking images on a regular television right?

Also, who is DepthQ? Are they a S3D related company?

No need for personal attacks. I simply view your opinions in a different light. :P

U2k the greatest, or whatever, went on claiming that Superman 64 was better than X-Wing and that Tao Feng is the greatest fighter ever made along with Street Fighter the movie. So, rather than attack, I've simply revised my opinion of HIS opinions and look down upon him. Think of it like that (not that any of this matters to anyone). :D

:lol No attacking, it's cool.

I just really find it hard to understand why people didn't like the game. I've been gaming for almost twenty years (18 actually) and Metroid Prime was the most phenomenal overall gaming experience I've ever had. Part of that can be attributed to the fact that Metroid is my favorite franchise, but it was so critically well-received, even if it wasn't the hugest retail success story, that I just have a hard time understanding why people can simply take it or leave it. People usually just say "I just didn't see what the big deal was." I know that every person has unique gaming tastes, but the game was (is?) #3 on gamerankings. That says something right there, IMO.

Picture every other time this has happened about some unreleased Nintendo bit of information over the past few years.

Now stop crying.

Does that really say anything? Stereoscopic 3d gaming has been available on PC for ages

Truthfully i probably didnt give the game enough of a chance, i played it for an hour or so and just couldnt click with the controls. The graphics, art, boses etc were A+ but i just didnt feel any incentive to keep playing. Its still on my shelf, so one day i will pick it up and play it and hopefully see what i couldnt before.

Do...do you believe in soulmates? I keed, I keed. Any manlove aside, my view on Prime is pretty similar. I've been gaming for about as long as you have and, to this day, if somebody asks me what my NUMBER ONE FAVORITE ALL-TIME GAME is, my answer's always an immediate 'Metroid Prime'. Never have I felt more immersed in a game. The game made the transistion to 3D about as perfect as a game could. It literally felt like they took the feeling I experienced in Super Metroid and converted it into a more interactive, 20 or so hour gamegasm. I wish I could encapsulate how I feel about the game into words, but I think I'd rather just fire the game up again and shake myself out of my jaded GAF-lerker funk. It is greatness in the form of a tiny Gamecube disc.

I agree 100%. Nintendo are retarded. They are just plain stupid. What is their problem?

OK they think there is more to the next gen of gaming then just hardware. GREAT, so they want to create a new kind of controler or gaming style, so where in the book does it say that if you want to create something new gameplay wise, that you have to skimp on graphics hardware? I doubt that the new controller or what ever they come up with is going to cost that much to make, unless the controller has a built in 25" screen.

Maybe if Nintendo wasn't as cheep as my 85 year old grandfather we could get something out of them that would actually make us happy.

And yes to be honest Mario sunshine, Luigis mansion were let downs. I am sick of Nintendo trying to appeal to us by cramming some crappy new shot in the dark game play querk. Just give me the simple, fun, addictive gameplay, developed to perfection, and we will be happy.

And on Metroid Prime, is was a good game, but it was not Metroid. It is just a first person action/shooter game. The only thing that makes is Metroid is that they put some Metroid music themes and dashed it with some old enemies and weapons. It has never been a FPS and it never will be. GREAT GAME, BUT NOT METROID.

God is Nintendo ever terrified of creating a game without using one of it's established game characters.

If they are going to create a game that is so unlike one of their classics (metroid prime) then just create a new univers and character. And if you want to make a real sequel, then do it the way it should be, and don't fix what ain't broke. I am not against sequels, but if the "sequel" is going to be SO unlike the first one then it is really not a sequel then is it, they are just taping on the name.

An hour? :lol
If you think the bosses, graphics, art are good after only an hour, I beg of you to get used to the controls and play on.

You should totally give it another shot. Don't think of it as an FPS. You do not need the controls of an FPS in this game. Just give it a shot... :)

The controller didn't come at the cost of hardware power. Theoretically, if reports hold true, super small size and cheaper selling price came at the cost of hardware power.

But more speculation without any infomation, so I'll leave it at that.

Awesome, I'm glad to see someone else with the same view. You chose the word "immersed"; immersion is the perfect word to describe my experience with it. If you get a chance, check out Mark MacD's EGM review (November 2002?). The way he describes his experience is exactly how I would. I go back and forth between Super Metroid and Metroid Prime as my all-time fav. Currently it's Prime.

:lol Can I use the word "gamegasm"?

I always get pissed off when people think just because the game's from an FPS-perspective that it should have your run-of-the-mill FPS controls. The game controls like you'd expect a chick (or guy, whatever) in a bulky robotic suit would. The game is all about immersion, down to the controls. There's a definite learning curve, but trust me, it's worth the adjustment.

Why are you pissed ? Its just some pissheads (mine) opinion ?

Halo did it perfectly with its heavy physics and slower free look movement, i guess thats why i had such a hard time converting. I also really need to hear my characters and enemies voices to get me totally immersed.

Okay, if the controller is wifi, it can't be something crazy, nor have lcd screens, because else batterys would die pretty fast, except Nintendo is holding some nuclear fusion power technology.
Oh, almost forgot, it need to be cheap, is not like you will buy a 100$ controller. :)
So definately something else is going on... remenber Yoichi Wada's words when FF:CC revolution was announced.. "Not a portable device, not a console system.. is the birth of a complete new platform..."

Maybe 'pissed' is too severe a word. I have nothing wrong with the usual console FPS controls, and I like Halo's controls and love the game as much as the next XBot, but I think Prime's controls suits it as well. I was put off by Prime's controls myself initially, and was shooting out a string of profanity during the first boss encounter and escape from the space station, but once I stuck with the game for awhile, I guess I just sort of "got it". Anyways, I'm just saying it's an incredible game that every gamer deserves to experience. I understand some won't be as enthusiastic about it as I am, but damn if I won't try to pass the feeling on.

That's fine. Some people hate it for no reason. But how does that equal "Nintendo's stupid"?

Although I agree, they are. Sometimes. Most of the time, actually, these days.

Coincidentally, I have Metroid Prime running in the background right now. I turned it on a couple of hours ago to browse through the galleries (looking for s/t for my site). I left it on 'cause I like the music coming in from the other room while I mess around on my PC.

It's not my favorite game of all time, but it is the best this generation, easily...so far, at least (Zelda's my favorite series, and I have high hopes for TP).

The thing is, the 2D Metroids never made you feel like you were controlling some lumbering behemoth of an armored suit. In those earlier games, Samus handled like your typical anime character in powered armor--fast, nimble, and acrobatic. Retro's interpretation of Samus seemed to be the stereotypical Western 'if somebody's in powered armor, it's gotta be big, bulky, and handle like a truck'. Some people may have found that 'realistic' or 'immersive', but the (intentionally?) awkward control scheme was a real turnoff for me.

Since this thread has turned into a reasonably interesting conversation about Prime, I figure this is as good a place as any to put this.

I too was greatly annoyed by the controls at first, add to that fact that I had been playing Halo for a while at that point and considered that game amazing. Well, this didn't help Prime's cause to say the least. However, I perservered, and continued to play through the game and began to quite enjoy it... until the Phazon Mines. I bought Metroid Prime the day it came out and still have not finished it because of that damn boring-ass area. I just simply can't muster up the will to continue. In the past couple of years, I have thrown the game back on a few times, and made my way a bit into the Phazon Mines but I can only play so much before I just feel like playing something else. The game just can't seem to keep my interest for some reason. It seemed really great up to that point too, I dunno if I'll ever be able to finish it...

I know we have every reason to believe Revolution will be less powerful than PS3 and Xbox 360, but if that's the case, I'm gonna be more than a little upset. I know at this point it's wishful thinking, but Nintendo has always been on par with the competition as far as graphics are concerned. This no HD thing is really starting to bug me too. I mean, in the US, television broadcast has a deadline of 2009 to turn completely digital. That means half way through Revolutions life cycle, a decent amount of Americans are going to have HDTV. Unless there games are true 3D and the controller caters to that, I just don't see how they can expect customers to continue to support them. I remember (don't know where I heard it) Iwata daying that Revolution would be the same price as the competition because they were going all out. I really hope this is still the case. Now the system is small and looks cool, but quite frankly, it's not worth the sacrifice. The only thing I really like about the Revolutions design is the disc drive. Does anyone actually care that the system is smaller than the others?

Fair enough. I didn't find it awkward, just different and eventually appropriate.
