Kid Icarus Uprising |OT| On a Wing and a Prayer

but I'm curious as to what the consensus is on the controls for left-handed players.

I just got the game yesterday, and I'm still unsure what type of controls I'll use (or try to use) to play the game...

I have the circle pad pro, and so far I haven't found something really confortable, even with trying all the different settings. The circle pad pro is quite heavy and after one level I had to rest my hand on my knee to play.

The setting I use is : right circle pad for pit's movement (feels a bit awkward since I'm used to move characters with my left thumb in ALL games) + aiming with stylus in left hand (feels great and natural )

Without the circle pad, I didn't find another setting I could use without cringing. Surprisingly the least uncomfortable is the standard one (without cc pro) : move pit with left circle pad, and aim with stylus in right hand (terribly awkward but maybe manageable in the long run)

I have to find one of those thumb stylus, I have the feeling it would be better than holding the pen with my off-hand.

I really thought there would be a Resident evil revelations-like control setting in this game... it would be perfect.

Got my copy earlier today, i've just done the first 3 chapters and I have to say that i'm really enjoying this, great presentation, amusing banter, fast and frantic gameplay.

Now onto the ground controls, i'm going to say that if you're used to playing Metroid Prime Hunters or Monster Hunter on the PSP then you'll probably have little problems with them, that's not to say that they are entirely without problems but really I don't tend to have many issues thus far having dealt extensively with the previously mentioned handheld titles already having prepared me for stylus aiming combined with movement (MPH) and cumbersome camera controls (MH). The in game explanation mentions that the swift camera control is kind of like spinning a globe, it's a very appropriate comparison right down to stopping the spin when you reach your desired angle.
The dodge mechanic kind of reminds me of Metroid Other M without the more manic mashing of the d-pad. I guess it's worth noting that i've just left it on the default control scheme and haven't bothered to try any of the alternatives yet, I don't think i'll need to myself.

I did make the mistake of using a club and upping the intensity a bit for chapter 3, the lack of a a good projectile with the club was kind of a pain at times (especially during the boss), it's good to see though that changing the weapon type does make quite a difference though, I look forward to experimenting with more of them.

I will say though, after playing a few more hours this game really has some beautiful vistas.

Part of it is the style, but everything is just beautiful. The way the light reflects off the water, the solid framerate and massive bosses all just pop.

The 3D is also fantastic on this. As good as Resident Evil looked, I'd have to give Kid Icarus the grand prize for coming up with so many gorgeous and interesting to look at locations.

From the official Kid Icarus site for the UK:

Register your copy of #KidIcarus tomorrow and get 2 packs of 6 AR Cards in the #StarsCatalogue! Check the details: http://bit.ly/xBJUru

Sweet!

Can't actually find the details; wondering if it's *only* tomorrow or if it's over a period (starting *from* tomorrow)

Edit: Ah, wait. They're in the stars catalogue for the cost of the stars from the game, rather than for free with having registered a game? So I could pick them up with existing stars and cash in the games' later?

bought 12 packs. Damn

Same, that's 3000 points I won't see again.

This game is sooooo good. The ground controls take a bit of getting used to, but as soon as you do it becomes second nature, the visuals are the best on 3DS by far. Gorgeous

Best franchise reboot since Metroid Prime? I think so.

You know the cards don't really do that much, right?

I'm almost at 7000 points and I'd rather get the Mascot Statue over the cards (seeing as that great guy has scanned them all in anyway).

They bring sunshine and happiness.

I'm just jealous Nintendo Australia's store is shit.

Cleared the first chapter and had some fun with various features.
The game is GREAT. Quoting myself from twitter: "all those who complain about the controls must've never played that Metroid FPS for the DS :<"
It was way harder than ground fighting here.
Plus, the SSB vibe, I love it.

Fuck, I want to spend some star on those Cards, but I don't live in England/Irleand, so I can't purchase them, as Nintendo won't ship them to my country :(((

Oh man I am so glad to see that there are extensive records for the game. I love play logs.

Most stocked weapon, average intensity, matches played etc... So good!

STAT TRACKING!

Exactly as I thought. If you liked/adapted to Metroid Prime Hunters on the DS then you shouldn't have an issue with KI. And I really liked Metroid Prime Hunters!

I didn't like it and couldn't adapt in the end but it was my first DS game and DS was my first touch-based piece of hardware, so I guess I'm just better with it now.

Forgot to mention it in the previous post, but I'm a leftie.

I missed out on one :(.

And I don't really agree with the Hunters comparisons, unless you guys mean simply using one hand to control the character and the stylus to aim. If so then yeah, they're very similar. But the actual aiming/steering mechanic is completely different, and that is what I feel will throw most people off.

The people who didn't like the Metroid FPS on DS are the ones complaining in the first place... also, there are some complaining about the ground controls.

Got my copy, cleared the first two chapters.

As a left-handed player, I don't have any particular problem (using the stand). I feel like I'm fighting the camera a bit (my instinct is for a non-inverted control) but I'm not sure if you can flip it as I haven't checked yet. Game is fun, Japanese banter is amusing, Pit is a bit slow on the ground for my tastes but it's fine. Graphics look pretty polished. Feel like I haven't even scratched the surface yet, though.

From what I read, even people who complain about controls deeply enjoy the game. As a whole, Kid Icarus is a blast and I'm not sure anything that is wrong with it can throw people off. For instance you don't like ground sections: won't you still complete it at least once and play online? (not sure if I have your FC btw, I'm adding you tonight :)

You can flip it actually. You can also change the sensitivity (best way for me to describe it).

I do enjoy it though. Never said otherwise. I just think the exclusion of a bounding box, or option to have one, was very silly, and don't agree with the Hunters comparisons for this reason.

Also just spent over 2000 points in the Europe Stars Catalogue for cards. 108 cards on their way! That's just awesome. I guess I'll be nice and give duplicates to friends.. Or maybe trade on here, I guess.

I bought a thumb strap from here awhile ago. Unfortunately I lost it, along with my 3ds:(

I play without the stand using my small finger for the same role. Sure, it hurts a little bit, but I can put the console more comfortably.

Are you using the face buttons for moving?

Is Pit's movement analog or is it basically WASD mapped onto analog pad.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna cave and order this in a few minutes... Haha, it's ridiculous how many times I've flip flopped on this decision the past 48 hours. All the hype and buzz is getting the best of me.

How many save files does the game have? Please don't say only one.

Aaand order placed! Amazing that I still got Amazon's Free Release-Date delivery despite ordering so late (maybe because of Prime), and it immediately became "Shipping Soon".

The music from what I've heard in my small amount playtime so far is absolutely fantastic. Up there with Galaxy 1 & 2 as far as Nintendo soundtracks go.
