You guys are deranged. One of the more entertaining characters in fiction over recent years. Tom Cruise Missile + Reacher = dis gon be good.

I would have watched the movie either way because I like Cruise but I thought it would bomb. Glad to see it getting good reviews.

It can still bomb at the box office :P

Is Tom Cruise the real Last Action Hero?

Saw this @ Paramount last night and yeah it's pretty fucking good. Cruise sold me on his character and I didn't think he'd be able to. The scenes look retarded out of context in a trailer but it's dam good when all put together in the movie. It's violent as fuck though, my mom was a little turned off by how violent it was and she normally has a good tolerance for that kind of thing. It is a really dark, bleak movie. But really well done.

I guess regardless of Cruise, you should never ever doubt Christopher McQuarrie. He always brings it.

So is the release of this delayed due to the Newtown thing? Given the opening, it makes sense. My mom said it was really tough to watch after watching all that Newtown coverage for the last few days.

This is exactly what I want the movie to be. Looking forward to seeing this on Saturday.

Will be checking out this movie tomorrow morning. Surprise there is no hype for it but it's nice to see Christopher McQuarrie back on the saddle again. I love The Way of the Gun.

Just got back from watching this and I feel disappointed. The screenplay was okay, but the script could of been better. And those expecting a Tom Cruise movie where he just phones it in, this is Grade A material right here. It was nice to see a couple characters from The Way of the Gun making a appearance and by god, Rosamund Pike's boobs is mesmerizing. (^_^)

I'll give you two good redeeming positive bits about this movie and is that the director, Christopher McQuarrie, knows how to direct a car chase scene. By god, probably one of the best in the business that I've seen. Better than Refn when he made Drive. And better yet, the gun play is whimsical. It's not John Woo type of action but very down to earth to say the least. Here's a scene from The Way of the Gun for reference.

Other than that, story was predictable and the character, Jack Reacher is ass. I believe they could of found a better actor to play the lead other than Cruise. But, it's worth watching this movie just because McQuarrie directed this and would love to see him making more movies again.

Felt the same way.

One of the awesome things about the car chase scene is it actually followed connecting streets. A lot of movies I see filmed in Pittsburgh you'll have them turn right and there in a totally different area of the city.

Really enjoyed it. Perfect popcorn mystery movie.

I was kinda shocked at how funny the whole thing was. Lots of humor in the movie even during some of the violent parts.

Just got back, thought it was pretty awful. Rosamund Pike is a terrible actress, the dialogue is beyond cheesy and delivered as stilted as any I've ever heard, and Herzog is completely wasted. Really liked The Way of the Gun, totally let down by this.

Pretty violent for a PG-13 too, I'll agree with that, though it cuts away before you really see anything. Great mid-film car chase.

I really enjoyed it. Very good action, good plot, it was funny, and overall well put together.

I'm going to buy the first book in the series and see how I like it.

Saw it. Pretty good overall, just one scene in the movie almost ruined it for me because of how unrealistic it was, but I guess that must have been in the books also, never read them. Action scenes and the car chases redeemed this movie.

Spoilers :
it was the losing the cops part, no chance in hell the civilian population would aid/assist a person with heli's and 50 cop cars on his ass, when they don't even know him.

It's dat Cruise swagger.

Just got back from this. Loved it. Surprisingly funny yet dark. Great movie. Cruise, you got me again. I'll be first in line for the sequel if you get around to it.

It ended up being different than I expected and I liked it a lot. Definitely more violent and funny than the trailers would leave you to believe. The plot structure and pacing ended up feeling very different from a normal 3-act movie and successfully captured the feel of a thriller novel. In some ways it felt like a briskly paced mini-series (or say an episode of Sherlock).

Solid performances from the peripheral cast, a number of whom I had never seen in anything before.
Robert Duval was great in the final segment of the movie (especially in the action sequence).
Rosamund Pike is gorgeous and I like her voice but the role didn't require much from her.

The dialog was fantastic. The scene in the bar,
and especially the slut jokes
, was hilarious.

I hope they end up making more of these. I could go for one once a year. Just good solid entertainment.

Just got back and have to say I was really impressed. Went in with no expectations and honestly Tom Cruize was great. Guy really picks his roles well and I've never seen him in a real bad movie.

Car chase scene was so goood. Just the sound of that engine and realistic driving of the old car. Werner and the whole cast was great. I found the plot decent enough.

Fun film, slightly bloated though.

Fight scenes were really well shot and edited, never confusing and the hits looked mostly real. Love how the sound effects of every hit wasn't over done and loud.

Saw this last night and had a great time. Some flat acting (mostly from Rosamund) but on the whole it was a great thriller. In terms of pacing and content it reminded me of something from the 1960s; in fact, with the car chase I felt like I was watching something in the vein of Bullit. Some nice noir touches, too.

The weird critical turn this movie has taken is bizarre, though. It went from an 83 or so on Metacritic to a 48? What happened? Why such a divide between "loved it" and "hated it"? A lot of reviews call it out for its cynicism and Reacher's unflinching classic-good-guy heroics, but I feel like those are sort of genre staples.

It was decent, I wish I didn't know this was done by the guy who directed Way of the Gun, which I am a really huge fan of, so I wouldn't have been a bit disappointed. I don't know what other people think of that movie or whatever, but yeah this was decent. Funny at times and has a really awesome car chase scene. I kind of thought the plot of this movie was a bit cheesy lol really the whole movie was cheesy to me at times.

I guess this means no sequel :(

I want a sequel.

Neither Tom Cruise nor Barbra Streisand could burst the holiday box-office bubble of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which rolled to its second consecutive weekend win with $36 million.

Peter Jackson's Middle-earth epic, the first of three planned installments and a prequel to the blockbuster "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, has now taken in nearly $150 million since opening in the U.S. on Dec. 14. With another $91 million from overseas this weekend, it has made more than $433 millon worldwide for Warner Bros.

Cruise's "Jack Reacher" opened at No. 2 with a decent $15.6 million, but it was clear early that Paramount's action film wasn't going to slow down Bilbo Baggins or match the success of last holiday season's "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol." That film made nearly $30 million in its wide debut, and went on to make nearly $700 million worldwide for Paramount.

The "Jack Reacher" audience was older (76 percent over 25) and 60 percent male. They gave the film, based on bestselling author Lee Child's novel "One Shot" and written for the screen and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, an "A-" CinemaScore.

Cruise's personal problems may have limited its appeal.

"I can't imagine his divorce from Katie Holmes and the custody battle hasn't hurt him some with women," BoxOffice.com vice president and chief analyst Phil Contrino told TheWrap prior to its release. "Actions fans will come out, but going beyond that demographic is going to be tough for him."

Though it's behind their opening pace, "Jack Reacher" could wind up playing more like Cruise's "Knight and Day," which opened to $20 million and went on to make $76 million for Fox in 2010, or "Valkyrie," which did $83 million in 2008 after opening to $21 million.

Streisand's PG-rated road comedy "Guilt Trip,' in which she stars with Seth Rogen, has struggled since opening Wednesday. It took in just $5.2 million over the weekend and has a $7.4 million total.

It couldn't keep pace with another comedy, "This is 40," from writer-director Judd Apatow. The R-rated sort-of sequel to Apatow's "Knocked Up," opened to $12 million and was No. 3 for Universal. Moviegoers, who broke down 57 percent female, gave it a "B-" CinemaScore.

"Guilt Trip" is Streisand's first film foray since "Little Fockers," which debuted around the same time of year in 2010 for Universal -- and her first starring role since 1996's "The Mirror Has Two Faces."

The "Guilt Trip" debut is disappointing. "Little Fockers," a sequel to "Meet the Fockers," opened to $30 million and went on to make $148 million. Distributor Paramount was hoping the PG13-rated "Guilt Trip," which was on about 2,300 screens, would do between $8 million and $10 million over the five days and then play steadily through the holidays.

It won't be helped by the opening on Christmas Day of another mature skewing comedy, Fox's "Parental Guidance," which stars Billy Crystal and Bette Midler.

Paramount's head of distribution Don Harris told TheWrap that he was happy with the "Jack Reacher" debut and still hopeful on "Guilt Trip."

"The over-riding reality is that it's pre-Christmas," Harris said. "What you're trying to do is establish your movie and then see how it plays over the holiday. We're happy with that number for "Jack Reacher" and the CinemaScore (an "A-") is encouraging, too."

He said he thought "Guilt Trip," which played an older (82 percent over 25) and 60 percent female audience that could still find its place in the crowded holiday market. "It will have to hang in, but once we get to Christmas we'll know more, and we think it will play through January.

"Rise of the Guardians," the final DreamWorks Animation movie that Paramount is distributing, is showing some staying power after a slow start. It finished fourth for the weekend in its fifth week, dropping just 15 percent from last week with $6 million. Its overall domestic gross is $80 million.

Also holding strongly was DreamWorks and Disney's Oscar front-runner "Lincoln," which was off just 18 percent from last week and finished fifth with $5.7 million. Its overall U.S. total is now $116 million after seven weeks.

Disney's 3D re-release of its 2001 animated hit "Monsters Inc." finished sixth with a $6.5 million opening. That's below two other 3D releases from Disney this year. "Beauty and the Beast" debuted to $17 million in July and went on to make $47 million. In September, a converted "Finding Nemo" took in $16 million in its first week and wound up at $41 million.

What are the chances of a sequel?

Edit:

Interview with McQuarrie talks about what he'd do with a sequel:

Which Lee Child Reacher novel would you want to tackle in a sequel?

I’m not quite sure what book yet – I’m sure I know what terrain that I want to go after. The first book, ‘The Killing Floor,’ is more rural; in fact, the reason we avoided it is because it felt a little too ‘Walking Tall,’ a little too small town. Some of the other books that involved big cities we knew that we couldn’t do because it truly isn’t quintessential Jack Reacher and it gave you no place to go [in sequels]. The reason why we settled on Pittsburgh was because it was a nice sort of middle-sized city.

What I’d like to do next is cut rural – go for one of those books that takes place in the badlands, out in the Dakotas, something like that, where the terrain reflects the character of the next movie. Because in truth, the next movie is not going to be such a complex mystery as ‘One Shot’ is – and more importantly, I don’t have to set up Jack Reacher. The next movie can begin with him right there on page one walking in; there’s going to be less dialogue, and it’s going to be a tougher, grittier, sparser movie. So I think the landscape should reflect that.

And then, if we’re lucky, we’ll get to go to a third movie, and then you blow it open, you go to a big city. You go to the one that takes place in New York and London, so that he’s always a fish out of water and he’s got a different thrust in each movie.

COME ON, LET'S GET ON THIS CRUISE MISSILE!

I knew something was up when most of the negative reviews on RT were talking about how it was "outdated." So, outdated, because it's not full of shaky cam and gratuitous spectacle?

The silly conspiracy plot aside, this was great fun. Good action, good car chase, and little bits of attention to detail in the gunplay caught my eye. That this is by the Way of the Gun guy doesn't surprise me.

That would explain why the fight scene with Jeb's goons and Sandy was so similar to the beginning of Way of the Gun. I didn't pick up on the connection.

I liked the action and car chase more in this than the last 3 Bourne films. It's nice for a change when you can actually see what's happening.

Hopefully a sequel happens, even a lower budget one would be ok.
