John wick is like the hitman version of god of war and kratos lol.

Now hes against all the gods. Winston is definitely his father.

This was a good sequel that didn't quite meet my expectations. But I guess it had to do some of the lifting that the first film didn't do since it wasn't designed to have any sequels and I felt the pacing in this movie had to suffer for it. Also, the director and editing of John Wick was better so naturally after all this I felt that the pacing and action (memorable scenes) to be better which is what I truly care about in films like these. The dialogue (or lack of) and characters were better in John Wick as well.

John Wick 2 did a good job expanding the world on a movie that was meant to be a a single movie and it also did a good job I thought setting up John Wick 3. I'm not exactly sure I understand the whole
marker
thing. If someone would be kind enough to ELI5, I'd appreciate it.

I look forward to the next one

Holy shit this movie blew me away. I tried to go in not expecting anything, similar to what I did with JW1 though.

That club scene may possibly be my favorite movie action scene ever. It was pure insanity.

Really loved this. Surpassed the original. I think it successfully did what The Raid 2 tried to do, which was to successfully build on and expand on the 1st movie.

Thanks to that other thread, I realized the finale of this is practically a movie adaptation of doing an S-rank run in Hotline Miami. Throwing weapons at enemies to stun them, dealing with limited ammo and dropping empty guns to grab new ones, moving from room to room and enemy to enemy in a fluid frenzy of lead and death.

Heh. That's a pretty apt comparison.

What a movie.

I need Carrie Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving in JW3.

I NEEDS IT

Hahaha my friend I discussed this after the movie today... That really would be amazing. Particularly because the movie would likely come out in 2019- the 20 year anniversary of the Matrix.

Anyway, absolutely spectacular movie. THAT'S how you do an action flick... Perfectly paced, amazing shootouts, great hand-to-hand combat, and just campy enough to elicit a few well-placed chuckles.

Better than the original, IMO. What's the general consensus about how this movie compares to the first?

Off topic for john wick 2 but one thing that was always on my mind was in the first film, william dafoe saved john wick but we never know the reason why. I always kept getting the feeling it was his son or someone who was super important to him. Anyone else feel that way?

How full are these showings? I may be able to go tomorrow morning but at the moment I will not be able to use online shit like fandango to presecure tickets.

Felt like a mentor relationship to me

If there's a third installment I hope there's an antagonist on the level of Michael Nyqvist (loved, loved Viggo) because the lack of a presence like that was the one major problem I had with part 2.

Enjoyed it thoroughly.

A little disappointed in some aspects of the world building which I found to be kind of silly. Namely the
League of Extraordinary Bums
.

Gotta a lot of vibes from this movie in the vein of Wanted, that Angelina Jolie movie that came out in 08'. I guess that comes when you have to make the sequel bigger and badder though, you can't match the first film's smaller scope and tightness.

I love Reeves. Can't wait for 3.

Really I thought that was extremely well done, a great way to get eyes everywhere. They're obviously not really bums, you can see them in the change room.

The ending piece with Ian McShane I thought got a little silly, it dropped a lot of the uniqueness of the assasins guild.

It's not really far-fetched to think that they're close friends or something like that. Quite a number of people seem to be fond of Wick beyond the professionalism of the industry like Addy (the bartender at the Continental), Winston (again,
the final scene where you can clearly see the tears in his eyes as he ordered the excommunication of Wick
is surprisingly touching), Charon (the receptionist guy), the Rome's Continental manager, Aurelio, etc etc.

I didn't get the deal with the medallion thing. Is that a ownership kind of thing? I was blown away by the action and the loud ass speakers in the theater that I didn't understand what it meant lol.

Thinking back, with such a large body count in both movies, Wick has
killed only two women right? The violin playing Assassin in the metro station and Santino's bodyguard? And Ares is played by a gender fluid actress. Wonder if it was a conscious decision.

An oath/promise, "signed in blood". Like how the Bowery King said "you owe me" to Wick. But the Continental have exact records for that.

She may not be dead. And most movies tend to avoid putting men and women in the direct combat situations with each other.

So the trailers made this look like the tone had completely changed from the first movie - is that true? :

I dunno about "completely", but it is pretty different. That whole encounter with lady D'Antonio had a totally different feel than the first movie, but there are so many specific callbacks and invocations of the first that it's more an expansion of tones than a shift. There's some things about 2 that make me uncomfortable as I've sat with it, but if you liked 1 you'll have a good time watching 2.

Interesting notice but I wouldn't read too far into it. It's not like he's going out of his way to spare women. He obviously would've capped Perkins except that he was in the Continental. If we put an asterisk on that one, he's killed every woman he's fought, just there aren't that many assassin ladies.

Oh definitely not a Wick thing. More of a movies in general thing I guess.
It just stood out a little here.

And I think Ares is dead too.

So when the manager gave it to him at the end the promise was that he bought him one hour before the contract went live?

pretty clear to me she died. Towards the end we see that there are quite a bit of female assassins but I guess wick hasn't really encountered any of em.

the film made a point to show wick
pulling the knife out of her chest, unlike what he did to cassian, she's 99% dead

So when the manager gave it to him at the end the promise was that he bought him one hour before the contract went live?

I was a bit unclear about that too. If it was Wick owing him a favour, Wick would have had to put his bloody fingerprint on it and the person who is owed (Winston here) would hold the Medallion.

I think he gave Wick a blank medallion to use in the future to trade for any help required. But if he is Excommunicado, would the medallion and oath hold any value? I guess they have something planned for JW3.

The third option is of course that he is indicating that he owes John a favour. Maybe he considers that John actually helped him keep his post as the NYC Continental's chief.

I just got home from seeing it. As far as action goes, this is better than the original. But plot-wise I still think I prefer the first movie. I think the more complicated plot of John Wick Chapter 2 bogged down the movie a little bit. Not enough to dampened my enjoyment of it. But it wasn't the same non-stop thrill ride like the original was.

In the original you had a man on a revenge mission. It was simple and effective.

I love Chapter 2. Definitely a worthy sequel. Lawrence Fishburn is fantastic as always, but so is everyone else.

John fight with Cassian is great.

I can't wait for Chapter 3 especially now that
John is on the run, no support, no backup, no help. Literally a man against the world.

It kinda give me chill down my spine knowing that literally anyone can be an assassin, and John has to watch every single person he come across. Trust no one now.

Lol so it wasn't just my showing. Holy shit it was loud. The opening sequence of car chases. I couldn't even hear myself think.

Anyway, the medallion signified a blood oath or an IOU.

Basically whoever blood is in that medallion owes the owner a favor or I guess an assassination. When the contract is completed, the owner put his own bloody thumb print next to the assassin's print and in the book, which complete the IOU.

First off, which other thread?

And secondly, John Wick has pretty much always been the movie adaptation of Hotline Miami. When I was watching the club scene in the first, I immediately thought that it was basically a level in HM with the way the smooth action went well together with the pumping techno music that wouldn't be out of place in HM, and the fact that the main villains were all Russians. I believe somebody even posted a link to part of the club scene from JW synched up with one of the tracks from HM in the previous JW thread.

EDIT: Found it.

I think JW2 is even more like HM considering he throws his weapon several times. When he first did it with the machine gun in the catacombs, I got HM flashbacks.

No. How does she feel about hyper violent movies?

She can handle mass movie murder, just not of dogs (I at least understand her sentiment). Thanks!

It's interesting that in a flick about professional murder, a dead dog is where a lot of people seem to check out - even though the movie then goes on to avenge said pupper with a body count nearing the triple digits. Equally absurd is that, for those of us that remain on board, the dead dog seems to be incredibly effective as a motivation for mass murder.

I mean, I get it (animals are innocent, the Russian mob is bad, revenge is good) - but still, movie-logic is weird. Or maybe people are. I don't know.

In fairness it was a pretty cute pupper/his actions would have held up in any court of law.

Anyone notice that booze is really expensive?

I'll take a couple custom tailored tactical armored super suits, an arsenal, and keys to some century old locks. These few coins should cover it.

I'll have a gin and bourbon. A coin should cover it.

Winston was so utterly unfazed by Santino's threats the latter came off like a spoiled teenager throwing a tantrum. It's clear that a High Table seat is akin to royalty and holds more sway than Continental Management in some ways (Winston was always sure to address D'Antonio as "sir", if at times a little sardonically), but whether Santino could actually have Winston removed from his position isn't clear. I'm guessing not.

When 1 coin is the lowest denomination of currency, it's going to be skewed a little bit lol

Honestly, I wonder if the coins are more used as gratuity only

I just assumed it was a tab or something and they only pay once in a while..

I was under the assumption that Winston was in control of all the continentals since he had all that power to get John that one hour. I'm going by what he tells Santino that the Continental is his Kingdom.

Went to see this movie today and it was fuggin' awesome. So much going on it's hard to wrap my head around it. Make no mistake the next movie will be epic. I'm looking forward to seeing what John does.

To be honest, I hope John lives through these movies, because I feel like the guy just wants to be left alone and to live some kind of normal life, yet these bastards keep pulling him back in. Even people tell them they're being stupid for messing with the guy. At this point, I'm starting to think that they're all better off dead. If they want to be dumb and keep messing with the guy, then they deserve what they have coming to them. Hope John is able to find some peace when all of this is said and done. I'm definitely rooting for him in the next movie.

This is a movie worth seeing.

I'm under the impression that the high seats are like nations. But Winston is like the Pope, everyone is welcome in his home, but you don't fuck around in his house, you definitely don't fuck with the Pope.

thats what you call a very generous tip :p

Aaronology misattributing quotes worse than the GOP :p

But Continental Rome had a different chief - Julius. So I am thinking they are some sort of "lifetime appointees" put in place by the High Table with maybe a way for their status to be revoked too.

I don't actually like the action in either of the movies, especially anytime there's a slow-as-hell hand to hand fight, but I love the weird-ass hitman society they have. It actually feels like someone sat down and made a cohesive universe and even though John Wick is the superhero, I could see a movie following anyone in this world that would be just as interesting.
