Still, it's not yet clear who will buy the Keurig Kold, which is the size of a very large crockpot. Keurig says the suggested retail price for the machine is $369.99, but that prices could be as low as $299 depending on promotions. Each pod will cost between $1.12 and $1.25 and make an 8-ounce serving. That means it's not really a way to save money, since people can buy 2-liter bottles and 6-pack cans of soda for less, on a per-serving basis.

Instead, Keurig CEO Brian Kelley said Kold is a way for people to have a variety of drinks at their disposal, without having cans and bottles take up space in their homes. Among the other drinks the machine can make are "craft" sodas made by Keurig, and later this year, cocktail mixers.

"It's a premium — it's about choice and convenience," Kelley said.

With SodaStream, people fill a bottle with water and press down on a button to carbonate the liquid. They can add as much carbonation and flavoring as they want. A complaint among some users is that the carbonation comes from a CO2 canister, which needs to be replaced every several weeks or so, depending on how often it's used.

The Keurig Kold, by contrast, is more controlled. People fill the machine's water tank, then insert a pod to create a specific drink, such as Coke. The pods have two chambers — one with the carbonation, and one with the syrup or flavor. The machine makes the drink in about 90 seconds or less, chilling the water in the process.

Should Sodastream be worried?

Sodastream is for Amazon Prime customers and people who monitor quikbuyz.com.

This Keurig Kold is obviously for the next class up.

People who consider paying 200% more a convenience, and the fact that it's so ecologically unsustainable is just gravy.

Not for me. I have a regular Keurig because normally I only want a single cup of coffee quick and don't want to brew a pot.

Ooh, Kuerig Original finally did this

so we could relive the glory days of when your coffee machine could give you chicken soup. But with this we could have gazpacho!

Does this one have DRM like their coffee maker?

Even if it doesn't, what a stupid product. Soda stream was good cause it was compact, and all you needed is the can of CO2 and any type of flavoring.

What is the benefits to this product? I see no connivence over just getting canned soda?

It's made by Keurig?

In theory couldn't you just mix soda water with the Coke syrup? Or soda water with raspberry syrup = raspberry soda? Like an Italian soda. Is a machine necessary in this equation?

Will it automatically update my Facebook status to tell my poor friends how much I just paid for one glass of Coke so they can cry into their Diet Dr. Thunder?

If the machine and the pods were half the price, I would be all over it. Maybe I will get it when they are on a fire sale.

Why can't Coke make a miniature Freestyle for the house? I would pay $400+ for that.

I think it carbonates the water for you. But theoretically you should be able to mix soda water and coke syrup.

Things like this and Mio make me laugh sine it's a way for them to not spend money on water or the logistics of moving heavy product, but still reap a ton of cash.

The machine is really there just to carbonate the drink.

isn't it both cheaper and easier just to get a tank of co2 and a few caps to carbonate your own water?

I like my Soda Stream, but I typically do not buy any of the syrups. I use it for my Vodka Soda's. I just felt stupid after a while buying soda water, but I really don't know if I'm saving much with the Soda Stream. you get about 60L out of a canister which costs $24 with the trade in rebate, so $0.40/L. My gf makes some good ginger/lemongrass simple syrup, which I use occasionally. Again, I don't think $0.40 is a great deal, but I do like the convenience of not having to run out to the store to buy more club soda nor having a 2L bottle go flat on me the next day.

I think I paid $90 for the SS, and that came with a canister, so I don't see myself investing anymore than that in a new product unless it is somehow significantly better. I wonder how much the canisters are for this device.

Is it though? From what I understood the carbonation happens from a substance in the pods reacting to the water.

I am probably wrong but like this seems like the king of pointless inventions.

Keurig is going to make a bunch of money from people who buy stuff from Hammacher Schlemmer catalogs or whatever. Not so pointless.

I heard if you have a bose system, monster cables, and a keurig machine, at night they form a mecha that takes money directly from your wallet.

You can't prove Bose Triports don't emit a soundwave that lowers your inhibitions when it comes to conspicuous consumption.

Follow the money, you guys.

Basically no canister because it all happens within the Keurig pods, without the pods this thing doesnt work. So the Keurig Kold isn't really even a functional replacement or substitute for soda stream.

I was pricing Soda Streams a while ago and was amazed at the amount of offerings. You can get in the door for as low 75 bucks, lesser if you get those bed bath and beyond coupons.

Holy shit the pods are HUGE

Still don't have ANY idea who this is for. It's not cheaper than buying soda, and it isn't like brewing a can of soda was a huge task people hated doing.

Bonus: your coffee will taste like garbage chicken soup if you don't clean the everliving shit out of our Keurig.

So I need to buy an individual pod to make a cup of soda water, or does that make a bottle? Either way, the cost of a pod is more than the cost of filling a liter with a Soda Stream is my understanding, so there is no way I will buy one.

It only makes 8 ounce cups

Wow. There is no way anyone is buying this. I thought they would come in and undercut Sodastream on price and that would be that, but I'm not even sure how to interpret this strategy. "We see Sodastream is selling alright, but not really putting a dent in soda sales overall, so what if we made something less convenient, more expensive and with proprietary pods you need to use instead of being able to make your own simple syrups?" "I think you may be onto something Fred".

Sodastream just fucked themselves over anyways. They introduced a lot of new shitty flavors, reformulated others, and got rid of many popular ones. They also substantially reduced the amount of syrup in a bottle (42% less) but kept the price the same.

I signed up for e-mail notifications for this thing back when they announced it but it just makes no sense with announced prices. Nearly a $400 unit that makes drinks with a 400% markup over a 12 pack of cans? That's ridiculous.

Several weeks from a Sodastream canister? I get at least 2-3 months from mine making 0.5L a day (split between my wife and I). Are people really chugging that much pop? (I think I already know the answer to this).

I use my Sodastream for much the same purpose, as buying carbonated water is generally (cheapest) $1 for 2L and there's no way in hell I can drink all that before it goes flat. Smaller sizes are significantly more expensive per mL.

I think it's about $20 ($35 minus $15 deposit) for a replacement canister, which is reasonable. I either drink it plain, with a splash of flavouring, some sort of syrup (for an Italian soda), or occasionally their Coke Zero knockoff as it's halfway decent in a pinch.

Best of all, no dealing with returning cans or bottles for deposit.
