With the arrival of 2025, various Japanese game creators have been sharing notable statements via the Japanese outlet 4Gamer to hype up fans or temper expectations.

One standout statement comes from Kazutaka Kodaka from Too Kyo Games, saying that if the upcoming The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy doesn’t sell, the team is prepared to go bankrupt and retire.

Kodaka’s High-Stakes Statement

In his statement, Kazutaka Kodaka, creator of Danganronpa, revealed just how crucial The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is to Too Kyo Games:
The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy will be released on April 24, 2025. We’ve created it using all of our company’s assets and loans, as it’s Too Kyo Games’ first original intellectual property. If it doesn’t sell, we’re prepared to go bankrupt and retire, but we’ve put everything into making something worthwhile, so please look forward to it!

While it’s unclear if Kodaka is exaggerating for dramatic effect, it’s evident that high expectations are riding on this title.

Uchikoshi Teases More Titles

Kotaro Uchikoshi, known for the Zero Escape series, also hyped fans by confirming that:
Other Too Kyo-related games [in addition to The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy] will be released one after another in 2025. Please be sure to check them out!

Thanks to Gematsu for the translated lines.

That is scary. I wonder what their measurement of success is. Danganronpa and Zero Escape have cult followings but I didn't get the impression Rain Code did well? I'll support them for sure but I don't expect it to be a mega hit or anything, I barely remembered it was announced

As someone that plays Japanese games, I've never heard of this game before. Bad sign already?
I've made the announcement thread when it was revealed during the June Nintendo Direct, but since then, there hasn't been much news about this game, so it's easy to miss even for regular GAF users like yourself.

No, they always had a very odd strategy and marketing, plus games for a very narrow audience. They made Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE and they first made it exclusive to the Switch, they was betting that the Switch is very popular in Japan and this will help sales. The sales start was pretty good, they eventually managed to sell 55,000+ copies in Japan until sales stalled, then eventually they started to try the game on other platforms but the moment had already passed and they eventually sold - "By the end of July, the game had sold over 300,000 copies worldwide." And now they have problems.

It might turn out to be a decent tactical adventure game since they partnered with Media Vision on this one. Still, quite a dumb decision to risk it all on an IP with a niche target audience.

If that's the case then why aren't they releasing it on the ps4/ps5 as well as on gamepass? It's a switch console exclusive from what i gather which limits their audience. Also the game looks like a danganronpa knock off with the character designs and overall vibe from the trailer which isn't a bad thing, but i need to see more from this game before i'm interested in it personally.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Like a lot of others, I've never heard of it... which is concerning, because I am 100% the target market for something like this.

Assuming it's a single-player game which... it looks like it is? If it's GaaS or whatever, then forget it.

I admire the ballsy move, but that just doesn't seem like a smart decision. He's like the guy at the poker table going all in with pocket queen/nine off suit going for a straight.

I'm actually looking forward to this because of it being the danganronpa creator, should do some more marketing though if he's going all-in like this.

Can't say I've liked Uchikoshi's recent works so him being on it as co-director/co-scenario writer is already tainting my opinion pretty strongly. I know I'm not the only one, and considering there was only like a dozen of us that even knew about this game that's a big RIP for Too Kyo Games.

It's better to go out in a blaze of glory making the game you want to make than toiling away on mobile games for the rest your days.

I'm there day one but I can see why so many missed out on the announcement. It happened during a bunch of other trailers, and is an already niche genre within an obscure art style choice and storytelling that won't be for everybody. That said I like their work and the artist's, hope this does well for them.
