Only two more months until my birthday. :)

But besides that, October, if you didn't already know, is receiving much notoriety for its widely speculated "October Surprise" which is suggested to be an event that tips the scale in Bush's favor. The most talked-about event, which also happens to be the most extreme scenario, is the capture of Osama bin Laden. This would be a bitter-sweet victory for the Bush Administration: on one hand, they caught the most wanted man in the world (at least he USED to be :)); and on the otherhand, they will more than likely have to deal with the legitimate accusations of staging this stunt on the heels of the 2004 Presidential Election to gain support.

You can most definitely count on the terror alert making a comeback (we might even see some red this time around :)) and stepped-up scare-tactics.

We see that Fox News is doing their part (both yesterday AND today).

Keep your eyes open.

EDIT: Oh yeah...I forgot about the possibility of another terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

Yeah, but I was talking about the original post.

Well if they capture bin Laden, then the threat should diminish. Meaning we won't such "strong national security." Bush's job will be done, and we can move on.

Catching Osama isn't gonna stop terrorist attacks though. He really is meaningless...just a symbol really

But it will be a very powerful symbol, whether or not he still has influence on terrorism.

1. His capture can allow the alleged criminal to be put on trial.
2. Bush will be able to brag about being a successful fighter against terrorism because his government caught the alleged head of a terrorist network.

you normally wait for the trial to be finished first... you know this is standard

Not when the fucker is on video bragging about doing it and expressing his pleasure in that what he did killed more people than they were expecting.

They need to pay-per-view his execution. It'd wipe out the national debt.

Do you have a link to him openly admitting it? I don't pay attention to his videos.

Also, any lawyers/journalists around who know the correct usage of words in the case of "confessions" given? Another word I could have chosen may be "accused".

It's the "Smoking Gun" tape. CNN has a video and transcript of it:

http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/12/13/transcript/binladentape.pdf

It's Tape 3 at this link:
http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/trade.center/interactive/bin.laden.tapes/frameset.exclude.html

The Bush administration releases the "smoking gun" tape on December 13, which shows Osama bin Laden bragging about the deadly attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Officials say bin Laden had advance knowledge about the planning and details of the September 11 attacks.

Officials carefully handled the release of this 40-minute tape because of its "compelling" and "graphic" nature. On the tape, bin Laden indicates he knew for several days that September 11 would be the date of the attacks. He also said that he had turned on his radio in advance to listen to coverage of the attacks and that he had underestimated the damage that would be inflicted on the World Trade Center.

Bin Laden claims the hijackers trained to fly the planes didn't know some of their colleagues on board. Some only found out what they would be doing as they boarded. He also jokes that some of the 19 hijackers of the four jets did not know they were going to die, but thought they were to assist in a more routine hijacking.

Before its release, the White House had a non-government translator on hand to counter any speculation that the government doctored the Arabic-language tape.

The videotape was found in a private residence in Jalalabad, but was made in Kandahar, Afghanistan, with the date November 9 on it, according to officials.

From the quotations, it seems as though he had prior knowledge of the attacks, but not necessarily any hands-on action. In fact, the tape may not be sufficent evidence to convict him.

You can bet on it: Bush is going to make the terror alert look festive for Halloween:

A Cornell sociologist says he has found scientific evidence that, whenever the government issues a terrorism alert, President Bush's approval ratings go up, even on domestic issues, such as his handling of the economy.

Robb Willer, assistant director of the Sociology and Small Groups Laboratory at Cornell -- someone else runs Large Groups? -- tracked about 26 occasions since 2001, including the major Code Orange alerts by the Department of Homeland Security, when some agency -- the FBI, the State Department or someone else -- announced a potential threat to Americans.

He tracked those with 131 Gallup polls taken during that time up until May. Willer, a doctoral candidate in sociology, found that, on average, each warning prompted a 2.75 point increase in the president's approval rating the following week.

Willer said yesterday that his research "controlled" for various things such as the Afghan war, the beginning of the Iraq war and the capture of Saddam Hussein, though not for economic good news or other positive developments. His study says he conducted "several time-series analyses" and used "regression models" and stuff like that.

He said he was not able to determine how long the approval blip lasted. He also didn't look at whether there was a falloff in approval ratings when, for example, the alert level dropped from orange (high) back to yellow (elevated).

Several Loop Fans have e-mailed requests for a contest on when the next alert level will be. We suspect this is based on a hyper-cynical premise that such alerts are politically motivated. There will be no such contest.

Makes sense to me. :)

From Democratic Underground:

1) Zarqawi puts out a statement on a (real? CIA?) Web site, making himself the new Osama. Terra "experts" (read: Surrogates of the Goss Mighty Wurlitzer) repeat the following talking points:

a)This annoucement gives Zarqawi access to Al Qaeda infrastructure to attack America.

b)He's the "new face of Al Qaeda"

2) All day the whores trumpet an all out assualt on Zarqawi's hideouts in Fajulla.

3) Chimp says in his speech that he will bring terrorists to justice no matter where they are.

This is a coordinated, textbook PR bait and switch.

Chimp still might go to Iraq. He might also make some kind of "bold" domestic announcement. But Zarqawi gets caught or killed before October 29.

Well, there's also the "Osama in China" story from Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

Yeah, I heard about that a couple of days ago. I kinda shrugged it off, but ya still have to wonder...

bush's approval rating is now down to a paltry 44%.

rofl.

and 59% of americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction. bush certainly has the base riled up and enthused, but this monster will be fired sometime in november. (damn vote counting!!)

I guess the "October Surprise" is working in the Democrat's favor. :D

Al-Qaqaa Spokesman Says No Weapons Search

His remarks appeared to confirm the observations of an NBC reporter embedded with the army unit who said Tuesday that she saw no signs that the Americans searched for the powerful explosives during their 24 hours at the facility en route to Baghdad, 30 miles to the north.

The disappearance, which the International Atomic Energy Agency reported Monday to the U.N. Security Council, has raised questions about why the United States didn't do more to secure the facility and failed to allow full international inspections.

I was banned for posting in that Red Sox thread. :(

Well, anyway....

Apparently, this Osama tape isn't exactly working in Bush's favor (the recent polls are swaying in Kerry's favor). And I'm genuinely surprised that the terror alert status hasn't budged.

Here's the entire transcript of bin Laden's tape:

Bin Laden speech from Friday, October 29, aired on Al-Jazeera.

"You are Greedy and Proud"

My speech to you is about the best way for you to avoid any similar catastrophes, and the war, its underlying reasons and results. In connection with this, I want to say that security is an important foundation in every person's life, and that secure people do not ignore their own security.

If Bush claims that we hate freedom, then I would like for him to explain why we for example did not strike in Sweden. It's also known that those who hate freedom do not have such honorable souls, as those 19 martyrs, may God bless their souls. We have struggled against you because we are free people, who do not forget injustices. We want our nation to have its freedom once again. And just like you commit crimes against our security, we are also going to strike down against your security.

I am, however, puzzled about one thing. In spite of the fact that we have started the 4th year after 9/11, Bush is still continuing with his confusing tactics and his fog-banks (of obfuscation) toward you, and keeps the real reason away from you. Because of this, there is a realpossibility that what was done to you will be repeated.

I'm going to tell you the reasons for these events, and I'm going to politely account for you the times when we made the decision that you would have something major to think about. I would like to start by saying that God is my witness, and that at first we never had a thought about striking the Two Towers.

But when we had had enough, and with our own eyes saw the American-Israeli injustices and aggression towards our people in Palestine and Lebanon, the idea was born. The events that influenced me the most, and in the most direct way, was in 1982, with the subsequent events when the USA gave a green light to Israel to invade Lebanon with the help of the American 6th fleet.

During these difficult times, there were many thoughts which went around in my head. It was difficult to explain. However, these thoughts awoke in me an enormous motivation to refuse such injustice, and a desire to punish those who are so unfair.

When I stood and looked at the destroyed towers in Lebanon, the idea was born in my head: we must punish the unjust with the same tactic, by destroying the towers in the USA, so that they will get a taste of what we had to deal with, and to stop murdering our children and our women.

We had no difficulties in dealing with Bush and his administration, because of the similarity that exists between this administration and the regimes in our countries, the half of which is the military and the other half which is the sons of kings and presidents. We have a long history with these people.

However both types have a similar nature: and it is the great majority of them who are arrogant, proud and greedy and are known for taking money unjustly.

This similarity was striking with Bush the Elder when he visited in the area. At the same time, some of our people (the Saudis) were fascinated by the USA and were hoping that his visit to our countries might influence us; however Bush instead became influenced by these people and their regimes, and he started to envy them, as they sit there for many decades in their positions and are stealing their country's money with any kind of audits or control. After that, he took up the same method of repression and restricting freedoms which under the guise of the Patriot Act, under the cover of the War on Terror.

Bush the Elder liked the idea that his sons would take over power from the father. He has also not forgotten the tactics of his own skills at voter cheating, like in Florida, so he could use them in an emergency.

We are in agreement with the Highest Emir, Mohammed Atta, may God bless his soul, that all our operations would be executed within a 20-minute period, before Bush and his administration would snap into action.

It never occurred to us that the Commander in Chief for the American Army could let 50,000 of his own citizens meet the great danger in the two towers, at the time when they needed him the most. Instead, he was involved with the girl's story about the goat and how it rammed. That was more important for him than to pay attentin to the airplanes which rammed the skyscrapers.

It gave us a triple time-frame compared to what we had budgeted for ourselves to complete the mission. We thank God for that.

Funny, AND thought-provoking.
