The mayor of Lexington, Kentucky, says after the events in Charlottesville, Virginia, he is taking the steps to remove two Confederate-era statues from the lawn of a former courthouse.

Mayor Jim Gray tweeted Saturday he will ask the Lexington-Fayette County Urban County Council at its Tuesday work session to ask a state military commission for permission to take down the statues of John Hunt Morgan and John C. Breckinridge.

Gray tweeted he intended to make the announcement next week, but the "tragic events in Charlottesville" had accelerated his announcement.

Some good news in this complete shit show?

Fast, decisive, competent leadership? I forgot how that looked

Good continue the purge of all things Confederacy. The irony behind most of the Memorials is the leaders of the movement itself were opposed to them. Lee demanded no flags of the confederacy be flown or uniforms at his Funeral. He even spoke against monuments because they would create long term problems instead of letting the Confederacy die to history.

Yep, like I said in the Charlottesville thread, these idiot neo-Nazis are only going to hasten the removal of these confederate monuments thanks to their very public pilgrimages and "protests".

Let's accelerate this movement. Obliterate admiring relics of Confederates from all public spaces that aren't museums.

Removing these public monuments seems to be the first step in getting there, eventually.

Maybe these dickheads supporting these statues will finally have the opposite effect and more and more places say fuck this shit take them down.

About time. Absolutely vile that we have statues honoring white supremacist traitors. These pieces of shit aren't American in my eyes and should be vilified like the Nazis.

They should all come down, each and every one. They should have never been erected in the fucking first place. You treasonous god damn bastards.

Rename the schools, remove the shit from flags, all of it. I know it won't make it go away, I know that, but you don't get a fucking monument for committing treason and treating people like cattle.

Basically a real life version of the Striesand Effect

If this does start a movement, can a mayor allow a group of black folks with sledgehammers do the job to one statue? That would be wonderful.

I think we need to learn from the Ukrainians in their purge of Soviet Era statues. Just random groups of citizens going out and tearing that shit down

Seems like this was already in the works still good though. Maybe this can help get other statues taken down? Imagine if after WW2 statues of Goebbels or Rommel were in front of some court houses in Germany. Fuck anyone who is not ashamed enough to openly claim these people as their heritage.

They're being relocated, not destroyed.

Reminder that Kentucky was part of the UNION during the Civil War, but for some reason has a shitload of Confederate monuments.

And don't forget they didn't get around to ratifying the 13th amendment until 1976. Better late than never.

Take them to an empty field and do what our vets did in WWII

Yeah, probably. Wasn't the current trend against confederate flags and monuments in part sparked by the murder of black churchgoers by a white supremacist? I don't see how freaking Nazi rallies and terrorist attacks around Confederate statue removal will help turn public opinion back to thinking it's about "preserving southern heritage". The jig is up.
