That comment about the disparity between Jane the Virgin's spectacularly high-energy portrayal of wrestling and the endless pit of boredom the actual wrestling program that aired opposite it (WWE Monday Night Raw) represents...Another well deserved A from AVClub and they've got all the wrestling matchups AND Floating Head Rogelio. http://www.avclub.com/tvclub/jane-virgin-chapter-twenty-218637
Episodes 9, 12, 14, and 20 are my favorites. You are in for a treat. This show is wonderful. I'm not caught up (only to episode 8) so I won't be reading too much of this thread, but I'm the kind of person who will give a show time to get better if I think it shows potential - a common affliction on the CW - and I don't even need to do that here. It was sparkling from the word go, starting with Gina Rodriguez and the overflowing charm and emotional intelligence that she brings to a series that absolutely would not work without a performer of her caliber at its center.
Flaws are mostly minor (I find the music annoying) and they pale in comparison with the things the show does right. Sure, it takes an absolutely ridiculous premise and plays it up in a cheeky, self-aware style that gives it a lot of energy and a fun tone even when things get serious, but what's most notable is that the underpinning here is the lovely, realistic relationship between Jane, her mother, and her grandmother. Their little family is unusual on several levels, for the fact that it portrays so many things that are common in America yet nearly completely absent in our media: multi-generation families living together, women competently inhabiting their lives without the necessary intervention of men, Hispanic women in America who are allowed to inhabit a role other than The Help, the fundamental tension of many Hispanic American families- in which some are living in the country illegally, and, most personally relevant to myself, a single parent household.
The fact that they built up Jane's grandmother as kind of a lovable and wise rock for the family for eight episodes before quietly revealing that she is also an illegal immigrant was brilliant and really helps to bring a humanist angle to her situation instead of portraying it upfront as a manipulative take on an "issue" of import. It is political, but subtly so, and also genuine. But as deftly as they handled that, the relationship between Jane and Xo is the most meaningful and important on the whole show for me. I can't tell you the number of times that this show's perceptiveness has made their conversations directly mirror that of so many I've had with my mother before. It actually made me realize how rare it is to see a real, sensitive portrayal of a familial situation that I've lived in for my entire life and which goes so unacknowledged in modern American fiction in spite of becoming, statistically, increasingly common.
So the show is witty and exciting and hasn't missed a beat yet, but the moments that ground it in between all of the heightened, soapy romantic baby drama are what really make it stand out. Easily in my top 5 shows on air right now, CW or otherwise, and I have every confidence that it will stay that way.

This show is wonderful.
And with People's Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and a freaking Peabody in tow, JtV continues to dominate the awards circuit with a Critics' Choice nomination for Best Comedy, Best Actress (who else?), and Best Supporting Actor (Jaime Camil, very well-deserved).
Emmys here we come!
Yay! gina is expected at this point but nice to see jaime camill get the nod as well. Bodes well for wider recognition next year
p.s. Chapter 21, AV Club review: A-
funny theory in the comments that Juicy J is Sin Rostro after a face change haha. I wonder if they'll get a new actress for the role...
Totally agreed on the bolded. In the past, when characters were in dangerous situations, you actually felt nervous because you had no idea what was going to happen.Didn't love the very end with Mateo being taken, but otherwise a really good episode and an incredible first season. So much heart. So funny. So entertaining. Can't wait for next season.
I have the feeling things are only going to get better for Michael in season 2.
You see, Michael has a lead on where Sin Rostro may be hiding because he has a tracker on Nadine, who recently returned from being on the lam to strike a deal with the police. And Sin Rostro has Jane’s baby. Rescuing a baby would go a long way to breaking that “safe, familiar” image of Michael that Jane has in her head, and it would get Michael on Rafael’s level, which has been automatically elevated after the birth of his child. Jane, Rafael, and Mateo are connected for all time now, and the strength of that bond is what Michael has to fight against to win back Jane’s heart. And if it’s as strong as the bond Jane shares with her mother and grandmother, Michael is in for a very hard fight...
Who will play Sin Rostro next season? I like the idea that Sin Rostro sticks around for the entire series, played by a different actress each season as the character gets plastic surgery to change her appearance.
Hmm, that might make #MissingMateo a more substantive story development than I first thought.
I totally forgot about the Nadine thing, so It might also mean that his abduction isn't tortuously stretched out.
I'm on episode 11, Rogelio and Xo are the best part about the show.
DAMMNNN just saw Petra get her throat slit. That was shocking! What if that plan hadn't worked? That would be awkward.
Sweet, I can finally catch up.
Does that mean they'll stream new episodes week to week or that they'll have the whole of season 2 online to stream once it's finished? If its the latter does Hulu still get to stream new episodes week to week?
Excellent news.
So 100 % rotten tomatoes is good? It would make more sense if 0 % rotten was best.
The Merrell Twins will be back next season and uploaded a pretty cool backstage video: https://youtu.be/yolV6_-fIXM

Yay! I can get more people to watch it!
Transparent, I think.Has any other show ever reached 100%?
So when does OT 2 go up? And who is making it?
ivysaur12 did a great job with this OT and title (lured me in for one) but whoever does OT 2 needs to feature all of the cast too. Best ensemble on TV imo, Rogelio deserves all the love.
traditionally new OT goes up a week before the first episode of the season airs. Nobody has claimed it yet...

I'll post the thread two days before the season begins.
I don't want the thread to fester too long before we actually have anything to discuss.
Let me know if there are any objections.
