K-pop band Oh My Girl detained at Los Angeles airport on suspicion of prostitution

I don't get it, I mean, even if they were prostitutes, so what? You see someone you think is a prostitute and you just arrest them?
They weren't arrested, they were detained by custom officials, which is not uncommon for people entering the country if they suspect you are planning to violate your visa terms.

There is an ongoing effort by the UN to alleviate human trafficking.
A group of young ladies with no relatives present and on tourist visas arrives at airport customs. I imagine officers became concerned when they were told this was a music group but possessed tourist visas.. I'll bet if they had been told this was an educational group they would have been passed through.
Its better to make sure things are not illegal than to find out later these ladies were enslaved later in the sex trade.
I can see it taking 15 hours, finding some translators to interview the group.

The costumes they wear definitely take it too far. I don't doubt this was the primary issue.

Huh. All white two-piece outfits with zero cleavage and knee-length skirts. That's...not too scandalous. I think you probably should've saved this rant for a better group.

Wow...K-pop fans really, really scare me. I'm done engaging with K-pop GAF on any level. I know Asian fever when I see it.

You seem to have a pretty thoroughly-developed self-narrative on an entire genre of music and its fanbase, so I don't see why you would.

I know you're joking, but trust me, you haven't seen what I've seen. It's some crazy shit. I guess I shouldn't assume based on past experience, bit good lord have I seen some shit.

Oh I totally believe you on that. I've probably not seen shit as bad as you, but there's some real weird nonsense out there

"They're so cute I would engage in civil union with any of them" -> Call the guy a creep.

"They're all actually nimphomaniacs" -> Lets have a meaningful discussion about that.

Come on guys.

Some of you boys are doing the nice guy dance and getting exposed in this very topic.

You wish it were that simple. I like that some of you think you know the first thing about what I think/feel about this particular issue based on a couple of posts which give you no real context or insight into the real-world discussions I've had (you know, the ones that actually matter), or the opinions I've formed based on my own experiences in Korea (but like any of that matters to you, Peru. All that matters is that YOU lived in Korea. Fuck me for having some of my own perspective.)

You forget that I mentioned that I was once close with the EatYourKimichi crew who, as foreigners, are at the forefront of analyzing and digesting K-pop culture for the international fan base. The discussions I had with them about how this stuff gets made and the kind of people running the show was eye-opening, to say the least.

But I'll allow the K-pop pitchforks to try and peg me as "racist" or whatever. Peru says I wouldn't stand my ground for discussion when I pointed out a video that sexually objectifies the women by placing them in compromising positions that suggest they are orifices to be used.

Yes...because Peru just called me a fucking racist; him, and people like him in that thread, are unconscionably biased, hypocritical fuckwads who don't know the first thing about holding a level-headed discussion on issues like the sexual politics and objectification of women at play in the K-pop industry without jumping on their K-pop crusader horses in an attempt to lynch anyone who would dare bad mouth their precious girl groups.

Fuck that shit. That's why that thread was only worth a drive by post, and two of my shits.

Obviously women should be wearing long dresses and collars to cover up their risque necks.

What a great man he is, willing to speak for a whole country of women when they can't speak for themselves. Truly is the Nicest Guy™.

I don't know how you expect people to listen to you when you won't give them the time of day. Even if you assume they'll shut you down or go rabid, it's still unfair to those willing to actually listen. You came in the topic hot, not looking for discussion at all, and get mad when people call you out on it again and again? Like, how can you not see where people are coming from on this?

Let's say Peru is wrong and you are right. At this point, you've given less detail to an outsider like me, and therefore, guess who I'm going to trust? The person willing to have a discussion about the issue who isn't avoiding it with vitriol and assumptions.

Wrong Visas, language barrier, a bunch of young pretty women escorted by business men, stage outfits in your luggage.. That's pretty much a recipe for airport drama. Can't say i really blame the security team for this one. Better check it out first.

I said your generalizations were racist, I didn't call you anything. We've all probably done it in our lives, made thoughtless remarks about a group of people - own up to it. You should try to use arguments instead of playing the victim card. Your first words to us in the other thread were gross, simple insults. Then you refused to participate in serious debate, just left the posts. You assumed things about the demographic of the place which were wrong. And you still won't respond to any of my arguments.

It's like talking to a wall lol. I even mentioned earlier that Oh My Girl isn't even a sexy girl group and was ignored so...

Really now?

I take it on a case by case basis; not speaking for a whole country. But I'm glad you enjoy twisting my words to include that sentiment, as well.

It's like I need a very, very key and specific combination of words to get this precisely how you guys want it to be delivered: K-pop, for the most part, is an industry that goes to great lengths to sexually objectify women in their music videos. That is all I am saying.

How hard is that to absorb as anything but exactly what I said?

I'm not saying THE GROUP IS A SEXY GROUP. Quote me where I said that.

I agreed with someone when they questioned why the costumes being brought into LA would raise red flags...it's not because they were dressing like little miss muffet now, is it??

People in this thread acting like US Pop stars aren't exploited for the male gaze?

Was Britney ever detained for suspected prostitution? She's got some naughty AF outfits.

Unfortunately quite a significant part of the music and entertainment industry worldwide is guilty of this as well. We in the USA have this problem, its not unique to K-Pop.

Hell forget Britney and look for Arianne Grande's Love Me Harder video.

So yeah, only one was even underage.
I'm confused, 16 is legal.

Aaanyway...I'm on my phone and can't keep up enough just now to respond to every point. I actually would respond to Peru directly when I have a keyboard in front of me...but I'll cool my heels a little before I get banned or something.

I can't convey concisely what it is I want to say with my damn thumbs on my iPhone.

Britney never tried to sneak into another country under false pretenses though.

Lots of people singling out K-pop groups for admonishment though. Seems oddly myopic.

Here's the important takeaway from my arguments, and I'll only say this once...I have never and would never lambast the girls themselves in these groups/videos/etc.

My problem is the system itself and the corporate ownership and management of these groups, and the directorial choices being made in some of those videos. I think the K-pop industry is a little more shady in it's management and treatment of these girls.

The girls themselves are fine, even if they get paid very little for what they're doing (especially when compared to U.S. pop stars).

I suggest you read the link that I just posted before you continue posting. One of the "unconscionably biased, hypocritical fuckwads" typed up a great detailed response to your post in the KPop thread.

I believe he is referring to them using tourist visas instead of business visas.

Like every single article says all they had was tourist visas while they were scheduled to not only perform but have a photo session.

it said they might have been using a tourist visa when they were clearly working (coordinated costumes were probably a bit suspicious in that regard).
Ahh that part. I dunno I wouldn't consider something like that sneaking though. But I suppose different people could view that different ways.

Are you arguing semantics about my usage of sneak? Its literally what they did and why they were deported. Which sucks for them because now its going to be very hard for them to get back to the US even as regular tourists.

According to the statement that their publishing company (?) released, they weren't being paid for that performance... which is weird, but I guess they wouldn't need a proper working visa for a purely promotional appearance.

Edit: Oh, they were stopped by customs not immigration, so yeah, not a visa thing surely.

Typical K-pop, I mean what else is new? Can we finally make this shit illegal?

"Typical K-pop"? What is typical about this situation? The fact that their management can't get their stuff together and clear this up without letting the situation get to this point? Other K-pop artists have had some issues sometimes, but nothing like this.
