For those people that like Tlop and Yeezus, did you grow up listening to hip-hop as your main genre of music?

This may com off as elitist bullshit and it may be but I can't imagine growing up with hip-hop and having such high praise for the 2 albums. It might just be my age.

I also know that since I didn't grow up with rock as my main genre and folks ask me "How in the hell do I like Creed? I understand. Then people put me on to stuff they think is better yet in the same vain and I listen and we build.

Grew up listening to my daddy play Big Daddy Kane, Wu-Tang, Eric B & Rakim, Biggie, Slick Rick, ATCQ, DMX, Busta Rhymes, and 50 on his speakers. Yeezus is one of my favorite hip-hop albums of the 2010s. On Sight, Black Skinhead, Blood on the Leaves, New Slaves, I'm In It, Hold My Liquor, and Bound 2 are all certified bops. Sorry if you can't keep up with the game in 2017.

I hate TLOP but YEEZUS is one of my fave Kanye albums. I've been listening to hip-hop since I've been into music (since around age 14… I'm 27 now for reference). My first album was Outkast - Stankonia, I've studied the classics and dig deep into the underground.
Yeezus was a breath of fresh air after MBDTF. I love my some experimental ish, and while YEEZUS isn't really "experimental" I love that a mainstream artists was willing to make a not mainstream album and employ a lot of soundscapes that were already popular in underground music.

Also I'm a huge fan of Rick Rubin in general. Haven't heard a hip-hop album with his touch that I haven't liked.

I grew up with hip hop as my main genre and love both albums. I like all types of music, though, so I'm ok with it when Kanye does these more experimental, non-traditional sounding albums.

I only listen to Hip-Hop and love both too.

Kanye is a trash human being, i hope that jay punches holes in his blown up ego AND takes his Bread. Anything to humble that POS.

Why does it take a single Kanye mention for an entire thread to be derailed into ranking his albums? And this is a thread about him too I should've known better smh.

Any thread mentioning Kanye is a chance to prove everyone else that their opinions on Kanye are wrong

Now this could be a court case I'd like to watch live, please.

Why does it take a single Kanye mention for an entire thread to be derailed into ranking his albums? And this is a thread about him too I should've known better smh.

Because he's a highly controversial person and people would rather talk about their opinions of him rather than the actual situation because one requires forming new thoughts through reading and thinking critically and the other is easy because the feelings are there and ready to go.

But I mean, that's most people these days.

That said, I gotta mention that while I can agree TLoP is a good album...

Anyone calling it a classic is out their fucking mind though, please pass me some of that shit right now.

I listened to music, period but more rock music

I didn't get heavy into Kanye until I began listening to more rap and hip hop though so...

Jay is a ruthless business man; but Kanye proved himself a flake. Cancelling a tour, likely costing loads of his fans a shit ton of money (since huge portions of tickets are bought from scalping sites that won't refund you.) Not sure why either would get the benefit of the doubt. Who knows who is to blame?

yup. i'm old as fuck and was listening to hiphop in the 80s. still love it as much as i did back then. itd be fucking boring if the genre didnt change it up every so often. tlop is great. yeezus is even better.

Like everyone guessed, this is about the rant.
Jay Z's attack against Kanye West on 4:44 has nothing to do with Kanye bailing from Tidal ... it's all about Kanye's concert rant ... and Jay clearly does not think Kanye's mental condition at the time was an excuse. Sources connected to the 2 moguls tell us Jay was enraged when Kanye went on stage November 19th in Sacramento and first went after Beyonce with thoughts that were difficult to understand and then calling out Jay for shutting him out of his life.

As one Kanye source put it, "Kanye was days away from going to a psych ward with some really serious mental issues. We get why he [Jay] was upset, but give Kanye a break." We're told Kanye had no idea Jay would go after him on 4:44 and when he heard it he was "shocked."

Turbo Graphx 16 bound to be a classic.

Yeezus has like 2 or 3 good tracks...come on, lets be honest.
On Sight.
Blood on the Leaves.
Bound 2.
Hold My Liquor.
Send It Up.
Guilt Trip.
Black Skinhead.
New Slaves.

The only two "okay" songs are I Am A God and I'm In It, but even they fit well with the atmosphere and the pace of the album.

I'm curious:

- those that don't like Yeezus- do you dislike the production too?
- those that do: do you care for the lyrics?

I'm torn re: Yeezus. The beats are fire but the lyrics are completely unbearable.
It's a mess in general. Not to mention it's unbearably loud at times. And stans will defend that, saying it's some kind of amazing industrial-esque approach for Kanye, which is lame as hell. It's poor engineering on an album.

As bad as the lyrics are, his lyricism got worse on TLOP, so I won't criticize Yeezus too much in that regard. That's why TLOP is bottom of the barrel.

Tidal owes Ye for keeping it a float as far as I'm concerned.

Hopefully this works best for all involved

Fwiw post 808s Ye has been so interesting sonically I can't go back to his old stuff. TLOP felt like it was happening as I heard it, wild experience. Can't wait to see what's next.

Also holy moly just saw that post asking if fans of tlop or yeezus liked hip hop prior - well yes. My entire life from the 90s till now, which had me growing bored of the genre over time. Stuff like tlop and yeezus were a breathe of fresh air that kept me interested. Similarly I think post okc Radiohead is far more interesting and it's hard for me to listen to that era of rock without getting bored. In the vein of boring hip hop I haven't enjoyed Jay Z since the black album unless he was doing something with Ye. Still haven't heard 4:44

Creating tension between Kanye and Jay is some good marketing moves. Played right and you have a steady stream of on going media awareness and spot lighting for a good couple months...

This is weird since they've even shown to be in contact with each other since the rant. Even have pictures of Kim and Ye going to their house.

Let me be clear, I do indeed like non-traditional hiphop albums (Mainly The Love Below) so I'm not trying to sell my idea of hiphop being the standard. I just thought those albums are just trash to me and I wanted to see where people were coming from.

MBDTF also has poor engineering, but the loudness does suit Yeezus's style.

I'm not sure why everyone is bagging on TLOP's lyrics though. There's 20 tracks and people are losing their shit over that dumb asshole bleach line.

The Love Below barely qualifies as a hip-hop. There's like 5 rap verses in the entire album.

Not really sure where I fall. Hip hop has been in the background for my whole life. My family would play it. But I've only actually listened to it and developed my own hip hop taste since 2012.

I hate Yeezus and TLOP.

I don't think it suits either album, honestly. It's just poor on both. MBDTF doesn't get a pass from me on that, even though I prefer its material. TLOP had the same problem. It gets to the point where it seems purposeful because it's on every release, but it just makes them sound terrible. If it's a choice, it's the wrong one.

And Kanye has always had awful lyrics on every album. But TLOP is a whole other level of bad. It's not just the one line.

??? What happened this week that has anything to do with Tidal?

New Jay Z album dropped, is really good, getting him and Tidal lots of attention.

Kanye isn't getting any attention at the moment and is, as usual, being a gigantic tit about it. Dude just needs to go the fuck away.

I was legit embarrassed the first time I listened to TLOP in the company of other people.

Kodiak

Not an asshole.
Kanye hasn't put out a good album since MBDTF. A few good tracks here and there, but Yeezus, Watch the Throne, and Pablo were half baked and don't hold up like his older work. Dude descended into madness after his mom died.

Dude bought into his own manufactured hype. Stans gonna keep him alive with meme magic cause "omg he named his new album after the TurboGrafx!"

Jay z's album is good, but TLOP...it was something else. Pretty much everyone I knew was willing to download tidal to listen to it. I honestly think Kanye is more valuable to Tidal than Jay Z and it sucks Kanye probably didn't realize that when he signed the contract

This shit is legit sad to me. I love both, and loved WTT. Their WTT concert at the Staples was amazing. They played Niggas in Paris like 10 times in a row. Shit was fire.

I have about 6 weeks left of my Tidal subscription from that Sprint promotion. Hopefully they don't pull his music or anything.

I've never watched a music video on the service, for the record.

Considering Kanye's been making mountains of of molehills, and using every percieved slight against him to attack other people, and all the Trump shit he was doing, and the fact that he showed up late to his own shows, did 90 minutes rants, performed two songs, then left - TWICE AT TWO SEPARATE SHOWS...

I'm gonna side with Jay on this one. Kanye prolly trippin' off the jab Jay threw at him.

The issue between Kanye and Tidal started before 4:44 released, so no.
