You can't remake The Raid, guys. It's a fantastic film. So, ask yourselves why would we be doing it, unless we had something really special.

...but it doesn't exist yet, so why is it special?

Why can't they just have the balls to say "People don't like reading subtitles and would prefer a western cast"?

Your not wrong but you can enjoy your raid movie with out great martial arts and more of a tense survival film and I will like the original which I think has all of that is spades.

Well I can like both since I can always watch the original and the sequel for great martial arts.

But it's not like the remake will be anything like I want it to be. It could still be shit trying to match the martial arts action of the original. But I prefer to imagine how a remake could work rather than have a knee jerk negative reaction.

I have to imagine that whatever plot excuse is going to be used to stick a white American police officer in an apartment complex full of criminals trying to kill him is going to be insanely racist.

Others have said it first: there is already a Western version of The Raid, and it's called Dredd. Hell, Dredd skated over the optics of white law enforcement officers gunning down scores and scores of slum dwellers with its fictional setting. And it had Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey.

That's a good positive attitude but I don't have a lot of faith in Hollywood and I am a huge fan of the raid films so I am not a fair judge. In my perfect world they wouldn't call what ever this turns out to be the raid but I am not objective. I never saw the american old boy for the same reason.

Even though I really like it, I don't feel like The Raid is some holy, untouchable movie. The more dope action movies the better, just make that happen.

Frank knows jujitsu right?

waiting for trailer of this 'reimagining' before commenting further

edit : it just occurred to me, who will they cast as the mad dog? can anyone fight like that in holywood atm?

The sequel was an overly indulgent and bloated let down so if this series has to continue through sequels, remakes or whatever I'm fine with it as it isn't some sacred thing in my eyes. Plus I've liked some of Carnahan's prior work so I hope it works out.

I'd need to see a trailer or at least more information before I can say the remake will go either way.

I'm just saying that if you were to remake it with lesser fighting talent, then what could you expand on? If you strip The Raid 1 of martial arts, then you're still left with a cool and simple concept and action thriller of cops trapped and outnumbered in an apartment fighting for survival. You could theoretically make a successful reimagining of The Raid without as good martial arts.

The Raid 2, however, I think is impossible to remake. If you strip The Raid 2 of martial arts, you're kinda left with a generic mafia crime movie that is too long. It's not a terribly exciting concept in itself. The Raid 2 is not a movie that can survive without its martial arts set pieces.

Good luck on the choreography and cinematography ;)

What is there to be re-imagined, really? It is a pretty straightforward premise, with a bunch of agents trapped inside a building who realize they were dispatched to die, and have to punch, stab and kick their way out of it. The brilliance of the movie was in its limpid direction, the magnetism of its central character and the brutal, yet splendid choreography that rarely, if ever, graces western action flicks.

Theu should just not call it The Raid and if it's good then it will stand on it's own merits.

Isn't this being produced by the same guy who wrote and directed the original? Who is from Wales btw.
Just because he has a Producer credit doesn't mean he is all that involved in the film. It's just a way to get his name in the trailer and try to attract fans of the original.

The more I've thought about it, the more I don't dislike this idea. The originals will not be going anywhere, this will have no bearing on those for me at all. And, if this is successful it will shine a light on the originals and they will experience more exposure. I'm down for that.

Yeah, let's remake the worst theatrical release of 2012, but with its one positive weakened.

There's nothing to remake about the Raid.

Just do a good action movie instead of trying to capitalize on Evans/Uwais/Ruhian/stunts past work.

He literally sold away the remake rights to make another film, so him coming back to work on this doesn't really scream "cashing the check" right off the bat.

Normally I'd say this is a bad idea, but Carnahan + Grillo + Evans on board? Could be good. I imagine it will have less focus on martial arts and more on gunplay and there is an opportunity to improve the actual story. If they play in to that stuff, maybe it can be good as a different thing.

Exclusive: Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo Explain How Their ‘The Raid’ Will Differ from the Original

CARNAHAN: [It’s set in] Caracas. Because Caracas is a madhouse. It’s almost like a safehouse for bad guys, like they built this block in Caracas because this is where you come to do business and no one will fuck with you. Because it’s such a dangerous place, nobody wants to go in there. Again, it’s heightening elements of The Raid that were already there, I’m taking these story elements and kind of weaponizing them. Just giving them a shot of steroids, because again everything is about zagging—where The Raid zigged, we’ll zag.

I like their attitude but the description of their setting is literally the same as the building used in the original film. Which is good I suppose, but I'm not getting what's meant to be heightened up.

They can spin it all they want, but it's all talk at the moment. Of course the director of the original would support it since it's easy money for him, just like it was for the directors of REC and REC2 (they trashed the remake afterwards).

I'll still watch it since I'm a sucker for R-rated action movies, though.
