]It's incredibly naive to believe that Sony's current success is down to NOTHING other than Microsoft tripping from the first step.[/B]

I don't really care for aligning myself with a brand or corporation, last gen I had an Xbox 360, a PS3 and a Wii, this gen I have neither (yet), but Sony deserves the success, they performed at E3 perfectly, they marketed correctly, they priced correctly, they responded to competition correctly and effectively, whilst everyone else got it wrong.

Anyone think arrogant Sony might return for the next round?

I'm thinking the first thing they drop is the plus part of PS plus. No more games with the sub.

I think if we let our guard down they will.

Arrogant Sony is the ever present boogeyman that we must always be vigilant of.

whats that?

What you use your games console for when there are no games to play :)

Never forget.

I somehow doubt it as Sony is positioning Playstation to being a major pillar of the organisation, and integral to it's future long-term financial health.

You have to note that SCE of today is very different to the SCE of old. Basically, without Kutaragi they won't be heading for another $599 system packed with exotic hardware.

I think the same goes for Microsoft. Without Don Mattrick and the Xbone being a massive learning lesson they shouldn't make another blunder like this next time.

Exactly according to the plan:
PS Meeting -> PS4 reveal, specs, software, announcements, etc.
E3 -> console design, price, etc.
Gamescom -> UI, EU games, indies, etc.
Made perfect sense, to keep the momentum and being in the news.
Sony could have done that in any number of ways that would have been better than their initial reveal. It was more brief and teaser' ish than anything else.

In contrast Microsoft's reveal was terrible in terms of concept but they split up the information better by not doing little chunks at a time.

Sony knows what happens when they take stuff for granted better than anyone. They wouldn't be that stupid now that they've found their gold mine again

Before E3 2013

"Sony too, you'll see!!"

After E3 2013

"It was all MS mistakes, not impressed!!"

Sony made the better machine (and cheaper)...

Exactly. Sony made a decision to not screw fans (a decision made tougher some felt because it went against publishers' wishes which Sony would never do for fear of payback and pubs more closely aligning themselves with MS). But the decision paid off.

But "Sony really didn't do anything to win".

Another small example, Sony didn't box their camera to keep costs down, while another company "required it" raising the price. Sony made another wise decision.

But again "Sony really didn't do anything to win".

They learned from their mistakes to make better decisions this time around. Decisions that significantly and positively impacted gamers. How's that ho-hum, and not commendable especially seeing how things have turned out for the other two so far?

Ah well. Opinions, I guess.

This about sums it up for me

Ha! Perfect :)

He pretty much summed up the reasons why I went Sony this platform. If the Xbox didn't have kinnect included and if it wasn't for their original vision I'd have gone with Microsoft as that's where my friends were, but I just couldn't get on board with their shit. The taste is still bitter.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
What i don't understand, is why people refuse to give Sony any credit. It wasn't just because MS fucked up, many of the regions were going to Sony anyway by default and at most MS would have held onto their previously won territories. It was also because Sony made a good machine, marketed and priced it right, and made the right deals with the right devs to make it an appealing product that its a near double knockout with them outpacing their rival in their home territory, the one they were losing by half last gen in.

Nobody in their right mind would have said 360's success in the 7th gen in the West was just because Sony fucked up, and that's even with the huge lead Sony had in the US in the 6th gen. Just like in the current gen, MS came in and offered something more enticing that Sony in their hubris forgot to offer for a time, and they've remembered it eventually. MS had to extend their hand in that way, just like Sony did this time.

Give some credit where its due for everyone

Really? Beyond the LizardDicks taking down PSN over Christmas, I haven't heard anything negative about XBL. What specifically for you have you had issues with?
Dropping voice chat sessions, dropping party sessions mostly. Also, voice temporarily not available in party sessions. Friend list temporarily not available.

My NAT type is open, and my (wired) connection is usually very, very reliable. The issues seemed very much on the server/XBL-side.

These things haven't happened very regularly, but they did happen. Never had any of the sort on 360.

Speaking strictly for myself, I'd say nobody has nailed anything as I neither own nor have any interest in current gen consoles. And I owned and absolutely adored both Sony & MS hardware last gen.

Current-gen hardware on all sides has struck me as extremely disappointing thus far.

For the same reason a lot of sports fans say "we sucked" when their team loses, instead of just acknowledging that the other team was better. They want to give all the credit to their team by basically saying "if we played better, we totally would've won," instead of giving it where it's due, to the actual winners.

Some ppl...

You do realize to capitalize off of another's mistake....means.... you...did something right. Ya know....to capitalize off of that mistake?

Many sports teams, ppl in all different types of markets make mistakes but does the other always capitalize?

Look at the mobile market.....start back to before the Palm Pilot. Fast forward to now. Understand that Apple was there in the very beginning with the Newton. Failed miserably, Palm rose to soaring heights right after with the Pilot.

....Where are both companies now.....

BB and MS had 1-2 position in market share locked down before the iPhone and Android....

Give credit where its due.... Sony could have very well fumbled their launch, message big time too.

Definitely, they are both disappointments, but the PS4 makes a good companion to a gaming pc. If I didn't have my pc I'm sure I would have felt more than a little underwhelmed.

That was my benchmark; My 360 was amazing but I swore off MS because I didn't think they had their heads in the right place for this gen. Odd.

and the power of the cloud

I've noticed that for the past few months we haven't heard the amazing benefits the cloud has been giving the Xbox One.

I have a feeling marketing did surveys and found people thought it was as stupid as it sounded.

Sony definitely deserves this win. Microsoft deserves their loss. The market has spoken. Now if we could speak louder about some other trends ongoing within this fine hobby of ours.

Thats all well and good but at least for me the Xbox One has a better controller and better exclusives. These might easily change, in fact over night, and I'll end up getting a ps4 as well.

"Xbox is about to become the next watercooler"

This was the moment I realized it wasn't a machine designed for gamers.
I still don't understand what that lady meant by this. MS wanted people to stand around the office Xbox chatting about last night's tv shows, instead of doing work?

“Here’s what you care about,” Penello continued. “You bought a system to play great games and have great experiences. I feel like our games and experiences are going to be every bit as good, if not better, technically – on top of all the magic we’re going to add with the insant switching and the power of the cloud.”
Wow that's one I hadn't heard. It just broke my bullshit meter.

i'm pretty sure i've seen this narrative peddled plenty of times on the internet videogame discussion forum neogaf.com

for fanboys, everything is about their fave and how they've done well or badly

I could still see Crackdown using that cloud based processing, with the trailer of the City collapsing and the cloud processing physics demo wih the buildings coming down.

They just talked it up way too much when the consumer demo of the tech would be 3+ years away. I still think it will defiently be the future off video games for both MS and Sony once internet speeds catch up.

She basically meant that the Xbox would become the "Watercooler" topic of choice, I guess like the Wii was in that first period with all the madness and the old people bowling.

Why are we so sure Sony "won"? obviously they are dominating now but the gen is still young, MS can't do anything to close the gap?

Sony were at a worse condition than MS last gen and they still managed to recover and close the gap, so i wouldn't call it "victory" just yet.

Adorable

Typical Penello stuff aside, there was nothing impressive about Sony's initial PS4 conference. It was basically consisting of a tech demo and controller/PS Eye reveal, they didn't show the console until later.

To this day I don't get why people had a problem with Sony not showing the console.
I remember one video after the reveal, I think it was a recap by Matt Lees, said "Don't worry, its just gonna be a black box." And thats basically it.
Was this relevant information to have 9 months prior to release?

I think Sony had an excellent plan, they had the right focus and a brillant marketing campaign.
They knew their market, they knew what their market wanted and they knew how to approach the market.
Microsoft on the other hand bet on the wrong horse, thinking you could get people excited with media capabilties and this day and age was a huge mistake.
They were after the wrong market, therefore had the wrong focus and the wrong marketing.
And now they lost two markets where they were the leader last gen and in the rest of the world they're pretty much irrelevant.

Xbox only really competes in 2 markets - US/UK.

Rest of planet Earth, it's decimation.

The multimedia centric approach is not bad per se, the problem is that it was introduced to the market at the wrong time. The first years of a console are for gaming, for people paying to play first. In the long run the smartphonelike design and multimedia focus will help to mantaing relevancy as it did for PS3. However, by that time exclusive content will be more important and Sony will have the lead with their Vue initiative unlike MS that had to cease the production of exclusive content. Tbh, if you ask me who is the TV TV TV company right now, I'd say Sony.

I went with a day one X1 for those exact same reasons but recently I got a PS4 for MLB and BB. If you aren't interested in the PS4 exclusives you should just stick with X1 IMO.
But I would recommend a PS4 on Bloodborne alone TBH.
If you are used to X1 OS and features the PS4 feels like a BluRay player that also plays games. But for people who already own a Smart TV or media box, the PS4 is really the way to go. I can totally see why MS got his ass kicked by Sony.

Your second paragraph, what's the basis for it? How were Sony in a worse position?

I hope not, I'd rather they spend money putting the power in the console than rely on the Internet to supplement a weaker machine. It makes no sense to invest in something so unreliable.

Is it just me or has practically every major shift in the console wars happened more as a result of somebody fucking things up rather than somebody doing things especially well?

PS1 won because Saturn had nutty hardware, few games, launched at an outrageous price and N64 stuck with the cartridge format. Sony continued to dominate with the PS2 based purely on coasting on brand momentum from PS1. The 360 finally shakes Sony dominance because Sony went full on nutty arrogance and released at a ridiculous price a year late with similar/less powerful hardware- Sony stayed in the race because EU/jpn had strong brand loyalty and because they slashed the price. Sony has re-established dominance now due to Microsoft majorly fucking up with forced kinect buying, higher price, weaker hardware, etc.

Pretty much. I was so turned off by Microsoft's initial plan for the Xbox One as soon as it became evident that they weren't putting gamers first. It felt like a slap in the face after everything they did right with the 360.

(Ironically, I own an XB1 but not a PS4 because the XB1 has a more appealing library to me.)

Looks like you liked their backpedal a lot then.

Completely disagree.
The PS4 Meeting (and their concept/plan) was nicely done.
The XBO reveal was terrible.

Sony did luck out with DDR5 memory becoming cheaper. Not sure if that alone really makes that much of a difference though. It's like MS forgot what made the 360 so popular, especially hardware-wise for developers.

Yes, I think you have a point here. A 4 gb ddr5 ps4 would have a harder time to be accepted as the graphically more capable console by the main audience. And the costumers perception of what is "clearly" the more powerful new toy is more important then a brand. And that is where Microsoft messed up. So in the end, yes Sony was very lucky there.

To say ' they got lucky ' implies they threw darts at a board to plan their strategy. They planned the ps4 around GDDR5 from the start, and they knew there would be a very strong chance they would be able to increase from 4 to 8 well before production started.

It wasn't luck, but good planning. It's left them with more to play with OS-wise, but ps4 would still be performing as well with 4GB.

Never a doubt in mind that Sony absolutely deserves their victory.

Sometimes when I read this is all ENTIRELY based on MS's blunders really do not sit well with me. It cheapens the efforts and the ingenuity Sony displayed...
Yes. Sony had their act together years ago and it culminated in the PS4. MSFT blundered but Sony is just spanning the keister when it comes to games.

That's a good point he makes about the PS4 is that even if sony actually WANTED to make it more then a games system they couldn't afford to. Their smaller company size and debt issues was actually an asset in this situation
