Jonah Hill on Calling a Paparazzo "Faggot"

Here's my problem with this though...
When people say "retarded" do you think actual retarded people won't be hurt by this as well?
Someone brought up the word "lame" and actual lame people
"Dumb blondes"
"Hillbilly" "Hick"
"Terrorist" "are you gonna blow everyone up now?" (I deal with this a lot)
In not gonna mention them all but there are a ton more.

Why is it that people who happen to like the same type of sex have to be entitled to some type of protection by the media/others, that is not entitled to these other groups of people or not as much so? Part of being "normalized" in society is accepting that there is an insulting word/stereotype/slur with everyone group of people. I have a few gay friends and what really annoys them is when people make a big deal about an insulting word. It's really just a word in the end. They don't want/need the protection.

*gets told by multiple LGBT people why using faggot isn't okay

"Uh but MY gays are cool with it!"

Ah yes, uppity gays trying to monopolise the right to be offended. Here we are.

Pretty sure people aren't cool with "retarded" either. It is definitely a sore sport for anyone who has mentally handicapped family members.

Lame hasn't been used to refer to physical disability in a long time I'm pretty sure. It isn't the case with "gay" or "faggot" where those words currently ARE used to refer to homosexual individuals.

Calling someone a "terrorist" if they had darker skin or a beard would likely be seen as incredibly inappropriate.

Not really. He basically said "but what about these OTHER offensive words. I'm going to assume gay people are cool with using these ones!" Implied hypocrisy isn't "well put." And saying "I have gay friends who are ok with me using a slur, so you should too" isn't a particularly great argument. I'm sure you can find black people who are alright with being called "nigga" by their non-black friends. That doesn't make the word acceptable in the vast majority of cases.

*gets told by multiple LGBT people why using faggot isn't okay

I'm personally not bothered by it if I know the person doesn't mean it that way. Of course, as with any word or topic you can't just go through conversations trying to use black and white rules of what is and isn't okay. As far as I'm concerned, I just try to choose what to talk about depending on who I'm talking to.

Amazing, you get called terrorist and yet are unable to see how gays would not like the word fag to be thrown around. When you are ready to leave your solipsist bubble let us know.

yeah we sure get treated real special

you realize that none of us want anyone to get treated like shit and called offensive things, right? bringing up "oh but THESE people get called THIS" is just...such a lame way to try and sidetrack an argument, honestly. Being accepted in society does NOT mean that you can generalize and insult us in any fashion, nor does it mean that we somehow deserve it.

i don't call people faggots, i don't use nigger in conversation, i don't call things retarded, and i can admit that I use the word bitch more than i should, but i'm aware of it and try to catch myself and not use it. i also don't particularly like being called faggot, spic, or any other kind of insult like that. for me, those aren't just as simple as calling something dumb or stupid.

Some of my best friends are faggots. They don't mind it, so why should you? Besides, everyone has to put up with shit, so how come you people have to get social protection? Why can't you just suffer in silence like the rest of the minorities should?

Yeah, if anything using the word gay as "Stupid" in a way makes it harder to be accepted in society because it can sometimes subconsciously make a lot of people feel that being gay is a negative trait after repeated use.

Is it bad that it took me a second to realize this was sarcasm? I actually thought you were being serious for a moment.

The less people bring up South Park ever, the better.

We've all seen enough celebrity public apologies and what not to spot the genuine ones from the fake PR whitewashes. This is legit and it's classy and it's smart of Jonah. Ideally it shouldn't even come to mind but that's his point and he's owning up to his flaws, which is... uncommon. Sure, he's got a movie to promote but he's been putting the apology first, rather than as an ugly footnote to some press tour shenanigans.

Jonah hill filled with words.

If you're going to make fat jokes, at least make them funny, dude.

I mean it is an ok comedy show. The problem is when people think it somehow has deep and well thought out political/social ideologies. It doesn't. The show also loves to run on false equivalences.

It doesn't speak highly of the level of discourse on this subject lately, that's for certain. At least my satire was hitting the right marks.

This thread makes me want to drink.

Excuse me, but "both sides are bad the truth is somewhere in the middle" is the height of discourse and is by no means the hallmark of an intellectually shallow pseud

I don't think people should be called "faggot" or you should insult someone because of their sexual orientation or anything, but out of curiosity what do people think is a trait that is acceptable to be made fun of?

Again, please don't quote this and call me a homophobe or whatever since I'm not advocating this but I'm genuinely curious as to why, if you're going to insult someone at all, it's more acceptable to insult one thing over another. Is it that if you insult someone based on their sexual orientation you're presumed to dislike that entire group of people? Does that apply to making fun of someone's intelligence or unattractiveness or etc.? Are the only valid insults the ones that have no real personal attachment, like 'asshole' or something?

I probably worded that incorrectly. I meant that they aren't necessarily okay with those words being thrown around. But they don't like having national media attention even more.

intelligence and attractiveness are not based on race, gender, or sexuality.

edit: and intelligence may not be the best thing to insult people on either.

edit 2: i pretty much avoid insulting people when I can, unless i'm making fun of their opinions, or how bad they are at video games.

why are people so desperate to make fun of each other.

I make sure to find the most offensive insult I can think of and then say it in an exaggerated tone so I can pass it off as just fuckin around when they get upset
BUT THE DAMAGE IS DONE

Because these are all exactly the same as a word that has been used to oppress, and also in conjunction with violence against, a minority.

Also, retarded as an insult is totally looked down upon.

As an unattractive person, I don't see others like me getting told we're subhuman shit or terrible sinners or "evolutionary mistakes" because we don't look like models.

Historical context matters a lot.

I know this, I'm just wondering why making fun of trait x is more or less offensive than making fun of trait y. If I'm insulting someone's sexuality why is this more offensive than insulting someone's appearance or etc.? I'm genuinely interested what the reasons for this are.

As for the last part, I agree I guess, but until you start expecting every human to get along then insults will happen :(

Unattractive crew. People don't need to tell us these things since we already know (╯︵╰,)

Once we had an American proffessor giving us some classes in my symphony band(using a translator as we speak spanish), one day he threw an scream at some boy and began callling him a n****, I was the only one who understood it so I asked the guy what the fuck was going on. The boy (13 y.o max) in the band didn't have his score and was asking the american guy for it, he pointed at him and yelled "el fagot, el fagot". Fagot means basso in in spanish.

Yeah it was hell of awkward.

Ah yes, the "universe runs on the average of the two most popular positions." hypothesis.

I probably worded that incorrectly. I meant that they aren't necessarily okay with those words being thrown around. But they don't like having national media attention even more.
The point is that "my friends think x" has no value or position in a conversation, because it's a fallacy, and it also presumes that they can or do speak for everyone who is gay/black/whatever. Your friends don't speak for me or share my views, and using what they think is meaningless, particularly when it's to argue it doesn't matter because they don't think it matters. I think it matters, why does my opinion matter less? It's an argument that is meaningless because it doesn't actually address the points people are making, it just tries to dismiss them.

Because when I call someone stupid or ignorant, I'm insulting them, singularly, as a person. If I call someone a faggot, I'm saying using a slur against a minority to say someone's gay, with the implication that being gay is bad. It draws on the history of the word and intense repulsion at the idea of being gay to insult someone.

I have honestly never heard anyone use "faggot" as a derogatory term towards a gay person, it has always been a general insult like asshole. I'm not saying it's cool to fling it around, but as someone who plays a lot of online games the word has lost all impact.

I can say the same thing about the word "nigger", but that doesn't change a thing.

I'm glad you added this, as it hasn't been addressed once in this thread. What a well thought out and reasonable position.

It's that you are insulting the entire group. If I write "I hate faggots" all over the walls of a gay persons house I'm not just attacking that person but I'm attacking all gay people who see it. I'm sending a message to the gay community that you are not wanted. Like burning a cross on someone's lawn, the target was the entire black community, not just the lawn owner.

Whenever people say it it's kind of in a joking manner where I can tell they really don't mean it (it's usually in a situation where I'm upset about something). I guess it's them making fun of the stereotype more than it is attacking me.

Right. But I've missed what stereotype we are talking about. If you're just randomly being called a terrorist, then I don't understand why. If it's because you're of Middle Eastern descent, then you'd have every right to be offended.

Think about the other insults that get thrown around in online games. Does anti-semitism just mean "asshole"? Have racist epithets lost all of their impact?

Just because saying something hateful doesn't take much effort or thought doesn't mean that hearing something hateful can't be personally painful.

As a gay guy who has played a lot of online games it still stings every time.
Sorry to hear that man. I've managed to harden my heart enough from growing up online that it by itself doesn't prompt much but an eye roll, but people acting homophobic still pushes buttons. I play a lot of ESO now after forgoing MMOs for years, and I was taken aback by how vile chat got at times. Nothing like seeing people think you wanting to marry is akin to marrying animals to remind you that this shit ain't over.

That's the point I was making, that using words change in regards to faggot doesn't actually hold any water, because it ignores the way words change, as explained by Mumei and others in this thread. Of course the person I quoted didn't give a shit, because living in an ignorant world is much easier.
Ah sorry I misunderstood your post.
