Japan's US$ 67 Billion dollar bet to become a giant chip maker once again

It's about time. It really puzzles me how in the world can America, Europe and others, let China control this market.
The politicians that run western countries are so bad... What a lack of vision they have.

They only care how much money they can make (for themselves) between elections.

No long term strategies most of the time.

Maybe young Japanese folk are really interested in chips, but I doubt it. Means you have to get in lots of foreigners, which is okay but Japan is becoming unliveable in some parts with crazy hot summers. Not to mention anywhere in Japan is one natural disaster away from being decimated and transient foreigners deciding they'd rather not have their house fall on top of them or get washed away in a mudslide.

Blame politicians all you want but the business themselves have final say. Ford shifting it's production to Mexico to me goes against everything they used to be as a company

But what else can they do? If the workers unionize and force their hand, it's move or shut down.

It's not like Americans have a strong desire to support local industry over the cheapest thing they can import. And the regulations on gas efficiency and whatnot hurting the classic American models. We did it to ourselves. Bit hopefully we can bring some of it back.

We need to invest heavily in chip manufacturing and it should be a national security concern that is front and center. Wars will be fought over chip dominance for obvious reasons.
For sure, big aircraft carrier battle groups are now as obsolete as wooden sailing ships were to an ironclad and a battleship was to a torpedo plane squadron. Vast fleets of autonomous drones are the future and its SUPER unsexy!

Because people don’t want to pay more for the same product. It was a death knell for Japanese electronics when the Koreans did it cheaper now it’s Chinas turn.

The entire population has their say, and they vote with their wallet every time.

Smart move, the pandemic exposed the extremely fragile global market of chip production and the overreliance on Taiwan to produce them.
