K-pop band Oh My Girl detained at Los Angeles airport on suspicion of prostitution

Why would they be detained any longer than it takes to pull out a phone and show one of their music videos?

Because racist custom officials aren't great at telling Asian people apart?

And hey, look, more evidence about how anti-sex work laws hurt women. Shock.

Hahaha. If can see why Immigration would be mistaken. But it also looks like their agency tried to bring them over on tourist visas and officials became suspicious.

can someone please unravel this for me, how does one syllable = damn this is dope

You mean one under age girl with dresses. Look them up, their costumes are not even as sexual as everything Arianne Grande seems to wear on a regular basis.

Still, the story probably seems less believable sense they didn't have the proper Visas to perform in the united States. They claimed to be a music group but didn't have the proper documentation and they gave dodgy improper answers. Seriously it's not hard to see how this happened without breaking mging racism into it.

Young girls with sexual costumes with adults clearly not related to them giving dodgy answers. Yeah, it's not hard at all to see how this would happen without bringing racism into it. Also Korea has it's own issues with racism.

That and the vast amount of rumors of sexual "favors" required to get into K Pop and Fashion industries...

those immigration officers are really ignorant about kpop.

most kpop idols are really pure/innocent. a large majority are virgins. most don't even know what sex is.

Groups like this legit weird me out, they look so fake.

I don't blame LAX, a group of youngish girls being chaperoned around by older men is uhm, interesting.
Popstars managers are usually 20 years old?

Edit: not blaming lax in general, but that specific comment seems weird.

As asian I'm always surprised with "they looks twelve" from these kind of thread, most of time they looks their age for me.

Yall western dude have some monster like looking teens or what.

Yes, please, please don't.

The costumes they wear definitely take it too far. I don't doubt this was the primary issue.
Too far, really? From what I get from google search, it's a lot tamer than what american popstars wear. Look up what people like Arianne Grande or Katy Perry wear.

That part I do understand. I am just irritated by the jumping in the thread regarding their cloth and how they look. That's what most post concentrate about.

15 hours? If the band has any degree of fame, it shouldn't have taken that long to become vetted.

I could legit marry any one of 'em... i dont even care which one.
They're so cute (✿◠‿◠)

That's great. Thanks for sharing.

Sarcasm? I hope? Please.....
I am pretty sure those kinds of groups are instructed to at least maintain that image to avoid fan ire. The fans must be some seriously weird people, I believe I remember some girl had to leave her group and apologize to her fans for getting a boyfriend. It might have been a jpop star though.

What. The. Fuck....

This is why I didn't stick around in the K-pop GAF thread after posting my outrage about the video that reduces the women in the group to being mere orificies for the choosing.

The sexual objectification and preferential selection of Asian women is severely problematic and, in it's own way, an inherent form of racism

K-pop is king when it comes to feeding into this bullshit. Sorry, but it is. These girls got detained because the costumes they had probably made it look like they were in the sex trade.

I dont know who they are, this is the first time i've seen a pic of 'em.
Didnt know one of them was 16.

Even the 16 year old?

Not at all. But they all look very young. Do you not agree?

Edit: And one of them is 16 years old.

One is 16. The rest are 18-21.

From Wikipedia:

HyoJung (Choi Hyo Jung; Korean: 효정) - July 28, 1994 (age 21)
JinE (Shin Hye Jin; Korean: 진이) - January 22, 1995 (age 20)
Mimi (Kim Mi Hyun; Korean: 미미) - May 1, 1995 (age 20)
YooA (Yoo Yeon Joo/Yoo Si A; Korean: 유아) - September 17, 1995 (age 20)
SeungHee (Hyun Seung Hee; Korean: 승희) - January 25, 1996 (age 19)
JiHo (Kim Ji Ho; Korean: 지호) - April 4, 1997 (age 18)
Binnie (Bae Yu Bin; Korean: 비니) - September 9, 1997 (age 18)
Arin (Choi Ye Won; Korean: 아린) - June 18, 1999 (age 16)

So yeah, only one was even underage.

Not into girls, or anyone under 24 personally, but need to point out underage isn't 18 across the globe. Stop thinking America = The World.

I am honestly confused as to how you could read that post as anything but sarcasm/satire.

and in this situation it would kind of only matter if they were actually sex workers

I'm pretty sure there's not an age of consent for being a singer.

It was. AKB member to be exact.

Too far, really? From what I get from google search, it's a lot tamer than what american popstars wear. Look up what people like Arianne Grande or Katy Perry wear.

That doesn't explain the fact that nearly every K-pop girl group vid I've seen features the "dick riding, squat-and-bounce" move in the dance choreography.

You're forgetting this is a medium in which Hyuna and videos like "Bubble Pop" and "Ice Cream" exist. No, K-pop is a steady stream of this shit with one girl group after another; they can't pump these acts out fast enough. American pop music has me counting the number of racy female pop acts and their videos on two hands, annually. With K-pop we get dozens upon dozens of these videos a year.

I think the "American pop does it too" argument is weak and a tired cop out response from people who vehemently defend K-pop and rarely fault it for any shortcomings

I lived in Korea long enough to know how K-pop works, and how much more overt and blatant it's become in the past few years since I left.

Edit: At least with someone like Miley Cyrus, I know it's all on her, going all out, doing batshit crazy sexual things because she simply doesn't give a fuck. With K-pop, it's all being done at the behest of the corporate higher ups who own and manage these groups...some dirty, middle-aged, business savvy pervert in a suit telling them "more sexy! Yes! Now go get plastic surgery, come back, and make it more more sexy!!"

This is great. Good for airport security. Asian prostitution is a huge problem and human trafficking occurs into the US on a daily basis. The officials had a moral duty to do this and I'm glad they did.

There's no racism here.

They were detained for their protection.

You know I would think they would be smart enough to realize they were a band/singing group and not sex workers after going through their stuff.

You realize they're not actually sex workers right? This is actually a bad thing to accuse people of a crime they aren't actually doing.

Well yeah, talking more about the people above acting like 16 is a no go (It's far too young imo) but around the world in certain countries, even here in the UK, it's legal.

But you've made me think. Imagine if there was an age of consent for singers? Maybe Justin Beiber wouldn't be so huge .....

Detained in America, so for the purpose of this discussion American consent laws will be used.

????

Girl group A Pink recently confessed that they have not yet experienced their first kiss, so they think of their fans while dancing the key choreography moves for “Mr.Chu.”

http://www.soompi.com/2014/04/09/a-pink-says-they-havent-experienced-their-first-kiss-yet/

Bullshit.

The officials did their duty to ensure the girls weren't victims of human trafficking/sex slavery, then let them go on their way once they saw they were safe... Good on them.

Yall western dude have some monster like looking teens or what.

They are used to american tv where teen characters are portrayed by 25 year old actresses.

It always amuses me too look at the lyrics and they are singing about bubblegum and teddy bears but dropping it like it's hot .

Such a extreme dichotomy.

You were given several in-depth answers and invitations to debate but chose to drive by post.

You're obviously not very interested in facts since their costumes are as 'bold' as you see in that picture.

But you're doing a good job of slut shaming in the process.

All your favourite pure and innocent KPOP stars are going to amazing private exclusive parties where they get coked up and fuck all night.

lol no, they won't, because we're talking about remarks made in this thread from people who you have no idea live.

Age of consent is 16 where I live, and it speaks to the reaction of the custom officials if 16 is underage there, especially considering you actually have to have special paper work to perform underage in the US, just ask Bindi from dancing with the stars.

I don't get it, I mean, even if they were prostitutes, so what? You see someone you think is a prostitute and you just arrest them?

But this happened in America...

This has nothing to do with what I'm talking about tho. Some guy in this thread found them all cute, and for all you know he lives in a place where 16 is legal, and then loads of people jump on him saying underage. But where he is it isn't.

It's still creepy sure, but then I guess that's more them looking about 12.
