Where does everyone get their music from? I've been discovering a bunch of J-rock bands that I really dig on youtube but I have no idea where to get more of their music for cheap. I'm trying to find more of フレデリック, KANA-BOON, and ゲスの極み乙女。but not really sure where to start...

Usually Japanese iTunes for me. Sometimes you can find them on other countries' iTunes too.

Amazon Japan and CDJapan, basically, but that's assuming you want to opt for physical formats. Also for older, rare, or OOP stuff I've been using Buyee (proxy bidding site for Yahoo Auctions Japan). I dunno about finding stuff "for cheap" though. Naturally imports are more expensive, so digital is your best bet. As ElectricKaibutsu mentioned, iTunes but also Amazon's digital services are great. By the way, I didn't realize before how painless it was (as an American) to use Amazon Japan.

Physical : HMV/cdjapan/Amazon Japan
Digital : iTunes/Amazon MP3
You won't find a lot of Japanese music on iTunes outside of the Japanese store though, I don't know why labels don't put their stuff on other stores automatically...

What I always do is : search on my country's iTunes/Amazon MP3 store if the thing I want is available before going on the Japanese iTunes. It's cheaper to pay in euros than having to buy a Japanese iTunes card online...

I think today is one of the best days ever.
KANA-BOON made their major debut exactly one year ago so they did a live talk thingy on Ustream today. They announced a lot of things.
First is the release day for their new single, which will be out on November 26th.
On the very same day they'll also release their first live DVD!
They also revealed their new artist picture.
JnuXiSO.jpg
The biggest news of the stream is that they'll perform at the prestigious Budokan on March 31st. I thought I was going to cry when they announced that, I'm so fucking happy for them.
They are the best band of their generation imo, they are my favorite band in the world right now. I'd kill to go see that concert... ;_;

Aaaaand, my gf gave me my belated birthday present today...
KANA-BOON badges and a KANA-BOON shirt!
What a great time to be alive.

Awesome, thanks for the replies! Looking forward to diving into more music once I get home :) I've had ないものねだり on repeat for the past two days and even got my brother stuck on it, it's soooo gooood and catchy.

Their first EP (when they were with an indie label) is available on overseas iTunes stores.
Their major releases (so basically everything else they releases) aren't though.

Glad you like KANA-BOON, they're getting bigger and bigger in Japan, they need more fans in the West, too!

Really disappointed Pony Canyon USA starts and its not music as well as anime. Really wish Japanese music labels would wake the fuck up.

There isn't much to gain from actually operating a branch of the music label--Tofu Records crashed and burned. They just need to make the music available digitally.

I guess. I'm still amazed Sonys Music Unlimited does not have any of their own Japanese music on there.

I guess talking directly to US music channels is what I'd want from Japanese labels setting up a local HQ. Frankly...any music streaming service who had a good catalog of such content would get my dollars. Its my whole reason for not using those services. Why pay a sub when I'm still having to import bloody discs for any Japanese music I want.

KANA-BOON's new song シルエット aired on the radio today
http://youtu.be/arztocz3uqA
Shit quality obviously but I'm loving it! Already have the single and the DVD preordered.

Quick thoughts on some stuff I recently listened to :
Arukara - CAO (アルカラ - CAO)
A band that never disappoints its fans. Their music is always wacky and crazy but I'd say they manage to have some sort of melancholical (?) feel in their longer songs. A must-listen!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFeb2LLMp4A

Akai Ko-En - Mouretsu Rythmic (赤い公園 - 猛烈リトミック)
A great surprise. I'm not their biggest fan but still bought this album since it was on Amazon MP3, it was a good decision. Really loving everything in this new album, their quality of their previous songs was more variable. I guess this new album is more pop-oriented than the previous one, might be why I love it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQpMiooyBWM

Ubiquitous - Kiseki ni Fureru Futatsu no Yakusoku (ユビキタス - 奇跡に触れる2つの約束)
Second major mini-album from this great trio who debuted this year. Pop-rock at its finest, everything I'm looking for in this genre. There's definitely a gap in quality compared to their first mini-album which was still damn good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHkHxKRpQ-c

QOOLAND - Machi to Dai Toshi (QOOLAND - 街と大都市)
They're a relatively popular band in the Japanese indie scene. Their sound is a mix of pop-rock and math-rock I guess. Hearing screams in a song that started off as a more upbeat tune is so cool. One of the best bands in recent years.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP_zxlwUABc

SiM - i AGAINST i
One of the few screamo/hardcore bands I like. Pretty much a flawless mini-album. Fallen Idols is such a perfect song... If you're a fan of the genre you can't go wrong with SiM.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Olownk53m74

uchuu, - HAPPY
A young and promising rock band. Don't be afraid of engrish, it's everywhere but it doesn't matter with this band.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFbrXoY9w6I

Quruli - THE PIER (くるり - THE PIER)
Quruli, this legendary Japanese band, still got it. Two years after their previous album, they come back with some new ideas, new sounds while still keeping the elements we love about Quruli. One of their best albums.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSDx4htNfjs

indigo la End - Hitomi ni Utsuranai (indigo la End - 瞳に映らない)
Their first major single. The majority of the single is songs under the 4 minutes mark and that's where indigo la End shines. That said, the last song which is 6:50 minutes long is beautiful.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=99DIdczzy2Y

Frederic - oddloop (フレデリック - oddloop)
I love these guys. I love them so fucking much. My most anticipated (mini)album of the month and I can say that it's fantastic. I can't say a bad thing about them, A-Sketch got another gem in their hands. Hope they'll have the carreer they deserve. A truly unique and fantastic band.

I literally just found out that SHISHAMO is going to release a new single tomorrow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgYgruGKuUA
Also the bassist announced that she would leave the band recently.
EDIT : didn't watch the PV when I posted that, so yeah, it's the new bassist in this video.

Tomorrow is a good day, new tofubeats, Galileo Galilei and SAKANAMON! (Thanks to the power of timezones I can buy them in a couple of hours on iTunes!)

CreepHyp announced a new album today, it'll be out on December 3.

Gesu no Kiwami Otome will provide the theme song for the drama Subete ga F ni naru.

My headphones just came back from RMA so I can finally catch up with all the stuff I missed over the last two weeks (◍•ᴗ•◍)

New Shiina Ringo single is really good.

Oh yeah I'm really liking it. Better than her new album, too, I think. Haven't listened to either enough yet.

Galileo Galilei's newest mini-album is wonderful. It's similar to their early works. More pop-rock oriented, less electro/dreamy tunes with synths everywhere. I love both styles mind you. It's really good, Galileo Galilei never disappoints and they deliver a new gem.

SAKANAMON's new mini-album (it was only 1000 yen, yaaaay) is also awesome. Very short, 6 songs, 16 minutes long, perfect to shake your butt. It's on par with their full album released earlier this year, fresh, poppy... One of the best bands of Victor Entertainment, and one of the best rock bands from the new generation.

new Negoto and How to count one to ten videos. The former's single just came out a week ago and the latter's new mini album is out a week from today.

Negoto - Tasogare no Rhapsody

quite a surprise. This isn't exactly a new style for Negoto but here it's executed a lot like Gesu no Kiwami Otome. Great tune.

How to count one to ten - parade

super chill, pretty much everything I want out of math/post-rock. I usually don't take a whole lot out of videos but this one is a charmer and I couldn't stop smirking. Pre-ordered.

PENS+' new EP came out recently but it seems to be available from the band only. They put snippets of the tracks on their SoundCloud. This is somehow even more technical than the mini album. A split LP between them and malegoat would seriously make me happy.

https://soundcloud.com/pens-band-jp

been trying to study up big on Japanese post-hardcore. PLAY DEAD SEASON play some of the most legitimate post-hardcore in ANY region of the world and they stay true to its roots the same way Cowpers did. Here's a snippet/trailer, features probably my favorite song on the album, entitled JUNKHEAD.

Very interested to see which direction it will take.

Same here. Her latest single is so good, I think I might like the b-side more than the a-side. I kind of want a full Pink Tokarev album but their lives are good enough I suppose. I don't mind whatever she does.

Bought tofubeats's new album today.
It's pretty great, lots of good featurings (I especially like the one with Noko from Shinsei Kamattechan). The "solo" songs always sound less accessible, with a lot of different sounds right in your face (don't know how to explain) but are still great. Dope album.

Also got the latest Rockin'on Japan issue.

New Yoru no Honki Dance PV, I fucking love it, so hyped for their new album
http://youtu.be/5S9657-zJYs

LEGO BIG MORL released a teaser for their new album. It sounds fantastic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGpxM0chNbg
Already preordered it on iTunes, so I can listen to the songs from the singles, as well as a new song called Rise and Set which is amazing.

The new Lillies and Reimains album is announced for next month and I am bloody looking forward to it. Its called Romanticism. Its being produced by Fuji Maki of previously Soft Ballet and now in a group called minus(-). The Bass drummer left the group so now its all Kent and Kazuya who are making their music. Expect a little more industrial sounding Post-Punk Music. Thier Newest EP ''Lost'' Which came out earlier this year was already more industrial since the Drummer left the band and had to resort to a more digital input for their rythem drums. Kent also played the drums in some of the tracks so a lot of heavy post-processing went to produce that EP. Good on them for getting a legendary musician to do their engineer and production for them, so Kent and Kazuya can focus on their music.

Incidentely there is a good interview (more like a brief chat actually) with Kent (Lillies and Remains frontman and the pillar of the band) which is done by Hotline Tokyo.

http://hotlinetokyo.com/2014/05/interview-kent-of-lillies-and-remains/

Snippets:

Before Lost, you released a cover album that showed a wide range of influences. Why did you focus on covers?

Listening to a lot of music increases your amount of choices and self-confidence. By listening to a variety of music daily, regardless of genre, you accumulate options, which you can then use when putting out music yourself.

Why did you choose to cover Britney Spears’ “Toxic?”

The other songs we covered were 80’s, new wave type songs, so I wanted to have one mainstream song. I wanted to show that, regardless of genre, good music is good music. I think as a pop song ‘Toxic’ is very well made.

Just discovered the band 新世界リチウム (Shinsekai Lithium) and I'm wondering how the hell I've never heard of them before.
I loooove it. Their music reminds me of CreepHyp, and the singer of CreepHyp actually talked about them, that's how I discovered them. It's some damn good pop-rock, a bit mellow, they obviously try to do some emotional songs that can still be catchy.
There are two singers, one of them sounds like CreepHyp's frontman actually. The other vocalist sounds more like a guy you could find in a punk band. You'll actually get some heavier parts in their songs, with screams and all that jazz. I fucking love them.
They released an album last month, I bought it without any hesitation. So good.

The members are all huge fans of Naruto so it was a dream for them to perform an OP for the show. I'm so happy that this dream came true.

A couple of really promising newcomers released their first EPs recently.

Bentham - Public EP
Pop-rock band signed to Koga Records, KEYTALK's former label back when they were an indie band. It's quite good, I like the high-pitched voice of the vocalist, it's dynamic, there's no slow songs on the EP. Great debut, definitely looking foward to the evolution of the band.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7XgIM-dSk8

アザヤイタ - 人は愛を唄う (azayaita - Hito ha Ai wo Utau)
The members created the band last year and released their first mini-album today. I saw the PV this morning and immediately bought it :lol I really dig the voice of the singer, and I'm a sucker for this kind of "emotional rock" bands. It's not the most original band out there but I love their mini-album.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8dYYpSrShw

空創ワルツ - それより僕と踊りませんか?(Kuusou Waltz - Sore Yori Boku to Odorimasen ka?)
What struck me the most with them was also the vocalist's voice. You don't often hear a voice like this in J-Rock. Actually it reminded me of GOLIATH's vocalist. Their sound is close to what Lyu:Lyu (a band from the same label) can do.

New Hello Sleepwalkers PV

The Mirraz released a digest version for their upcoming album. One week left, I'm so hyped for it! I've been listening to The Mirraz A LOT this year, they became one of my favorite bands now.

Not really feeling it, it seems less accessible than the previous one.

What Sayuri is probably doing right now.

Her explanation for that is the biggest face palm. She would've been better off just not saying anything at all.

On more positive Nogi news, their newest single had the highest first day sales in their history. They've somehow became the second biggest group connect to AKB without have much connection to them at all aside from the early rivalry and the recent Ikomachan/Rena concurrent positions.

Yup, It really didn't help very much. This entire thing is a complete mess. Using a fake name, not knowing who each other were, not knowing the guy was married and had a kid, not knowing he just happens to be with young jump, being seen together on multiple occasions & laughing during her apology(which seemed more like nervous laughter imo when I was listening to it live) others have taken it differently though.

The 48/46 side of 2ch has been amusing though. Someone made a thread blaming Matsui Rena for all of this because she joined the group. Matsumura Kaori from SKE having to post on her G+ account because she was getting a bunch of hate mail from this over the same family name.

Yes, That was good news. I enjoy the new single. Hopefully this scandal doesn't end up being a big set back for them. Which would be unfortunate considering how far they have come till this point.

In other good news. [PV] Nishino Kana - Suki is up.

People now seem to be reporting that there won't be any punishment for Ringo. Management is standing by her work stress story. This is pretty surprising since many thought that at the very least she'd have to sit out promotions for the current single and possibly be left completely off the next single. They think it's unfair as to them it shows that as long as you're popular then management will try to avoid any punishment. Which doesn't really make sense considering that Milky had to sit out a single after her scandal.

Their second day sales are he second highest in their history (and only trailing that one by less than 1k). Their second day sales generally drop into the 10-20k range, while this one is at 33k. This is tracking to be their fist single to hit 500k in its first week. So it doesn't seem like too many people care.

They should kick her ass out of the group. I don't believe for a second that she didn't know who he was and that he was married.

Some think that management is trying to get these stories to stop popping up by basically ignoring the stories and not doing anything to the girls. Milky had a second scandal earlier this year and nothing at all happened to her, even though many thought that would be it for her in the group.

What happened with the 48 girl?

The Nogizaka46 girl? She was photographed kissing and hugging a married guy. Aside from the married aspect, idols aren't supposed to date. It's something that everyone knows goes on, but when they do date they're supposed to make sure that no one ever finds out about it. There were always rumors that Oshima Yuko (one of AKB's most popular girls) was dating, but no one could ever prove it, no matter how hard the paparazzi tried to find any links to it.

The Nogizaka46 girl says that was worrying about something while walking the streets, the guy called out to her and she went to dinner with him. She said that she didn't use her real name and that all they did was talk about her hobbies (anime and manga). So, no one really believes the explanation. But for as bad as it is, it still doesn't take the cake for bad explanations. That title is still held by Abe Natsumi (an ex-Morning Musume member) who spent two nights over at a drama directors house. Her explanation as to what she was doing? Playing Playstation. That's it.

Of course she lied, but who cares? It seems, thank god, these public punishments for being caught by a paparazzi jerk with your sweetheart are done with. Married dude is a giant asshole but that's for his wife to deal with.
