Gareth Evans is to produce The Raid's (English language) reimaginging.

Joe Carnahan (The Grey, A-Team movie, Smokin Aces) is to direct.

Frank Grillo to star.

Joe Carnahan tweets:

It's not a remake. It's a reimagining of the same scenario.
Everybody take a deep breath.
We won't disappoint you, rabid-fanboy-from-Hell.

Frank Grillo and I are going to sit down with @colliderfrosty this week, do an in-depth and then all your fears will be allayed #theraid.

You can't remake The Raid, guys. It's a fantastic film. So, ask yourselves why would we be doing it, unless we had something really special.

I've liked him since NARC. Smoking Aces was fantastic as well. He should be directing more movies.

This is also the guy slated for that Uncharted movie I believe.

Don't know what to think tbh, not 'til we learn more. Just...hope they don't come out with something terrible?

No need to remake, reimagine, or anything along those lines.

The Raid 1 & 2 are phenomenal and shouldn't be tampered with. Not to mention the U.S. release of The Raid isn't even 5 years old. Why does a movie need to be reimagined if it came out this decade? LOL!

I never have a problem with Hollywood remaking/reimagining/rebooting things I like. If it sucks then I still have the original. If its great then I have more of the stuff I like.

So yeah, I am in.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
But... didn't they both have a pretty wide release already in the States?

I remember seeing the first at my then-local cinema in the middle of nowhere. And I did a midnight showing of its sequel and it was a sold out show in a major city.

Ugh... The Raid 2 is in my Top Ten films of all time. People love saying it in the same breath as titles like John Wick, Fury Road, and Dredd... and while those are phenomenal films, I still place The Raid 2 a fair bit higher on the pedestal.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
This might not end up good. A lot of what made the Raid 1 and 2 so good was the directors keen eye for capturing action in creative ways.

If they can at least get the choreographers the fights could turn out decent.

I'll watch it as a huge fan of the series, but I can't understand why this exists right now. It's so soon.

If Evans is a legit producer and has say, I think it'll be good.

I remember reading a while back that this deal helped Evans fund The Raid 2 or something, not sure if it's true.

NOOOOOOPPPEEE.

I will only accept this "Raid" if they do what made the OG Raid so good; uncut takes of the action scenes and imaginative combat scenarios. Not Gun-Fu a la John Wick, but actual fighting with the occasional moment of gun fights.

I don't want what'll be a cinematic third-person shooter, I want some ridiculous John Woo-style action scenes combined with uncut and longer takes.

Yeah that raises the question of what the choreography will be like in the first place. Will they still be using the traditional Indonesian martial art or go for something more familiar? It depends on how much they care about preserving the aspects of the original I guess...

I like Carnahan and Grillo well enough, but if you can't at least MATCH the action, this shit is DOA. If they hack the fight scenes to pieces then this thing might go down in film history as a legendary blunder.

The stuff they're saying towards die hard fans seems to imply that they know the stakes which is better than nothing, but Grillo's going to have to Keanu the fuck out of his training to make this work.

Long story short, this:

Can Frank Grillo fight like Uko Iwais? If not, what's the point?

Weird.

The first Raid movie is not that old or particularly hard to follow, as it's a bland story used as an excuse for some awesome fight scenes and a whole lot of tension.

I cannot see them improving on the fights, and it doesn't need a better (or more of a) story because it's not that kind of movie.

I can't see what this film will offer that the director's so confident about that'll make it a worthy aside to the original. I'm down to eat my words but I'd be very surprised.

Dredd covered this for me personally. At least in regard to Raid 1. I vote for a Dredd 2 instead that builds upon the world and story of its predecessor like Raid 2.

Errrrrrr... Well, I like everybody involved so why not but this is such a strange project.
A reimagining of The Raid but without any of the incredibly talented stuntmen / martial artists in the leading roles. So basically, the only thing they are taking is the concept of "cops climb up a building".

It's easy money I guess and I'm sure the movie will turn out fine but the cynicism levels are quite off-putting.
