John Riccitiello: "Sony f***ing nailed it, and they deserve the victory"

It's fun to go back and watch this video from the "D: Dive Into Media" conference with (everybody's favorite) Yusuf Mehdi and Nancy Tellem from February 2013, long before the announcement of Xbox One. They made it painfully clear where they were headed:

http://www.wsj.com/video/yusuf-mehd...dia/82951C3B-5BB9-4A7B-AACE-F97993244DD0.html

Remember when Major Nelson was posting pics of him and his team, etc. watching the PS4 reveal / PS Meeting and eating popcorn?

Microsoft was not overly impressed with Sony's strategy.

Penello: "Sony Has Published Meaningless Numbers"

It's well deserved but the Xbox One is still a very capable piece of hardware that shouldn't be shit on. The Saturn and the Dreamcast had their mistakes but over time people generally still loved them for what they had and what they were.

Regardless, the platform of choice is pretty clear this time around.

Why would you sing about Volvos? They are nice cars, but really.

heh, no it was from a Swedish song on the children's channel(PBS) where they sang about each genders gender. How they are different but basically the same thing since boys pee through the penises and girls through their vaginas, how great they are. How they are a great gang and old people have them as well. Some idiots got freaked out, some laughed, some actually explained what was what, and some where glad since they had another thing they could leave to TV. Apparently the song is coming in English according to the writer of said song since, well...people who translated it so do suck at translating it.

Anyway, anyone mind explaining the water cooler thing to me? Is it a dumb pun about the Kinect? As the low latency thingamajig is basically just good to talk to? Or something that was just lost in translation?

Anyone think arrogant Sony might return for the next round?

I'm thinking the first thing they drop is the plus part of PS plus. No more games with the sub.

I'm rather impressed by the kind of revision (of history) and spin that is going on in this thread :O

I wonder who's Sony's friend in Kyoto

You know you messed up big when your competitor maintains the status quo and beats you.

Sometimes I enjoy musing on the state of the Xbox One if they didn't change a single thing (24-hour check-in's, DRM, game-sharing debacle, mandatory Kinect, etc).

In the end though, I hope Microsoft doesn't leave the gaming business. The truth is the competition from Sony is what kept them in check; so the reverse holds true if Sony decides to ever pull some funny business. That is, unless they both decide on consumer-unfriendly policies, then we're screwed. I don't feel Nintendo is a direct competitor to either of them with the Wii U.

It means that people spend the next day at work talking about what they experienced the night before (see TV series Lost for a typical 'watercooler' subject) this invariably happens in offices around the water cooler/dispenser or other social areas of work.

Xbone being the 'next watercooler' basically means everybody will be talking about what they watched/played/danced to the night before - yes, even those dirty casuals and your ultra Conservative boss.

You know you messed up big when your competitor maintains the status quo and beats you.

Sharing/Broadcasting/Streaming and Sony being in front etc. was not the status quo when this gen started, they put the work in and got rewarded.

Curse of the 3rd Gen. In the end it will push MS to have a much improved console and more exclusives. Lets hope Sony doesn't get complacent with this "victory."

Sony would lose money if they dropped the free games because that's one of the main draws of PS+

sony's nailing it when they announce that they saved silent hills, hired kojimasan and burned konami to the ground (and brought us wipeout back)! #4theplayers!

Isn't basically the whole reason MS got into the console business because they were afraid of Sony having a media box that dominated the living room and made their Windows platform less required? The XOne seems like a product they were always going to make imo. It was the DRM thing that did the most damage though.

I mean if you give me a games console, or you give me a console with all the same games with all this media stuff tied in, why would I not go for the latter?

No, most of the arrogant people from Sony's past have left like Kutaragi, Tretton, and Reeves. And coming from PS3 has humbled them IMO.

neither of the consoles are particularly capable in the grand scheme of things. its just a joke that the x1 was lower than the already low bar of the ps4

Before E3 2013

"Sony too, you'll see!!"

After E3 2013

"It was all MS mistakes, not impressed!!"

Sony made the better machine (and cheaper) while marketing above and beyond Ms and Nintendo combined. Anything who thinks otherwise needs to lay off the kool aid.

I really wish they'd gone through with it to the bitter end just so we could see the result, and how rubber-stamp just how hilariously misguided the idea was. And also we would have seen the finer details of that digital trading, family sharing 'awesomeness' that they had in mind.
Yeah, I kept thinking this the moment Sony revealed PS4 wasn't going to do any of the always-online stuff. The contrast would have been interesting

Also, imagine always-online Xbone and MCC.

Off topic, but I gotta be honest... being able to walk in your room, say "Xbox On" and having your system and tv turn on ready to go is really great. Likewise being able to control volume and stuff with your voice is super cool.

On paper it sounds pretty bleh. But once you go back to a console without that feature, you notice it. At least in my experience.

Yeah I'm sure it's a cool, futuristic feature, although I find it cringe worthy to yell at my TV especially when it doesn't work.

But I was just pointing out the the "bells and whistles" don't mean lots of console sales to the other poster.

Penello: "Sony Has Published Meaningless Numbers"

So deliciously painful in hindsight.

Penello: "we touched every single component in the box and everything there is tweaked for optimum performance.”

“I feel like our games and experiences are going to be every bit as good, if not better, technically – on top of all the magic we’re going to add with the instant switching and the power of the cloud.”

I'm sorry but there's nothing particularly new or interesting to be said about that particular excerpt that hasn't been discussed to death already, especially on the subject of the machine's original vision (TV, watercooler, Sports, etc).

Typical Penello stuff aside, there was nothing impressive about Sony's initial PS4 conference. It was basically consisting of a tech demo and controller/PS Eye reveal, they didn't show the console until later.

It's more about Microsoft screwed it. Sony didn't really do anything special: their PS4 vision is pretty the same initial Xbox 360 one. A gamer-friendly and developer-friendly console.

Pretty much. Sony released an inoffensive, all-round competent console, while MS and Nintendo fucked it up.

It's always worked for me, it's very impressive.

Exactly according to the plan:
PS Meeting -> PS4 reveal, specs, software, announcements, etc.
E3 -> console design, price, etc.
Gamescom -> UI, EU games, indies, etc.
Made perfect sense, to keep the momentum and being in the news.

Note: referring to the censored thread title.

Uhm, so I've seen fuck/yadayada/etc thrown around many times here. I don't really care since my grandma could probably embaress most of us here with her foul tounge, if she felt like it, but is that something that is censored now?
I mean what if I wanna say cock-titty-kaka? Or sing Swedish songs about penis's and vulvas? :(

Watchu talking about willis??

I remembered everyone going crazy when they revealed the specs at the event. That thread was a fun read.

It is not only marketing and hardware power. It is more, that Sony listenend to developers and customers. MS on the other hand ignored their customers. And so many Xbox360 fans ignore the Xbox One.

I agree that Sony did things right, and that now even the XB1 is better then it certainly would be if it wasnt E3 2013!

I just think, however, that PS4 is being a little overpraised nowadays. Sony nailed it at E3 but other then supporting indies and the japanese player base, I don't feel like theyre "nailing" it anymore. Their AAA exclusive titles were all quite disappointing until this date, except for Bloodborne.

You make it sound like there is some vast gulf in software between the ps4 and xbone. I could say the same thing about Xbox has no good game apart from Ori which is horse shit.

Also if they are not "nailing" it, why are sales of the system outpacing every console ever except the Wii U?

EA still doesn't get it.

It was the social media crowd that won it for Sony. Pure and simple. Before that E3 conference, that E3 conference, and everything following it. The entire message on the online gaming news cycle pandered to the modern consumer. Twitter, facebook, and messaging boards.

Gossip and rumour destroyed xbox for xbox gamers. Gossip and rumour that was true.

edit: To be clear, I'm sure Sony changed their stance in support of the social media calls/fears/worries/concerns, because they could one up Microsoft, and not because they didn't think the Microsoft model would not benefit them financially.

Anecdotally (personally), I'm not so thrilled about XBL stability on XBONE this gen either.

Really? Beyond the LizardDicks taking down PSN over Christmas, I haven't heard anything negative about XBL. What specifically for you have you had issues with?

my summary of the situation was microsoft was going for something like sony had with the ps3 (bluray was rare and very expensive then so people who wanted a bluray player brought that plus got a game console)

i think microsoft was aiming for the same thing but for entertainment instead replacing your tv box etc but it came to late other devices were around that were alot cheaper etc and people just wanted games.

Sony didn't nail anything.
MS just fucked up big time.

It's incredibly naive to believe that Sony's current success is down to NOTHING other than Microsoft tripping from the first step.

I don't really care for aligning myself with a brand or corporation, last gen I had an Xbox 360, a PS3 and a Wii, this gen I have neither (yet), but Sony deserves the success, they performed at E3 perfectly, they marketed correctly, they priced correctly, they responded to competition correctly and effectively, whilst everyone else got it wrong.

Agreed with this guy completely. Sony delivered what gamers wanted and they absolutely deserve the incredible sales. Now, Microsoft, on the other hand, there's a reason why the 2013 E3 conference is still getting laughed at.
