Old?

When asked about the console's triple-core IBM PowerPC processor design, Itagaki called it a "buffed-up Sega Saturn," as the old console was also multi-processor, coming with two, 32-bit CPUs. He said that a single-CPU machine is easier for programming, but multi-core structures have become the recent trend.

"The Xbox 360 is said to be a machine that's easy to develop for, but that's because it has a good line-up of middleware and infrastructure. So it should be easy to create something that's up to a certain level [of quality]. But if you try to take advantage of the Xbox 360’s full hardware specs, you'll find out about the difficulty in programming for a multi-core machine," said Itagaki.
Uh oh.

"The Xbox 360 has enough power without all the cores going into use. Even if just a single core is used for a game, it will still be several more times powerful than machines up until now. But we aren’t satisfied at that kind of a level. Our programmers are having fun playing around with the machine. They're swinging around all the cores and making a game that shows the powers of the Xbox 360."

Itagaki said that the Xbox 360's 512MB of main memory is more than enough for games, but he feels that the machine's media might bring up some problems. He said he would have preferred if Microsoft adopted the high-capacity HD-DVD format, but said, given the next-gen disc format wars, he could live with Microsoft's decision.

"Another reason why [Microsoft] went with the 9GB DVD format (dual-layered DVDs can contain up to 9.4 GB) is that American and European developers tend to use real-time rendered cutscenes. But Japanese developers use a lot of pre-rendered cutscenes, so the DVD format brings a bit of an anxiety. The screen resolution for Xbox 360 games will be in high definition, so the pre-rendered movies are going to be pretty large. If we encoded the Dead Or Alive 4 trailer from E3 in high definition in a quality acceptable to us, it will easily be about 2GB. With DOA4, we'll be using the disc's capacity to its full extent. We started development on DOA4 pretty early, and we didn't know what disc format the Xbox 360 was going to adopt. So when we learned about it, we were really knocked out".

Itagaki also revealed that the DOA4 demo trailer shown during E3 was actually done with an alpha development kit for Xbox 360. He said that his team received Xbox 360 beta kits very recently, and that his staff is having fun with it.

The Team Ninja head also further confirmed that Microsoft is planning a major announcement in Japan this month. "We're currently thinking of whether we should create a new trailer for the upcoming Xbox 360 announcement in July, or if we should go straight ahead to work on the completion of the game," he said. "We'll play around with the beta kit for a little bit more and decide."

When Famitsu Xbox said to Itakagi that fans were afraid that Team Ninja could end up abandoning the Xbox 360 after the release of Sony's PlayStation 3, he commented, "Team Ninja will not disappoint their fans." Itagaki added, "To be honest, we're too busy on the development of DOA4 to think about anything else."

When asked for his opinion on the PlayStation 3, Itagaki commented that he respects the fact Sony is trying to "create a computer that comes from Japan." However, he also added that he hopes Sony will make a machine that actually runs according to its listed hardware specs. "A machine that doesn't run according to its promised CPU frequency is out of the question," he said.

i was about to post this

the pre-rendered movie comment is interesting. i hope this means the end of cgs though, i mean shouldn't next gen provide enough power to get rid of them?

I better not see a PSP game from Tecmo run in 222mhz.

sounds pretty cut and dry to me. EDIT: guess i'm not the only one. beaten to the punch.

also, i wonder if the doa4 gameplay trailer was in real time? it was perfectly smooth on alpha kits, so i'm still holding out hope that they'll have additional effects added with the huge increases in beta and final kits

Maybe it is just me but what I have seen of DOA4, it is just not that impressive.

Yeah, maybe now that they have pretty close to final hardware, things will shape up better.

I am just going by what I have seen to date.

Can I get this in English?

My guess is he's liking what he hears about PS3, but wants to stall a decision on development for as long as possible - expressing scepticism until final hardware appears, fulfilling the nice things he's hearing, is one way to do that. It'd probably be a pretty hard decision for him to make to even split his attentions with PS3 and X360 given his relationship with MS.

This in many ways is an echo of his other comments on PS3 about it being like a newborn baby that needs care and nurturing to grow up strong etc. It'll be interesting to see his reaction if it emerges as Sony has said it will, because it kind of sounds like he's expressing disbelief at a very tempting "forbidden fruit".

- Alpha kits
- It still looked/looks better than any other fighter out there
- I dont expect it to look much better than what we've seen of it so far come launch
- Wait for DOA5

Still, you're pretty dense...

Obviously he wasn't statisfied and wants to show the 'real' quality of the game, I'd say, with this supposed new trailer he might make. :)

I'd just wait and see. Judging a book by the first page of the workingdraft is kinda silly.

He won't develop for a machine that doesn't perform to it's promised(hyped!) specs. What's not to get?

...so why did he develop for the Xbox?

I think the word Itagaki is second to the word Nintendo at GAF for drawing attention! :lol

Can't wait to see the final version of DoA4! :D

"Another reason why [Microsoft] went with the 9GB DVD format (dual-layered DVDs can contain up to 9.4 GB)

It can, but isn't the proprietary security feature Microsoft's using going to reduce the total available space to 7GB?

DOA4 is going to be the best looking fighter, by far, when it's released.

I still can't believe people continue to doubt the likes of Team Ninja and Rare when it comes to the graphics department. Those 2 developers are just unable to make ugly games.

Anyone know of the (likely) date in July for Microsoft's announcement? It seems to be quite a major shot across the bow of Sony's ship and straight into the heartland.

Hats of to Microsoft.

2GB! Perhaps uncompressed but WMV-HD should do a VERY nice job in playing it back at a very nice clip. Kind of an odd take there...Perhaps this is his way to pressure MS to change their mind on HD-DVD?

could microsoft change the disc drive before the launch at this point and time?

i kind of doubt it.

anyway... here's hoping doa 4 looks better than it's alpha stage.

I think if the characters changed.... more detail... realistic hair... etc. etc. people would be excited for doa 4 on the graphical level.

No excuse for FMV this generation around IMHO.

It depends on the circumstances. FMV isn't without its place - there may be less need for it, but not entirely so. These machines aren't going to let you render anything you might want to in realtime.

I fucking resent the dense comment.

Well, early judgement happens quite often around here.

Don't get worked up by it.

I dunno, I may not have been seeing what I was seeing, but if what I was seeing was what I thought I was seeing, Sega's new Virtua Fighter demo beats the shit out of DoA4.

yeah and the tekken demo with jin's sweat beads OMG!!

oh, wait, they're tech demos...

cg rendered fmv is an artistic decision... there are still many things you can do in cg that arent really possible in an in game engine (though i certainly wish the last part of the doa4 trailer was a game). he must be drooling at bluray's storage capabilities...

MS is crazy to put in multiple cores. Normal developers simply won't be able to tap its true power.

Of course, we are leet and so will outperform everyone without even breaking a sweat. By the way, aren't I handsome?

All those meticulously rendered jizz-flicks will be The pure silken texture of my precious dolls' faces will be ruined, RUINED by nasty compressions.

And anyway, Allard-san has recently sent me a brand new hat. Not made of money anymore, no. Made of the skin from 1000 albino virgins. ooooh.

From Itagaki's words it seems the E3 version of Doa4 was just using a single core and now they have beta kits they're trying to to use multi core even if it isn't an easy task.
On a related note,Itagaki smells of betrayal :lol :lol :D Microsoft will have to increase money hats with him.

While I agree with that to some extent, I hope you're making that comment from having seen the Sega demo in person, and not making such leaps based on my blurry video.....

BR/HD DVD isn't a "super massive storage medium". It's a "high definition storage medium". The PS3 has the right storage medium. The Revolution has the right storage medium. The Xbox360 has an inferior storage medium.

Of course, I still think I'd get an Xbox360 over a PS3, at this point.

When Famitsu Xbox said to Itakagi that fans were afraid that Team Ninja could end up abandoning the Xbox 360 after the release of Sony's PlayStation 3, he commented, "Team Ninja will not disappoint their fans." "Itagaki's thing" is apparently that he'll dump his fans in a heartbeat if he's shown more powerful hardware. Even if it's just an illusion. If the fans don't follow him, and agree with him unquestioningly, then they weren't his real fans.

If that's not the case, and Itagaki isn't drooling over the PS3, then what does that mean? Moneyhats? Or does he just mistrust Sony, since he fell for the Sony hype-machine the last time around?

Can you explain how's that Revolution has the right media and the xbox360 not?

I'm factoring in the Rev's lack of HD.

DVD holds about 2 hours of non-HD video. Blu-ray holds about 2 hours of HD video.

Non-HD might suck, but the Rev holds a lot, the PS3 holds a lot, and the Xbox360 holds a little.

Since the Xbox360 is moving to HD, without moving to an HD storage medium, they're going to have to deal with having less space for FMV and textures than a PS3, Revolution, or even an Xbox game.

DVD can hold 2 hours of HD video too (with a proper modern codec and bitrate), so your whole argument is trash.
