The Last of Us Season 3 'Planned for 2027' and Could Be the Series' End, HBO Boss Says

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

The series is definitely planned for 2027," Bloys told Variety, dodging the specific question of whether the show would return for the 2026-2027 TV season, or later.

"Craig [Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season," he continued. "It hasn't been decided yet, and I'm following Craig's lead on that."

HBO previously confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 will now feature Kaitlyn Dever as its main star, following the departure of Pedro Pascal's Joel and a waning focus on Bella Ramsey's Ellie. Would the change of lead actors — particularly from the series' hit first season — present something of a challenge?

I think they are just going to get it over with now. They probably planned 4 seasons but after the feedback from the last one. Its time to get it over with and move on.

Season 2 was awful

Season 2 was awful

Season 2 was good. Not as good as the first. But still good. The major issue for me with S2 was the fact that it was only 7 episodes and it didn't fill full enough. Hopefully this means Season 3 will be content complete to finish everything.

It was god awful, my Mrs even said put the next episode on and I said thats the season end. That last episode was tragically bad.

It;s just not a good show. Season 1 was fine. 2 was pants imo. Genuinely glad you enjoyed it though, but theres so much better TV out there.

Likely 3 seasons. They'll probably cram season 3 and 4 into one. No wonder Druckmann bailed.

Seems like once Joel got killed in Season 2, Ep 2, ratings dropped like a rock and never recovered. Similar to the game, once Joel got killed people turned on the series as Ellie isnt enough to carry the story.

Ignore the Season 1, Ep 5 ratings drop as that was Superbowl day. So dont fall for any spinning saying Season 2 wasnt bad compared to 1. Season 1 picked up steam a lot from episodes 6-9 and the overall ratings got heavily hit by a low rated episode same night as Superbowl. Season 2 first episode got off to a good start, but tanked after Joel died.

What people tried to do is avg out Season 1 ratings and then compare to Season 2 when it was running midway through the season. If you did that, the avg ratings would be very close as Season 1 started off slow as a new show and got bombed due to Superbowl day. And Season 2 had a .938 first episode and a few bad episodes at that moment so the avg didnt trend down with more .700 episodes.

I never finished the first season. I think I have one or two episodes left, but I've decided to stop as I heard the second season it's horrible.
I think you should watch the remaining episodes. Season 2 can be totally ignored as Season 1 leaves off at a natural point to be considered a conclusion in my opinion.

I enjoyed Season 1 and never watched a single episode of Season 2.

It will probably be a longer season:

"Craig [Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season"

A sequel game with god awful characters and baffling story choices that gets carried by top graphics and good gameplay don't translate well for a tv series that relies exclusively on this characters and storyline PLUS it has one of the worst casting imaginable.

Im shocked....

Okay, if you thought Season 1 was just fine.........................then there's nothing else to say.

They should do a time jump so we can see Bellie as a grandpa.

Yeah that was a TOTAL disaster of a scene. Literally made zero sense to write it that way. She could have just said mom or auntie and it'll be 100% fine.

Hey, would you mind explaining this.

Do they do a flash forward and call Ellie a grandad because she is a lesbian or something? Is it that woke? I'd love to know what exactly happened as far as woke or cringe.

To me it's more cringe than woke. But yeah.......it's kinda woke too lol.

It happens when Dina tells Ellie that she's pregnant. This is how it went down....

Dina (tearfully, holding a lantern): "I'm pregnant."
Ellie (shocked): "What?"
Dina (showing multiple pregnancy tests): "I found these in a pharmacy. I took a bunch of them in Seattle. I'm sure."
Ellie (processing, with a smile): "So we're pregnant… I'm gonna be a dad!"

It's the last line that's super cringe and 100% dumb.

season 2 was terrible... and I really liked the firs season.
And yeah, I liked the game. Soured on it recently but I initially liked it

I haven't even watched the second season and not planning to. Better to replay both games instead.

Ellie isnt enough to carry the story.
She's not the only one who carries the story and while playing the game, I never once thought that I should stop playing after Joel was killed or while I countinued playing it.

They have put themselves into a corner. If they keep the same scenario and writing quality as season 2, then the whole show will be worse-off.

If they learn lessons from season 2 and suddenly give Abby a much better quality season than Ellie's, then it will appear as if they were playing favorites...again, further damaging public perception of the I.P.

so, just like the games, basically?...

from the movie dragged across concrete:

  • Brett Ridgeman: Is that a guy or a girl singin' that song?
  • Anthony Lurasetti: Can't tell.
  • Brett Ridgeman: Not that there's much of a difference these days.
  • Anthony Lurasetti: I think that line was obliterated the day men started saying we're pregnant when their wives were.

Season 2 was predicable as ever but Neil Druckman didn't want to change course and Mazin obviously didn't do his research, nor HBO. And here is the result.

The franchise is done.

I hope they are doing TLOU3 now. To come out in 2030.
I would had thought they'd do LOU3 for launch on the last year of the gen (similar to PS3 LOU 2013 and PS4 LOU2 2020). Big budget game needs maxed out user base. Then they can release some kind of remaster/remake in the new gen to double dip sales.

But looks like Intergalactic is the main game in dev now unless LOU3 is secretly being worked on hard concurrently. I think they are to some degree now. 2030-ish seems pretty logical to me. Intergalactic is lets say a 2027 game, then 3 more years to go hard finishing off LOU3.

It would be weird if LOU3 came out way later than 2030 as the time gap between that and LOU2 would be getting closer to 15 years by then. It would be like release gaps between GTA5 and GTA6.

If only we had some sort of a barometer that could tell us how viewers would react and how much ratings would fall after a certain character was killed. If only this story was told in a different format that could've warned us.

Season 3 has potential, but Season 02 wasn't good.

The only excellent episode was the one that Neil directed, and Neil isn't working on Season 03, so who knows.

Tbh what was she gonna say? She's in a relationship with Dina, Dina is the mum and the natural extension to that is dad so she said I'm gonna be a dad, she grew up in world without the whole modern terminology of mum/mum, honestly the way you lot all made it out to be I was expecting it to be awful but it didn't come across like that to me, Ellie is simply thinking when two people have a kid they become mum & dad.

Still enjoyed S2, nowhere near as good as S1 but it definitely had some great scenes, I was on a second play through of the game and stopped at Day2 to blast through the season and man I gotta admit the game does everything better, the characters, the acting, the scene setups are all done leagues better in the game compared to the show

Season 2 was awful
Was it that bad? I only recently finished the second game and. based off the ending, decided not to bother with series 2 of the show.

Does anyone know if a third game is actually confirmed to be in the works? It would make sense; there's a few loose ends still to be tied up.

Everyone saw this coming.

They should have just rewritten the second season and fucked off the story from the second game.

Season 1 was alright, but I didn't even make it halfway through season 2 before I gave up

It's the 2nd half of the second game, which is the final game of the series, right?

What's surprising about this? Didn't Druckmann say that it's the end and probably the game too, a little while ago?

Dropped in the middle of season 2

The second game is not good, but the show somehow turned worse

The second game is easily as good as the first, I'm on Day3 and it consistently makes me stare in awe at the level design and graphics, the encounters, the acting and story beats are all absolutely top tier, I haven't switched over to team Abby yet like I ended up in my first play through, still team Ellie but from my recollection of the ending from my first play through they really need to give Ellie a redemption or at the very least closure so I'm hoping Druckman has got the inklings of a story for a 3rd game which they're no doubt in the earliest of design stages but ND/Druckman ain't gonna commit to a bog standard sequel unless it's something Big & Divisive and having Ellie simply make it to the fireflies and save the world just won't cut it for these guys
