Joss Whedon Returns To TV With HBO’s “Nevers”

Definitely on my watch list, Joss Whedon has never made a bad TV Show. I’ll watch anything he makes.

The fantastical story follows a group of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.
Whedon dubs this the most ambitious narrative he’s ever created and says it “has been too long since I created an entirely new fictional world.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the best show ever made.

I'll be checking out the new show though. Whedon paired with HBO means it can probably be darker than most of his work.

I used to like Whedon, but after his wife has exposed how he uses his shows to sleep with his female stars, it is a bit creepy to watch. It feels somehow dirty.

Humans have been using their achievements and accomplishments to get mates since the dawn of time.

Of course, I understand that.

But Whedon always presented himself as this great feminist, it feels all so disingenuous. I can separate the art from the artist and I will watch the show, of course, but he somehow leaves this bad taste in my mouth.

If he would have been straight about all of this, I could have respected that. But this sleazy, I am feminist and all this oh so holy behavior, really makes it worse.

Ex-wife out for blood you mean.
Not the best source and doesn’t explain why the same actors want to continue working with him.

Because none of them would have a career without him

Also I don't believe he ever called her a liar. Either he is so much of a feminist that he lacks the basic balls to defend his own name, or it's all true. Either way, he is a bitch

Whedon was amazing but I feel he's been mentally slipping more and more lately as has the quality of his work and this sounds incredibly awful already.

With one female star, going by her statements.

If you are going to have an affair with someone, it is probably going to be someone you work with an spend a lot of time with outside your spouse. So it would obviously be one of the stars.

I don't think having an affair necessarily makes you a harasser. Unless he was going after Dawn (IIRC she was underage) all it is is a betrayal of his wife.

I hope it is gritty, realistic, and features women FIRMLY in the victorian mindset, not 21st century "empowered" women with 1890's window dressing. I don't want rail thin petite damsels suddenly tossing 250 pound brutes around like ragdolls, secret "I'm a super scientist!" tropes, or "I'm a lesbian out to destroy the patriarchy!". I want women who put family first, accept their roles in society and see their own pre-feminist value within those roles, work behind the scenes to boost their husbands standing in society, get into catfights with their neighbors over who can throw the best party, etc. Stuff real people from that era would have done. "guuurl power!" is over played at this point, Joss needs to shake things up with a more practical look.

His TV work has always been great so I am interested even if it sounds a bit lame on paper. Plus Summer Glau in Victorian dress will be nice (I am just assuming she is in it).

If you don't like Firefly it's time for introspection.

It’s fine. I saw it a while after most people so I think years of hearing people talk about it like it’s an all time great show set the bar too high for me and left me thinking “that’s it?”

Everything he has done since Buffy has received attention. The guy filmed a Shakespeare adaptation in his own house and it got coverage. This isn’t a case of people suddenly paying more attention to him because of his politics.
How many people get accused of manipulating/raping multiple women, and then just waltz back into Hollywood as if nothing happened?

Anyone else, that story would hound them for the rest of their careers, if not life. Not Joss. Why? He is a SJW. He says all the right things, tweets all the woke crap, and is constantly pushing some feminist talking point, even after everyone knows what he did.

A bunch. Woody Allen still has a career. Roman Polanski is still getting nominated for awards. These kinds of rules don’t apply to the people that run in those circles

Woody Allen can't make a movie without normal people bringing up his past.

Roman Polanski can't even get back into this country

Yeah Joss is a cheating bastard, but his shows and movies are universally good (yes, even Dollhouse was inventive AF) so I'm totally in if he has his focus 100% on this thing.

Woody Allen can make movies despite people bringing up his past. That’s the point. He’s (supposedly at least) the father of the guy that’s the driving force behind the #metoo movement who has directly condemned him and Allen was basically the inspiration for the whole thing. If that whole thing is really so powerful then how come he’s making whatever movie he likes, whenever he likes with stars lining up to be in it?

Same with Polanski. Him not being able to get in the country hasn’t stopped him having a career and people in the industry speaking out to defend him.

Joss Whedon’s politics isn’t what saved his career from those allegations. Him being a notable figure in the industry did.

I'm so ready for original IP from Whedon. He needs to steer clear ofworking with other people's established universes. Dude is too creative for that.

Straight into my cock vein plz, Mr. Whedon.

As I said in another thread. His writing is awful. I never liked any of his shows. His Avengers movies have aged like shit. The fact that he's a two-faced male feminist is just icing on the cake.

Firefly/Serenity are awesome in my book. Admittedly part of it is that when it comes to sci-fi my favorite types of story are "assholes in space" (as dubbed by Pat of the Youtube group Best Friends Play, meaning mercenaries or the sort who get by on going odd-jobs and such) like this show, Guardians of the Galaxy, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star. I'm not saying I don't enjoy some Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and the like, but I definitely prefer a bunch of folks in a rough spaceship just trying to get through the day.

I remember not watching Firefly for like 3 years after my friend highly recommended it, since he first praised it as by the guy that made Buffy.

Hollywood was fucked up back in the early 00's and extremely hypocritical. A film that had a barely 17 year old girl have a topless scene in a movie (which was not a body double) won the oscar for best picture. In a scene where nudity didn't really add anything to the movie.

How the fuck that was kept out of media coverage still blows my mind to this day. Plus the fact that directors were asking someone who was barely 17 years old to do a topless scene in a movie is fucked up.

Who was the rumored actress? Dushku? I don't see him having the balls to pull that on SMG, she doesn't seem like the type to put up with that bullshit. Dushku fits the bill after being cast on Buffy, Angel and Dollhouse. Plus she always seemed kind of crazy lol.

Eh, it always seemed like there was a weird riff between SMG and Whedon. There was definite tension between SMG and Dushku that showed on screen.

I took a film course in school, where my instructor used Joss Whedon as the theme for the semester. Exploring the narrative of his work, and themes present. I had never really watched any of his stuff up to that point, outside of his Avengers movie, so I wasn't really familiar with him.

We watched the first 12 episodes of Buffy, the whole series Firefly, and Serenity, some of Dollhouse, and Cabin in the Woods. I loved that course, and I really ended up getting an appreciation for his work because of it. Firefly was an awesome show, and I didn't think it was something I'd be into before watching it.

Interesting concepts often poorly executed. Dollhouse was a great example of that. The premise was fantastic, but the actual world-building was pretty terrible when you dug into it. Same with Firefly.

The only thing I really enjoyed by Whedon was the first Avengers film. That was a fun movie and he did the amazing task of putting all these superheroes together in one film and making it work.

Age of Ultron though, was a huge letdown because it highlighted to me the real flaws in Whedon's writing. Stuff like:

- Characters all talking like smartasses and having no unique voice
- Out-of-character dumbassery for the sake of drama
- Treating the main villain like a joke. It worked for Loki because he still felt like a threat and was aided by Tom Hiddleston's fantastic performance. But Ultron was utterly ruined which is sad because he is one Marvel's greatest bad guys.

I was elated when the Russo Brothers took over from Whedon and made Infinity War and Endgame. I don't think I would have wanted to see what Whedon did with Thanos.

My thoughts are almost the exact opposite, I thought Dollhouse had great world building from what, on the face of it, looked like a flimsy premise.
Firefly pretty much delivered on it's wild west in space premise.
Both shows never really got the chance to develop their world building before being cancelled though.
