Tech aside, what Sony is doing this gen (as they did the previous one) is building new IPs. Last gen we got Ratchet, God of War, Jak, Singstar, SOCOM, Siren just to name a few. This gen we got Killzone (actually good one), Resistance, MotorStorm, Warhawk (not really new but you got the point), Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet. Plus the "new gen" versions of those last gen IPs (Jak excluded). So next gen they will have like dozens of exclusive IPs to work with. As for Microsoft, they have got Halo and Gears. What else?

Hope Jak is not excluded this gen. ND will surprise us :D

MS is working on getting the non-Sony PlayStation exclusives (GTA, FF, DMC, etc). They don't even have Gears locked, I'm pretty sure Epic owns the Gears IP. They have pretty much the same they had last gen... Halo

DEY GOTS HALO WARZZZZ

No seriously, Halo eclipses every single IP you've listed. The only Sony IP to match it is Gran Turismo. Come on, even 1UP had a dedicated special section for Halo 3 for more than 6 months on their site (on the navigation bar). That juggernaut is immense.

Simply timing Halo 4 with the next Xbox launch would do a lot for it.

Anyway, the strength of all those Sony IPs don't come anywhere near Microsoft IPs in terms of media support, exposure etc. Of course, Sony still have a few cards left (KZ2, Team ICO) but who knows...

Ah, I thought it was for Gears 2. Halo 3 is an interesting choice for that phrase, to say the least. H3 looked good, but not that good.

NOI!!! You simply don't have the SUBTLE EYES to see SUBTLE BEAUTIZZ!!

And if you're seeing things that they don't, it means you're a fanboiz yo.

Yeah, that's one thing I appreciate about Sony, is that they're always looking to new IPs and new ideas instead of more of the same. MS just seems to care about stealing all these franchise sequels of games that were popular on PS2.

MS are run by intelligent people. Sony's strategy works in the long-run, but you don't get to the long-run without doing aces in your short-runs as well. MS have deep pockets and can suffer billion dollar losses year after year with some but negligible pressure placed on their executives. Spending money to de-exclusify key titles (GTA, FF, DMC, etc) and garner exclusive content in others has done them A LOT of good.

Besides, they have strong first-party development teams; while not as remarkable as Sony are still very, very, very good.

Sony needs to have the balls to carry through CELL to the PS4 so the huge investments they made this generation, technologically and through their organizational structuring, will pay off. However, things aren't that simple with third parties whining about the CELL.. let's see how it plays out.

No exactly. MS is selling a lot now because they don't have to pay out to keep running Bungie, Bz Creations, Ensemble and can afford a PC, which will obviously vault sales. But I think in the long run, even if we say the PS3 and 360 are exactly equal in power, Sony could have a HUGE edge in a few years just because they are all working together. I mean does anyone know how many people are in all the 1st party dev teams for Sony? Could it be almost 1000 people working together and sharing? That's a powerful resource they have going there. MS just doesn't have that man power any more. I really thought for a while they were going to buy Bioware, but that never panned out. Since then, they've dropped Bungie, BC, Ensemble. Since 05, Sony has added the Motorstorm team, Zipper, GG.

It could be though that this will make sony bleed money even more. With so much invested in first party, some of these games need to start selling a good 4-5 million to recoup what they are investing in some many dev teams.

My guess? (And it's been hinted at). With MGS getting smaller, the recession hitting, MGS will focus more on quick to make casual games and try and take more of a page out of the Wii. You'll have some games like Gears 3 coming and Alan Wake, but a good 25% of the games will start to be more like 1 vs 100, Lips, Banjo Party games, and other low cost but fun games that they can whip out fast.

I've always thought the same thing, but I thought that was because I'm a PS3 fanboy. Although to be fair, MS does seem to try to broaden their audience, it's just they aren't very good at it.

Well, just about Halo itself. It was supposed to be a Mac game, but Bungie was bought out by Microsoft before that happened. It's somewhat of a spiritual successor to Marathon. At least the way I see it.

Edit: Don't get me wrong. Halo probably would not be at the media level its at today if not for that, but I'm just kind of following on to what Kagari said.

Well, depends on how you look at it I guess. Halo appeals to Halo fans/FPS fans. Sony IPs do reach a much broader audience.

Didn't they just have a 2 game publishing contract for Gears? I wonder if they renewed it.

Killzone and Warhawk aren't new franchises. I don't think MS even owns Gears, just a publishing contract for the first two games similar to what they would have had with Mass Effect had EA not bought Bioware. So Gears 3 could potentially go anywhere although that's doubtful. Microsoft will likely pick up the publishing rights again.

Microsoft also has new ip's this gen like Alan Wake, Crackdown, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Viva Pinata, Kameo, Infinite Undiscovery, Too Human, Lips, etc. Halo Wars is another, though it's a new franchise on an existing ip. Sony has a much bigger first party so it's obvious they can create more new franchises than Microsoft. While I prefer Sony's approach in regards to first party development, MS has created a decent amount of new ip's on 360.

And yes, hopefully Jak & Daxter 2 sees a release for PS3 at some point. I wouldn't mind seeing Insomniac build another new franchise as their next game for PS3 as well.

Gears IP is not owned by MS and where the fuck is my Syphon Filter IV and SOCOM IV using the Killzone 2 engine :D

No reason to, Gears 3 would still sell like crack on 360 and at least 2 million on PS3.

Not sure what the deal is with them.

It was my understanding that MS owns the "Gears of War" title but the same universe under a new name was still ok for EPIC to work with.

No idea if thats right.

Syphon Filter IV using the Killzone 2 engine combined with the cover/animation system we saw from Eight Days.

Tasing enemies into screaming flames in HD.

I think what sony is doing is they realized they need to transfer out of this 3rd party reliant situation. Of course they would take a hit and they new that, but now that they have first party locked up it's much easier to invest in your own property, also you don't have to worry about spending money all the time to lock up certain titles. Next gen they'll be all set where Killzone, uncharted, resistance, etc. will have made a name for themselves.

Epic owns Gears of War. MS will have to shell out some nice cash and give Epic a nice deal for them not to bring Gears 3 to the PS3 or even try to port the first 2 games to the PS3 under a new publisher, as you said it would be easy cash for them. I'm pretty sure MS won't let that happen and will have some nice trucks full of money for CliffyB and Mark Rein.

Since when do we gamers have to worry about the budget or system selling power of a game??? They have nothing to do with how fun a game is. if you have a ps3, stop worrying about stupid things and just get ready to enjoy this awesome piece of art that is the KZ2.

ps3 fans don't care about the cost of this game. the cost argument usually arise from the opposing sides with comment like 'of course KZ looks good, look how much money it cost'

yeah... i know. but that is still a fucking stupid argument. who cares if they spend a ton of money or sacrificed virgins to make the game looks this insane. as far as the game is good, i don't give a shit.

Have we seen this weapon yet?

Probably not, since SP preview we all got is only the first 5 levels of the game (42% to be exact, as the in-game stats says).

It is probably available in later stages.

As for weapons, my favorite gun was Helgan SMG, used by HG special troopers in game. Sniper in the 2nd place, that baby just rocks. ISA rifle thirs, than HG rifle. LMG is far from being fun, but that's probably just me.
Flamethrower is also nice, but made more for fun, not for reilability.

I also do not dig any complaint WHATSOVER about the AI - it is challenging, feels good and I gives great overall feeling. If they improve it futher, I'd be just more satisfied than I'm now.

But overall feeling - it's goddamn fantastic. I do not know how many times I've got myself killed just by standing and looking around in real-time lightning changes.

And wait untill you see the smoke efects, it's unbelieavble what it does to atmosphere. Of course, no HUD is a must here.

Resistance in this Killzone engine would just be absolutely jaw droppingly astonishing.

But that's also because I think the Chimera, Chimeran architecture and the general art of Resistance to be utterly fantastic (as in: Subjectively, it clicks with my tastes).

I seriously hope it shoots out a lightning beam, Quake-style. Greatest hitscan weapon of all-time.
When the Helghast gets shot by lighting in that video it seems to consist of a branching beam that does multiple hits.

This is starting to become a meme here "such and such sony game would look great if it used the engine of/assets from such and such sony game".

I didn't mean to purvey this meme then.

I'm just a fan of Resistance 2's art and atmosphere and love the immersion and intensity of the Killzone 2 engine...

I didn't intend for it to sound annoying.

ah no, I wasn't attacking you for it or anything. Though I just wonder if people are taking the notion that the sony tent shares tech a little too far.

I've seen "uncharted should use the 8 days cover animation" one too many times.

After watching those video interviews at GT I'm really impressed with how they've still been improving the engine even in the final year of development. I can't wait to see how much further they can improve things for Killzone 3, if that releases on the PlayStation 3.

I'm trying to avoid lots of media for this, but can anyone confirm if they've shown off the Squad Cannon from the first game yet? I wonder if it will make an appearence at some point? Loved that weapon in the original game.

Neat, sort of resembles chain lighting out of Star Wars Force Unleashed. Just judging from that tiny clip of it, though, it looks like it might be one of those "god weapons" ala the BFG 9000 from Doom rather than something that can be used competitively (which may be why it's not in the early levels). It looks like it pretty much fried four Helghast in one shot.

Everyone gets shot at the same time (despite it looking like one in this pic).

That being said, the videos we published yesterday evening are nothing terribly new: you could see the exact same sequences on Gamersyde. ;)

Just in case someone needs all 4 links:

We might publish more videos in the future, focusing on very specific aspects of this preview build. However I'd first like to check with Sony if another prebuild is on its way to our office. :P
