Appeals courts have all ruled in favour of Gawker in other parts of this case.

Hogan got the ruling he did because he sued in Florida thus giving him the home court advantage among the jury, it's also why Gawker lost so one sidesly.

Quite frankly they deserved to lose. Gawker's ethically bankrupt and gives the entire profession a bad name. FOX News manages to be a more ethical news organization than Gawker--and that says a lot.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Yeah, screw all those good decent people that work for their sister sites like kotaku, jalopnik, etc they can all lose their jobs right? I'm all for them getting theirs, but dude, really?

Gotta break eggs to make an omelette.

Putting shitty companies out of business usually involves decent people losing their jobs. It's unavoidable. There are entire industries (such as coal) that we'll be better off for no longer having around despite people losing their jobs. You can be glad that a shitty company is no longer in business while simultaneously feeling bad that people will lose their jobs as a result.

Sure I feel bad for them, but they chose to work for an organization like that.

Couldn't have said it better. It'll suck yes, but the good journalists people are worried about will get through this.

If they do or not my post was about the reality that they have a good shot in appeals unlike what the poster I was replying to was saying.

Makes you wonder after all the bad press if where Daulerio is if they'll want to keep him around, I mean would you want that kind of guy in charge as CEO?

Until this withstands appeal, I'm convinced it will all be reduced down by a judge to around $30 million total or less. And then settled for even less.

Average awards for wrongful death are in the $3-4 million range.

Hogan's privacy is apparently worth as much as 40 regular people's lives

Not to be rude, but a normal person would have never gotten this much. This is a ridiculous amount of money. Just 1% of that would change my life. :(

They knew who they were signing up to work for.

A normal person doesn't portray a character that is essentially a brand that can demonstrate income.

Am I a bad person for liking jalopnik?

The blogs and contributors in question aren't the issue. It's not even the Gawker blog itself necessarily. It's the parent company as a business, the owners, and to a much lesser extent editorial staff that allowed this to happen that people [like me at least] have issue with.

This is around the time when I started my dislike for their practices.

Think of it as the Gawker owners and leadership failing their staff by being reckless and unethical, exposing their staff to litigation and damages by association.

This is reductionary and a non-sequitur. His racism is irrelevant to the ruling.
People have been profiting off of racism a lot if you think about it.
Hulk inadvertently got millions off his privacy being invaded.

Donald Sterling inadvertently got billions after his privacy was invaded

Paula Deen was dancing with the Stars getting thousands of dollars to destroy the Nè Nè

Follow the money

That's assuming they can raise the capital (50m) to appeal it in the first place.
They have the option of starting payments too I think. They have to start payment immediately and there can be no other delays as the appeal process plays out.

So not sure if it goes to a court managed trust as appeal awaits or to Hogan directly. But it avoids them having to come up with that chunk of change overnight.

Sad that certain innocent people are also going down; though you have to question if they decided to work for a shady company because they wanted to or because they were in dire need of a stable job. I truly hope those that fall into the latter category find a new job.

Hulkbro should donate some of that money towards some inner cities services that provide resources for families struggling; would help his image since it's so hard to stand by him. He's ignorant (or racist) but so many people grew up with him that they want to give him a 2nd try. .

Nah, Gawker media has some fantastic sites under it.

io9, Kotaku. Jezebel, Deadspin, I'll miss these.

Kotuka and Deadspin are fine. Jezebel is straight up tabloid gutter trash. The one site most clearly aligned to the ethos and ethics of its owner.

I'm still amazed at the stupidity that Daulerio exhibited during the deposition. In what world is making a sarcastic remark about child pornography ever acceptable. The lawyers must've been facepalming.

Anyone being THAT stupid deserves to lose the company. As much as it sucks to lose jobs, I have no sympathy for Gawker.

Wait a minute, Jalopnik and Deadspin are done? They'll be sold off or something, not shut down outright, right?

Nobody knows what the outcome would be at this point as the appeals process hasn't even completed yet.

I'm just lamenting possible worst case scenarios.

Somebody stop the damn match!

Lol, Kimmel going in there at the end.

If that's what Gawker really wanted to be, they deserve to go down, as does anyone who willingly chose to associate with their brand.

I love their excuse. "It's citizen journalism! We don't control the content! Not all of it is true!"

That woman looked like a deer caught in the headlights.

As awful as gawker is, knowing this bigoted piece of shit is walking away with 135 million is appalling.
