Justice Clarence Thomas, a reliable conservative vote on the Supreme Court, is mulling retirement after the presidential election, according to court watchers.

Thomas, appointed by former President George H.W. Bush and approved by the Senate after a bitter confirmation, has been considering retirement for a while and never planned to stay until he died, they said. He likes to spend summers in his RV with his wife.

Really puts this election into perspective.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
And this is why voting for a viable Presidential candidate that will pick people to sit on the Supreme Court that will continue to move this country forward is so, so important.

Another Conservative justice for Clinton to replace.

How big is the liberal/progressive advantage going to be on the Supreme Court after Clinton is done with her first term I wonder...

6-3 to 7-2 from the look of it. She could have one of the most important presidencies in modern times just based off the number of Supreme Court justices she could wind up replacing.

Overturn the 2nd Amendment.

We'd need huge Congressional majorities for that, but Heller would easily be struck down and we could start moving on gun control like it was the 90's again.

Hilarious. Republicans shooting themselves in the foot by blocking Obama's nomination.

At least he might've gone with a more middle of the road choice in order to get something through before he left office.

Now Clinton has the ability to step in and select the candidates she really favours.

What are you going to pubbies? Block 2 supreme court nominations for 8 years?

I'm curious to see at what point they cut bait and try to confirm Garland.

Depends how you define those terms. Better question might be "how not old corporatist shill will the new court be?"

I can't remember specifics but he's said some shit that's made me seethe once or twice. I hope he does leave before he dies, that way I can actually be happy when he leaves his seat.

This is why all the "vote with your conscience" people need to look at the larger picture, in my mind.

So you're telling me Democratic President could get to replace BOTH Scalia and Thomas. PLEASE let this be true.

Oh man, this would mean the court could conceivably be a 7-2 majority by the next presidential election.

6-3 would be good too.

It's happening! :)

Depends of people GOTV.

Bernie or Bust (basically Green-Rainbow) need to realize their estranged friends from their enemies.

Almost all shitty corporatist legislation the last 40 years has gotten rubber stamped by a GOP stacked SCOTUS.

Here's a real chance to change that, while the long job of electing progressives to congress to pass better laws continues.

get some go again
woo! now more than ever we need to get hillary elected. we can seriously make a ton of progress going forward

Let's add another dimension of flavor to this conversation:
we're one month away from Anthony Kennedy's 80th birthday.
ginsburg can now retire as well and her seat can go to a much younger judge.

Thomas looking to retire, Kennedy up there in years, RBG will likely step down during a Hillary term if elected.

This election is directly about the Supreme Court this time around.

When Hillary gets in they'll probably pressure him to stay on.

I wonder if he's made this known to nudge the conservatives into "better get the guy you like than the one you hate".

This seems like a barely sourced bit of fear-mongering to bring rightwing folks into line.

The minute there's an inkling of that, Obama will probably withdraw him.

Naw he wouldnt. Only after the presidential election if Hillary was elected would he do that. He actually likes Garland, and would move the court left, sooo.

I just read up that is somehow legal for the Senate to refuse to deliberate on Obama's nominee. That is fucked.

This election is more important than ever. Even if you don't care for Hillary, you should still vote for her if only because of this, and she is the "not Trump" option.

Nah, Garland is a decent pick and would be a good justice.
I also think the optics of playing politics like that, after spending months of accusing Senate Republicans of playing politics over Garland, would also not be a very good look.
