How does it function exactly?
I'm kinda interested in the game, but I'm not quite sure...
Ninja Gaiden was almost my GOTY last year, but I nearly skipped it due to the fact that I wasn't a huge fan of DMC. However, Ninja Gaiden, in turn, has prompted me to give DMC3 a chance...
My main issues with DMC were, if I can recall, the continue system and the mission design.
The continue system was terrible in that it did not encourage you to experiment with the game. Thanks to the fact that continues were an item you needed to purchase, I would never use them and end up restarting chapters upon dying. Not only that, those continues would not allow you to keep items that you had used. In Ninja Gaiden, when I first approached a challenging boss, I KNEW that I could easily reload my save and be able to start fighting again pretty quickly. As a result, I felt as if I was able to freely experiment with every fight and enjoy them to the fullest. With DMC, by the time I would reach a boss, I'd want to just beat him as quickly as possible in order to avoid losing progress. As a result, I'd end up playing it safe, which resulted in many tedious and frustrating battles. The continue system in DMC1 prevented me from really having the amount of fun that I could and should have had.
The mission system does not bother me nearly as much and wouldn't keep me away from DMC3, but I did not care for the arbitrary tasks that were often designated as entire chapters. It segmented the game and cheapened the experience. Gaiden was also broken up into Chapters, but each chapter was a massive chunk of gaming that felt like a complete, themed stage.
I guess I also disliked the camera quite a bit, as they always seemed to choose cinematic angles over useful ones. For a challenging action game based upon such a technical control scheme, that just doesn't cut it. For the record, I had very little trouble with Gaiden's camera. All I ask for is control!
So, how similar is DMC3 to the original? There were many things I loved about DMC1, but those complaints really brought the game down (the continue system especially).
