What's sad is they just might if Jian conducts an international sensational perspective on himself by supplementing this problem with scandals leaked himself. Maybe if he makes a comment about "having enough pussy at home," and thus doesn't need to lure and beat women he's recently met, he'll gain the love of Torontonians. I wonder if Jimmy Kimmel will have him on for a night.

It was sarcasm, but I guess that doesn't travel very well via text. Regardless there's the issue of how many people are actually hearing about this instance versus the former mayor smoking crack and his overall poor choice of phrasing throughout. This isn't going to be a story that we hear about for long, I bet.

“With no warning, he just reached over and grabbed my genitals (through Hounslow’s jeans) and started fondling them. I was completely shocked and I reacted,” Hounslow said.

Hounslow, who is roughly the same height and build as Ghomeshi (“I am built like a cyclist and I am a cyclist”), said he grabbed Ghomeshi’s arm, pulled it behind his back and then pushed Ghomeshi hard against the elevator doors.

“I told him, ‘You are never to do that again,’” Hounslow recalls.

The next day, in the student federation office, Hounslow said, Ghomeshi accused him of being “macho, violent and homophobic.” Hounslow recalls Ghomeshi saying that he had just been “playing around.”

I was challenged by a friend to say something about the recent allegations against Jian Ghomeshi.
Jian is my friend. I have appeared twice on Q. But there is no grey area here. Three women have been beaten by Jian Ghomeshi.
I have sat with Jian over drinks and discussed our respective anxiety disorders. We have been photographed hugging on camera.
Just ten days ago, I helped him find musicians for his father's funeral. Three women have said that Jian beat them without their consent.
“We will never really know what happened.” Yes we do. Jian beat, at the very least, three women. Three women said so. “They were jilted exes.” Maybe so. They were beaten by Jian.
“They were freelance writers looking to get ahead.” Three women were beaten by Jian Ghomeshi.
At no point here will I ever give my friend Jian's version of the truth more creedence than the version of the truth offered up by three women. Anonymity does not mean these women do not exist.
“They were engaged in BDSM role-play.” This: this is something I need to talk about.
The beauty of BDSM relationships is that the power is always in the hands of the sub. BDSM and choke play is a subversion of male violence.
To hear that anybody has been abusing the BDSM power relationship for the purpose of engaging in non-consensual violence-against-women is horrifying.
That is not the point of BDSM. BDSM is in fact about the exact opposite thing. It is about repurposing acts of violence into creating a power dynamic of fucking EQUALITY.
As for the rest. I have seen my Facebook feed littered with comments about how “for years we've known Jian to be a shady character.”
I too have heard endless rumours that he's been a bad date, and have heard stories of shadiness and strange behaviour.
I have heard about his ridiculous pick-up lines and have (to my shame) tittered about them with my friends. But I have never heard, until today, that Jian Ghomeshi beats women.
I am skeptical of arts reporting. I am skeptical of Canadian journalism. I am sensitive toward shaming of people who are so-called sexual deviants.
But let's be clear. Whether the court decides that predatory men are punished or exonerated does not silence the voices of the victims. It does not make victims liars.
Whether our culture continues to celebrate the works of predatory men is another issue. It does not silence the voices of the victims.
Jian Ghomeshi is my friend, and Jian Ghomeshi beats women. How our friendship will continue remains to be seen.

I'm Canadian and never heard of him. I'm from Québec though, maybe he's not that well known here.

That said, I'm not glad I now know about him, because that whole thing is all levels of fucked up. Hope he rots in a jail for a long, long time.

I believe the investigations are in relation to assault as opposed to sexual assault/rape, but who knows.
 
For some reason the phrase "You're meeting the who's who of Canadian indie rock!" has stuck to my mind over the past few weeks. Picturing Ghomeshi saying it fills me with disgust for reasons I'm not sure I completely understand.

It's still a radio show, but it has a visual aspect available online on CBC's site, I think. But who really watches radio?

Yeah, that's essentially what the investigations are. 3 people have come forward to police so they're looking into those particular cases, anyway.

Looks like we'll see what he'll bring to his defense down the road, if he pleads not guilty I mean. Kind of interesting too, considering that he willingly provided stuff to the CBC brass at one point.

Also makes me wonder why he considered himself free of guilt or blame prior to these allegations being public. Hubris? Arrogance? He even had photos of this stuff...

And believe it or not, there's an equally good chance he'll walk away from these charges in court. The prosecutor has a pretty tough job to prove this case beyond the testimonials from the victims, and will likely lean most of their arguments towards coercion from Ghomeshi.

I mean, Canada (relatively) recently had a very prominent case go through the Supreme Court with regards to consent. It'll be very interesting to see how high this case goes in the courts...

I believe one of the videos Ghomeshi showed the CBC showed one of these victims receiving a bone breaking injury, or something similar. If the videos show something like that, he'll have a hard time fighting against that. His arrogance through all of this is pretty incredible.

But yeah, if the photos/videos indeed have something to that degree, the prosecutors job may be a lot easier.

And since he had his lawyers show the video to the CBC, it's going to be pretty hard for him to convincingly say he accidentally lost the footage.

CBC fired Q radio host Jian Ghomeshi after he showed them a video depicting bruising on a woman he had dated, apparently caused by a cracked rib, sources have told the Star.

That's the point I was getting to above, if the videos show evidence that he did physically harm them like the Star claims, he shouldn't be able to get out of this.

I imagine he never considered himself free of guilt. He knew what he did. He probably just arrogantly assumed that no one would publicly come forward.

Let's be honest here. When we do something wrong what would most likely be our first reaction when the truth begins to surface? I know I'd likely deny it. When we do something wrong there's this seemingly natural reaction to deny it.

I'm also Canadian and I enjoy Canadian music, but yeah... there's something very uncool about the phrase "Canadian indie rock". Combine that with the saying "who's who" and you have one of the dorkiest quote I've heard in awhile.

Seeing him surrounded by throngs of media makes me almost feel sorry for him. He looks so pathetic, and he has to live with his mother while on bail. I do feel terrible for his family. Dad dies and a month later your successful son's career, reputation, and future have gone down the toilet.

He got away with it for years and was a minor celebrity, so he had an air of arrogance and invincibility around him. When the CBC fired him he immediately sued and went public, thinking he was untouchable and that he could easily win the PR battle. Then people started coming forward and the stories started coming out.

Good riddance.
 
I listen to Radio 2 on a daily basis , the signal, under covers, tempo, great great programs, highly recommended.

I heard gomeshi's name a few times and yeah they did comment on the case and today he just surrenders.

I think cbc learned their lesson with the whole short bus movie where tv reporters had sex in a movie and cbc fired them. The girl won her case.

There was no case, CBC didn't fire Sook Yin Lee over her role in Shortbus. They threatened to, but there was a mass outcry against it and they didn't; she remains the host of DNTO (Does Radio 2 even play opera on Saturday afternoons anymore?).
