Wasn't Carnahan attached to something else recently?

Errrrrrr... Well, I like everybody involved so why not but this is such a strange project.
A reimagining of The Raid but without any of the incredibly talented stuntmen / martial artists in the leading roles. So basically, the only thing they are taking is the concept of "cops climb up a building".

It's easy money I guess and I'm sure the movie will turn out fine but the cynicism levels are quite off-putting.

Yeah part of the problem for me is that The Raid itself, without the action, is quite an empty premise. The story is more or less just there, and the character development is dealt with fists, and how much of them you could take, over much else. A 'reimagining' of something like The Raid 2 would be far more interesting; it's bigger and more expansive. Though who knows, maybe the bare-bones aspect of the first Raid can be used to their advantage.

Reimagining what? The premise has been done several times, it's nothing special, people stuck in a building.

The sauce of the Raid was all in execution.

But you know what? Whatever, people scared of subtitles wont change their minds, so go ahead.

I am always reminded of the District13 --> Brickhouse disaster, so i wont be lining up.

Hard to imagine the fight choreography and execution being half as good.

You could also probably follow Raid 1 pretty well even without subtitles.

It's not a remake. It's a reimagining of the same scenario.
Everybody take a deep breath.
We won't disappoint you, rabid-fanboy-from-Hell.
Frank Grillo and I are going to sit down with @colliderfrosty this week, do an in-depth and then all your fears will be allayed #theraid.
You can't remake The Raid, guys. It's a fantastic film. So, ask yourselves why would we be doing it, unless we had something really special.

I'm sure these guys read gaf, so...how about you make your own movie, if it has nothing to do with the raid, and not try to get association hype from it, if it has nothing to do with the raid... The scenario wasn't some mind blowing concept, it was the silat and the choreography..you can't just show up coining a new term for a remake. Remakes are often the same scenario done differently, slightly.

Lol, there is no way this film will end up being anything like the original. The stunt people working in America wouldn't do half the shit those Indonesians did for a wad of dimes.

I'm interested though. The Grey is actually pretty fantastic. I wonder what they have cooked up.

Drokk you, Dredd Script was complete and floating anout the web long before the Raid was complete, Dredd was first, it just took longer to shoot.

Because brand recognition.

I've never understood why American movie studios feel the need to remake almost every successful foreign movie.

Does the American audience hate subtitles that much?

Wasn't the oldboy reimagining a flop, despite having big names?

Yeah it was, but on the other hand you have successes like The Ring and The Departed. Not saying I support this, but it makes sense financially.

The answer is yes, sadly, and it's not just an American thing.

I like Carnahan and Grillo well enough, but if you can't at least MATCH the action, this shit is DOA. If they hack the fight scenes to pieces then this thing might go down in film history as a legendary blunder.

The stuff they're saying towards die hard fans seems to imply that they know the stakes which is better than nothing, but Grillo's going to have to Keanu the fuck out of his training to make this work.

Long story short, this:

I doubt it's gonna be a martial arts movie.

If this is the Raid's first 30 minutes, but for the whole movie, I'm totally okay with that. If they go with the tension filled part with snipers and being swarmed by people with guns while defending rooms and maneuvering through the building instead of the martial arts aspect, I could see it working. Because I really enjoyed gunfight parts in The Raid also and the way cops get picked off by snipers was like a horror movie.

It could turn out to be a very tense survival bottle film.

People acting like remake means slavish shot-by-shot duplication or something.

It's called "The Raid." It's set in a building. It's using the same general concept.

It's a fucking remake, Joe. Dawn of the Dead was a remake too.

Meanwhile, apparently the word "Reboot" now means "direct sequel" for half the "reboots" that have been announced.

Gareth Evans watching over this is something of a comfort, as he could have just as easily been done with the remake as soon as he sold the rights to help fund The Raid 2. He would probably like this to do well to help him fund more of his own films.

Conflicted. Unnecessary and will likely be meh as best case scenario, but Carnahan is an entertaining filmmaker and I really enjoy Frank Grillo.

The Raid 1 is a concept that can work without martial arts.

The Raid 2 is a concept that needs martial arts. That movie survives off it's crazy fight set pieces.

The film has a strong cult following, but let's not pretend that a US run that totaled just over $9 million is a wild success story.

I don't have high hopes for it, but will give them a chance.

Whatever, if it's garbage then we still have the original films, and lousy a remake won't take away from that.

If we do get "The Grey and Narc" Joe Carnahan then there's no reason it can't be great. For all the whinging and moaning over Hollywood having no imagination, everyone sure seems to lack any imagination when talented people are attached to remakes.
