KLK - 01

ANIME IS SAVED. This show is fucking awesome.

It gives me all the right feelings, and I unabashedly love the stylistic choices in here. I have a major aesthetic/art-boner for this show something fierce. And the voice acting is great too. They really go all out and the characters feel like they really come to life. All the minor visual gags were incredible, there was a SHITLOAD of incidental information about how the uniform works, and all the promo footage we saw was only from the first episode.

GET HYPE.

TRIGGER GODS.

WE ARE NOT WORTHY.

This was a really god damn fun ride, I'm definitely on board. Loved everything except for the soundtrack - should have been by Iwasaki.

The first episode has pretty much established the whole storyline, right? Where does it go from there for 24 episodes?

Shit's going to get ridiculous.

Clothed, but I still really like her original outfit the most.

I doubt Satsuki is the real final villain.

Anyone else particularly love the backgrounds? I especially dug the art direction of the bustling town section moreso than the sparse school, though that was intentional, I think.

I knew going in from promotional photos & videos that I'd like it, but I was nevertheless impressed.

Yeah, they look good. Studio Pablo - the dudes who worked on Flower of Evil's background art, among others - is assisting as well.

For sure. Just swapping in his Gatchaman Crowds OST would be quite an improvement. :(

The original outfit is so much better in absolutely every regard.

I think if the theory that her battle outfit will get less revealing the more uniforms she defeats holds true, though, it might look neat if it winds up being a body-suit (I suppose as depicted) or something.

Colour me someone who'd much prefer Iwasaki over Sawano, as well. One can't help but feel that Iwasaki's experimental stylings would suit the show far more over Sawano's noisy orchestral thrums and guitar riffs.

I think some people are missing the point that uniforms and by extension uniformity are an important part of the concept of KLK. The show drives this point home in the first few minutes. What Ryuko wears resembles an uniform, but it's actually the exact opposite. Outside of a few design elements, there's absolutely nothing uniform about it. It's ridiculous, loud, impractical and completely unique - and I think that's exactly the point. Just a black uniform, or her initial, slightly customized school uniform, or any outfit that actually looks like it could be a real uniform, wouldn't have the same impact.

First episode felt extremely rushed (in pace) to me. With tons of expository and unnatural dialogue. I'll give the second episode a shot but this might not be for me.

The first episode was entertaining, as expected, but it didn't completely grab me yet.
Will definitely give it a few more episodes as this could easily turn out to be something really good.

And yet it's still completely pandering.

You have to be very careful with the "fighting uniformity with naked chaos" especially in this situation where WE'RE ASSUMING that the lack of shame and the embracing of nudity is the only weapon that can effectually tear down the tyranny of uniformity and order. If this goes full on Gurren Lagann and the cast is fighting against their version of anti-spirals, resulting in everyone wearing dumb outfits that have literally no purpose other than to titillate, this show is going to shoot itself in the foot.

In fashion, you can stand out against the norm without resorting to showing as much skin as possible. I want this show to understand that. Because if they don't, we're going to get the Gainax version of Senran Kagura, and that would the single biggest disappointment that I could possibly have for anime, as a genre, because it's an admission that even the greatest, most creative people have to resort to baseless extreme fanservice in order for their projects to exist.

Wow, that was pretty fucking ridiculous. Not a bad thing, and it's not like I didn't expect it, but it was still more than my expectation. Overall enjoyable though, I'll keep watching and hopefully they'll slow things down just a tad bit now that they've got a lot of exposition out of the way.

But holy shit, Mako's little brother running away was fucking gold. "Dumbass, I ain't got time for no compulsory education! No way, bitch!"

First episode was quite a ride, and I'm guessing it's giving us the main points worth giving a damn about. For maybe the first half.

And I'd argue it isn't, because it's too blatant. It's literally beyond sexy. The clothed alternative posted in this thread is a lot more sexy and what I'd actually consider pandering. It's a typical "sexy school uniform" outfit you'd expect from an ecchi show like Kämpfer. In fact, one of the characters in Kämpfer wears a very similar uniform.

You're saying that because it goes into the idea of the grotesque, it's no longer sexy, and that because the edit does leave more to the imagination, it's more sexy, and thus a bigger problem.

This is an interesting position to take, and i'm not saying you're wrong.

Honestly, we won't really know until we see more of the show and figure out where this whole thing is going. I just really hope they have a clear idea of where they want this series to end up, because if it's all the main characters in slings and nipple bikini's because "Nudity is the chaos that can cut through this order, like a pair of scissors" this show can only go so far because it will be doing more to sell things like this than tell the hotblooded story that we're looking for.

I really wanna like this show, but I don't have time for shit that's going to be fanservice for the sake of fanservice. We have porn for that, it's a lot more direct.

To be fair, this is pretty much the whole premise of Panty and Stocking, the director's last show.

Which I personally thought was pretty bad, but more because it was a comedy show that went for the easy joke instead of doing something more intelligent, ESPECIALLY because I was watching Bakemonogatari and Sayonara Zetsubo-Sensei, which are WAY more clever when it comes to sexual humor. Considering the crux of Panty and Stocking was sexual humor, it's okay to have characters be pandering here and there in the sake of the joke, as long as it stays funny. For me at least, it didn't, you can only make the virgin/cum/slut/pussy joke so many times before it gets tired. I got to the Transformers episode and bowed out.

Oh thank god someone else put into words my exact thoughts on Panty & Stocking.

That's exactly what I'm saying. You see, people don't really like sluts. They do like sexy, and maybe even slightly risque, but there's a limit. And ecchi shows are designed with that idea in mind - they try to make the characters sexy and desirable (unless it's Queen's Blade, and I actually like that show and respect it for its honesty), but to show more, they require excuses, like beach episodes or clothing damage.

Put me in the "not fond of the battle outfit" camp. Mainly because I really really like the MC otherwise, but I feel the outfit kinda undermines her lone avenger character type.

But I'll live.

I didn't mind the fan service to be honest, it was just in that fight and it wasn't even much of a thing. I like that uniform, clothed or not doesn't matter. just stop that fucking blushing.

Villainize me, but I like the current battle outfit because it led to her blushing throughout the whole fight while being completely bad-ass. It's a nice change from the usual battle-girl anime, where they're either completely comfortable with all contenders being half naked or cool with the g-string until it gets cut, at which point you hear the token 'iiiiiiii' of embarrassment.

I don't mind it. It kinda reminds me of Filia and Samson from Skullgirls for some reason, except Samson is her outfit and not her hair.

I might be weird, but the blushing, while totally understandable given the skimpy outfit forced on her, is also the one thing about it I would consider pandering. Because it's cute, and that kind of defeats the purpose.

Her outfit worked for the scene. I imagine it'll be changing like the theory suggest. At least we know it'll turn into an almost regular uniform going by the character designs and key visuals.

I assume it'll switch between the two forms.

I agree the suit will probably be changing as hinted by that strand of cloth being absorbed into it. GIGA SCISSOR FABRIC COMBINING!

I don't have any moral problems with the uniform, but it's a pretty shitty design. It fits into the overblown campiness of the rest of the show, but it's not pleasing to look at :/
I don't know exactly how they could have done the same concept with a better design, but I'm pretty sure they could.

In general the more mundane designs (Mako, her brother, her family) stick out in how tidy and clean they are compared to the student council guys who are so full of props it risks becoming overwhelming. Sushio's artstyle saves the show, but I dunno how it'll look when a lesser artist takes on animation directing.

Wow, that was fucking awesome. Very kinetic and hyper animation makes a welcome change from attack on titans slow pacing. I suspect this one will be a grower too.
