Kameo Renders & Concept art

i don't see nothing wrong with the art. it's nothing different than Mario or Crash Bandicoot, or those other games aimed mostly at kids.

btw, is this what's actually being played in the game?? it looks beautiful.

Comparing this style to Mario is an insult to Mario. And Crash Bandicoot's art style always pissed me off.

If anything, it seems reminicent of the Jak games to me. Thing is, the Jak games were a whole lot more appealing to the eyes than these.

i'm pretty sure some of them legitimately don't like it. but it's obvious that alot of them are just trolling another xbox thread. i'm new to this board, but that's how this board works, it could be annoying & amusing at the same time.

I was going to respond in a sarcastic manner, but I appreciate you making a serious attempt to answer.

You know as well as I do art is subjective... and subjectivity leads to like or dislike (or apathy in some cases). I can understand why people dislike this, laugh at it, whatever- personally, I think it looks pretty bad, too. You liking the style is the other end of the spectrum... and that's ok too, man. I don't think it's ridiculous for people to expect some kind of 'higher standards' (in their opinions).

I did not know this was a 'kids game' though. :)

Well for some reason (the reason being that MS marketing sucks I guess), the demo of the game is showing one of the least impressive level of the game, being Thorn's castle. When you are outside it's ok looking with lots of dragons in the sky, but as soon as you are inside you are basically seeing a Xbox game with more bump mapping and high res textures. STUPID MS, again.
Ho and that Toy Story comparison is a bad idea in here. You've been warned :D

I don't mind it since that's the start of the game. I wouldn't want the demo to reveal too much about the game.

me neither. what i thought was ridiculous was all the negativity. imo, at the very least this game looks average. so i just didn't see all the need for all the negativity. but like i said, that's my opinion. i respect whoever seriously doesn't like it. but the other ones who are just here to troll the thread are annoying.

I like the dragon...pretty indifferent on the game,definitely not going to be one of my 2 launch titles I snag...

Well they could have shown the second level of the game, or at least have included some videos of what we have already seen dozens of time. The castle in the second level with the throne room is much more beautiful than Thorn's castle, and showing at least of a few things from the big fights with thousands of characters on screen would certainly have helped people think that Xbox 360 is a true next gen system. But then, I don't work for MS' (or anyone else's) marketing.

i think it's a fair comparison.

there's already been alot of casual people comparing it to Toy Story. by "casual", i don't mean the fanboys/retards/annoying pricks on this board.

some people on this board's sole purpose is to annoy people or troll threads, so u can't take most of this board seriously.

so Kameo = playable version of Toy Story (btw, i'm not saying it looks as good as TS, but it damn near comes close) and that's impressive.

obviously there is a bit of nostalgia with regards to Bowser and the Mario universe, but the biggerst reason i would prefer Bowser's design, to say, that dragon posted on teh top of the page is that the dragon just looks silly. Its like they don't know what they want to do with it design-wise. The bumpmappign and skin doesn't look right on a cartoony dragon. They try (apparently) to make him look all intimidating with the breating fire but then give him goofy ass eyes and tiny little baby wings.
 
Since this is a topic about the art, people apoplexic that people are criticizing the art are morons total. The concept art is just not professional; it might be "good" in the same way that someone posting pics in a GAF/O-T "art" thread is good, but not in terms of professional product. I'd agree with folks saying that the interpretation into 3D flips the script and is a lot better (which maybe suggests that the necessity of having good concept art begs the question?). The comparisons to Mario art are weak IMO, even though I don't necessarily like that stuff either. Yes, they're both "cartoony," but that's where adequate comparisons end. Lets see the Kameo stuff refined for over a decade before we designate overall equivalency.

no, i don't have to wait 10 years to compare Kameo's art style to Mario's art style. matter of fact Kameo is better character design then Mario imo. And Mario didn't become a franchise because of artstyle. it was the gameplay, Shigeru Miyamoto, & the fact that people my age grew up with Mario on the Nintendo.

who's to say Kameo won't be a franchise 10 years from now smartass.

Please stop. Talk about not knowing what they want to do design-wise, "Should this dragon/turtle thingy have spikes? Hell let's throw some spikes on his back but let's not stop there, to get that really spiky look let's give him spike arm bands and wrist bands and a spike necklace." :lol These are cartoonish, fantasy videogames we're talking about here. Trying to analyze the design choices using real world metaphors is silly, or do you really want to get into a discussion on the logic of having hammer wielding italian plumbers with funny moustaches dressed in overalls.

Didn't realize the Bowser designed has undergone an intensive refinement. :) The facts are people's likes or dislikes of characters are defined by the quality of the game and how well it fleshes out those characters. I remember people ridiculing the jackals in Halo1 when the first screenshots came out but now they are some of the most liked characters in the game. The facts are that if people had no emotional attachment to Mario and Bowser and the game was being released this year by Rare, a company that's quite villified then we would be getting the similar bad art comments about a Rare produced Mario game.

i know they are simple cartoons. Thats why i would prefer simple cartoon design choices. That dragon just looks stupid.

I'd put those in the "bad art" category too, but as you said they grow on you (not art-wise IMO but "personality"-wise) in the game.

Oh please. Rare is villified for bad art because they produce bad art. Nintendo is villified for their kiddy stuff too, but point to their concept art which is just poor.

I guess I'm just not seeing the art advantage Nintendo has over Rare and no, going from 8-bit to 32-bit is not a character refinement. The character has the same basic design just espressed with higher tech.
