I think I liked this movie...but its very flawed, and felt unnecessary.

The action is top notch. Incredible, pulse pounding stuff right in line with the original 3 films.

The plot? Completely eye-rolling and ridiculous. I wont spoil the "twists" but I literally groaned out loud.

Id give it a 6/10? Maybe a 7?

Worth a watch.
Good to hear. Good action is really the only thing I care about when I go to see something in the theater

I'm watching this tomorrow. I absolutely love the first 3 bourne movies. Will drop some thoughts if I remember to. I'm not one of those people who is a hyper critic of errythang so if you're similar then please look forward to it /nintendo

Ill put it this way - Greengrass directs the shit out of a horrible script.

If you keep your expectations low, and check your brain, youll probably have a good time.

I feel like some of the harsher reviews are way too...well, harsh.

took my dad to see it tonight, we both really enjoyed it. definitely not on par with the original trilogy but still a damn fine way to spend 2 hours imo.

I saw Hardcore Henry in theaters. I think I'll have a good time here :p

Fuck reviews I'm still hyped to go see this. The Bourne trilogy is one of my favorite trilogy of movies besides the ocean's 11.

I personally thought it was fine, you can argue that it's been done before and just retreads the formula.... but it's still a fun movie :).

Just read a spoiler that's pissing me the fuck off. Ultimatum was the perfect ending, Blackbriar and Treadstone outed, Nicky okay, Pam okay, Bourne thought to be dead but actually alive.

Off topic but You've got to respect how Tom Cruise keeps elevating the Mission Impossible series with every film. That franchise doesn't get the credit it deserves.
The fact that that series goes through a new director for every film probably helps keeps things fresh.

I walked out. In 2016 the camera felt cheap and the drama felt super forced and totally lacking in atmosphere. The first movie was cold Euro thriller espionage, this one is meh. I made it half way. I'll watch on cable someday.

Pretty sure I knew what this spoiler is for a long time now just by putting 2n2 together from the trailers

He also wrote the script apparently.

He did, along with his editor, which isn't something you see often. Greengrass is much stronger as a director than a writer it seems.

If it's the spoiler I'm thinking of, it's very easy to guess from trailers and super obvious to see coming in the movie.

True.

The script feels like a bad first draft of Supremacy.

Funny enough Gilroys original script had Bourne and Marie arguing in the street and a driver hits and kills her. Bourne beats the living shit out the driver, gets thrown in Indian prison where half the film is set. He makes friends and enemies, breaks out of prison, and that's where he goes on this journey of atonement.

I will say kudos to Alicia Vikander, she plays a poorly written character who she's probably too young for very well. Acting overall was very solid, only Riz Ahmed seemed weak but that might've been intentional.

I'd heard about that. I read a later draft of Supremacy that was pretty close to what was shot but with some clunkier dialogue.

Only ever watched the first teaser the one time back during February. So if the thing was super obvious in later trailers, I don't know. Still fuck them anyway.

I was annoyed at the title of this movie but given how it's turned out, I'm actually glad they switched it up. As it stands I still believe people will think of it as the Bourne trilogy with this and Legacy as offshoots, which the first three movies absolute deserve, in my eyes it's one of the greatest trilogies of all time.

just finished watching it basically sums it up for me.

Meh story line and awesome action sequences.

Yeah saw this yesterday. It was OK, certainly not on a on par with the older movies.

Best way to describe it is 'going through the motions' Action scenes are fun.

The action and chasing are as great as ever....but the premise / story is just too topical compared to the other Bourne movies. Those movies still don't feel dated, but this one will in a couple years. At least it's better than Legacy.

Is the story actually bad, or is it a case of "I've seen this same story three times already"?

Both. The Bourne elements are more of the same, although I feel the ending is pretty regressive of the character, while the CIA stuff is just bad double crossing nonsense and a some vague Facebook surveillance stuff.

On its own terms, it's fine. I still really enjoyed it in the moment-to-moment. It moves with all the right rhythms, and never lets up. But after three films of similarly styled revelations, this one feels derivative - even retconnish. It's like they're intent on stretching what little is left over in order to make us care... but unlike the old films, it never feels necessary. Almost like the film is self-consciously trying to justify its own existence... caught between the serialized through-line of the originals, and the more episodic nature of the Bond franchise. And yet, while a "good, but not great" Bourne flick is a somewhat new beast, it's been the go-to for Bond for decades. After all, not everything can be on the level of Goldfinger and Casino Royale.

In other words, if you're already a fan (and hungry for another installment), there's enough here to satisfy. I definitely don't see it as a bastardization, or anything like that. Just don't expect as rich an experience as Ultimatum.

Saw it earlier, it was okay.

The movie seems aimless at times, and overall unnecessary, but kudos to the action and acting in general. It's basically a movie where Matt Damon walks around.

Alicia Vikander tried her best with an American accent, but it came off sounding like she had a knot on her throat and I thought this was really holding her back.

Tommy Lee Jones is his usual self.

Really a shame Matt Damon didn't have much dialogue. I think the idea was to try and have this stoic character throughout the movie, but it wasn't quite executed as well as conceptualized maybe.

Character/plot spoiler:

It really felt like the end of the line when Nicky got killed. Julia Stiles was basically the last tie (other than Damon himself) to the previous Bourne movies in terms of cast (sans Legacy). It truly felt like the turn of a new page now that Bourne is just solo.

In a way, Jason Bourne is as generic as its title suggests. The plot is nothing new for this franchise and the same goes for the action and direction. Luckily, the Bourne franchise has always excelled at those latter two attributes. Paul Greengrass's direction elevates the worst script for the Bourne films yet, which starts with an incredibly dull first hour and never manages to marry the personal stakes for Bourne to the more traditional Iron Hand plot. Thankfully, the second half of the movie kicks in when Bourne visits London and the setpieces from then on always are thrilling and shot and edited in Greengrass's and Christopher Rouse's winning visceral style.

The absence of John Powell is really felt as several action sequences are filmed and edited well, but lack the extra oomph his score added in previously installments.* Damon is great as always, Vikander is forgettable, and Jones isn't doing anything new but is still pretty enjoyable. It might not be as good as Greengrass's previous entries in the franchise thanks to a mediocre script, but Jason Bourne is still an entertaining summer blockbuster with impressive direction coupled with really spectacular action setpieces.

(*I understand that John Powell is credited but I believe the credit is the vein of Doug Liman's executive producer credit he has had since Supremacy, thanks to his direction of the first Bourne film. Thus, Powell is probably credited just because of the use of his old themes, as he is currently on a break to spend time with kids. Please come back to us before How to Train Your Dragon 3.)

Would've been a better film if they explored more of a morality view with Bourne struggling between being Bourne and David Webb.

This, and/or a focus on Bourne feeling like he has no purpose anymore.
His report in the movie kind of gets into this, where he was noted as reaching a tipping point where he may feel the need to return to work for them due to a lack of purpose, or something. It was disappointing that this was treated as basically a small note for the movie.

Just got out of this

Can't believe I'm saying his, but I think I enjoyed Legacy just a teensy wee more than this one

There is a sequence (won't say which, for those who haven't seen it yet) that plays out exactly as it did in Supremacy. Same outcome, as well. What in the hell.

And then the chase scene in the third act had a car being dragged sideways, too, same as Supremacy.

Did Greengrass and co. just rewatch that movie and decide to remake those scenes?

The difference between Supremacy and JB's final action sequences:

In Supremacy Bourne is being chased, and when given the chance doesn't shoot Kirill. In this movie, Bourne chases down the Asset - wrecking half of Vegas in the process - for the purposes of killing him.
JB's Bourne is a revenge machine in a way I didn't get from the other entries. Old Bourne wanted answers, not to drop bodies.

I really liked the movie, but I absolutely agree these elements should have been explored in greater detail and made more central. Maybe in the next one. Let's see Bourne caught up in something not involving his past.

The Athens sequence was rad. Las Vegas was also awesome. Damon was great. TLJ played himself. Vikander, super meh. And where was Pamela Landy?

SQL to corrupt the databases (on screen prompt)

Hacking 3 firewalls on a phone to delete files on a nearby CPU

Predictive algorithms (on screen prompt)

Thumb drive with "Encrypted" written on the side

This movie was full of fuckery. I hated it.

That's a good point, it was a reversal. I enjoyed the movie, but after the first act felt eerily similar to Supremacy, my expectations dropped and so the rest of the movie came out as decent.

I haven't seen the movie yet but I like your notion that "Old Bourne wanted answers, not to drop bodies". Bourne going all Nicholas Cage on us?

For sure. It was weird they brought that up and then kind of didn't explore it. Kinda hoping that it's a set up for the next one, something to eat away at Jason and explore.

Is a sequel a sure thing yet?

Only if this movie does well and Greengrass wants to do another.

Funny how it seems like Greengrass didn't want to come back for this in the beginning, John Powell didn't want to either. The fans were happy with Ultimatum being the end of the franchise.

But Matt Damon wanted it so....

What? Greengrass wrote the script, he wanted to do the movie. They both said they wouldn't come back without the other.

I didn't really see too much of a difference between this and the other Bourne movies. I'm no movie connoisseur, granted, but I mean the formula is basically the same. I don't know why the reviews for this are so much worse than Ultimatum/Supremacy.

Bourne is off the grid.
Stuff goes down.
Bourne gets dragged in.
Bourne owns everyone and wins.
Limps away.
Fast forward to Bourne being 1 step ahead of the enemies again.

I enjoyed it, thought it was great and loved him literally turning everything on it's side because he can. Was a bit disappointed when
he used that guy as a human meatshield, seemed to kinda go against what Bourne is as a person seeing as he is trying to be better than the government.

The shaky cam is excessive to the point I closed my eyes at points just to get a rest. I do not get motion sickness just got tired of looking at things shaking. It is a whole lot more of the same. It brings nothing new or interesting to the table. Time to reboot the franchise to the original settings of the book, kind of Man from Uncle period. The books are great but this series of movies is just beating a dead horse.
And for fuck sakes disconnect from the net when you reading the secret files, the hacking, encrypting, tracking is fucking nonsense

A huge step down from the first 3 films, but still enjoyable.

All the technology garbage was grating, though. I understand having to do something to make "hacking" cinematic, but this was "CSI"-level nonsense.
