Wow MGS4 has pretty water, didn't really notice it.

Basically that article is talking about the shaders in MGS4 and how different aspects of the game were tied to SPU usage with the CELL, etc.

I really want to play this game's single-player. The first had a great atmosphere with the totalitarian opposition, and they seem to do it better here with the propaganda and voice.

Although the MP looks good, I'm only interested in the SP.
You have no idea how wrong you are.

Can't stop looking into Meryl's eyes....

Article seems interesting. Wish I could read it. :(

Yeah, there's only like one stream of water in Act 2 and that's it for the game. There was another body of water in the same Act but you had to go a specific route.

There's water in act 3 too.

'MGS4 is exclusive software to PS3 because of the Cell processor'

'Most PS3 titles use the cell processor in an average way, MGS4 uses it to a great extent.'

'MGS4 is dependent on SPE usage'

'Killzone 2 uses deferred rendering...'

Oh yeah. Forgot about one. Do you come across the water every single time you trail the guy? Or is it only sometimes?

I don't think you get to that canal if you're playing the game on any difficulty below normal.

As others have said i really hope Guerrilla and Sony can use the Killzone2 engine on other games. Didnt someone mention eariler that these teams working on PS3 exclusive titles such as KZ2, Uncharted, God of War etc share a lot of ideas about technology, engines etc?

Yep they do. It's how the sony family do things. Naughty Dog even help 3rd parties I believe (as part of a sony thing, like microsoft sending help to devs to understand stuff).

It's pretty cool, too bad the extra disc was PS2 only and not a normal dvd or i'd watch it all the time lol doesn't work on my PS3 but KZ does luckly. Oh well. I also have the KZ beta demo disc :lol

I use to visit it. What happened to it? It was a white hot site in terms of KZ media etc, but the guys who ran it never seemed to be able to make up their minds or keep it stable. They kept starting it up, shutting it down, moving the URL until it just died out.

So I played the game yesterday at the London 'secret' event thingy, and visually it really is a cut above the rest. I remember the build up to gears of war 1, and I was slightly let down as to how the actual game looked compared to the pre release media. This on the other hand lives up to the hype. It really does look as good as you think it does. Also the cgi trailer they showed that appeared to be some kind of cut scene from the game was incredibely epic - I hope they use that format for most of the storytelling.

What i'm wondering is, will the technology that guerilla has developed to make this game look so good on the ps3 start appearing in other games? Is the technology transferable? Will Sony make these breakthroughs accessible to their other first-party developers?

Will third parties be able to copy guerillas techniques to make their own games look as good on the ps3?

going back to gears, one of the reasons I sold my 360 in favour of a ps3 a while back was because on a technical/production value level, gears of war appeared to be a one off. I just hope other games will eventually reach killzone 2's level on ps3

Well the main idea of the World wide studios is to share tech, so comming games will be using KZ2 tech... i dont know 3rd parties tough...

I think the gamespy interview was posted already but I'm not sure if this was quoted:

Gamespy said:
Jan Bart Van Beek: Our engine is built around a deferred renderer. The strength of such engines is that they are very good at lighting as it's much more efficient at dealing with a lot of lights while at the same time being much faster at lighting then traditional, so called "forward" renderers. Of course with any advantage there usually is a disadvantage as well, which in the case of deferred renderers is their limitations regarding transparent objects, so glass objects but also grass and leaves. To overcome that weakness Killzone 2 actually uses a second engine for rendering transparent objects and particles. The advantage of a deferred renderer is that shaders themselves are a lot cheaper to process, as all the expensive lighting calculations are taken out of them. This has allowed us to experiment a little more with some more advanced shader techniques.

As we were developing the game, the engine became more and more robust and mature. One of the main developments was that more processes that were initially handled by the main CPU were being moved to the SPUs. Physics, lighting set-up, particle set-up, animation and such are by now all running on the SPU, leaving the CPU to calculate the more tricky game systems that aren't easily made parallel. At some point we even found ways to start doing certain GPU calculation on the SPUs, so now a lot of our post-processing such as bloom, depth-of-field and motion blur are being rendered by the SPUs. This freed up performance from the GPU, which in turn allowed us to go even further with shader complexity and particle density.

I like especially the second bolded section.

PS: it's probably worth a re-post anyway.

Some games are already using Killzone 2 tech. Like Uncharted for example.

Not a chance.

Deferred rendering isn't anything new.
And MGS4 doesn't look that bad compared with Killzone 2 (with Konami being a third party, before the point is being missed).

I didn't say it was. I thought his question was whether Sony would allow 3rd party devs to build of KZ2's engine which doesn't have a shot in a hell of happening.

8 different passes is though. Halo had 2 I believe.

Yeah, but MGS4 also used the EDGE tools which comes from first parties.
Both are great games thats the only important thing.

Didn't get many snaps because they kept saying no photos. my phone is pretty bad for pictures anyway.. I think I left the flash off

I would assume that sony would not share the engine itself with third parties, but surely the nature of the techniques used will at least be known to some extent outside the company

The devs have kick ass names:
Senior Producer Steve Ter Heide, (Ter Heide is an awesome awesome surname)
Art Director Jan Bart Van Beek,(Jan Bart Van Beek is like a riddle.Totally awesome!)
and Eric Boltjes.

Guerrilla Games is on Holland ?

Sure, but it's a question of whether or not those other teams know how to implement those techniques. Hell, you're seeing games have difficulty running in at least 720p, games that struggle to run at 30fps, have poor AA ect. And yet none of those are an issue with KZ2.

So its true that you like her?
We got news about her being a nice lady and that the 'hollanders' (Holandeses) really like her.

yeah, i'm guessing having all these features run in the most efficient way is key.. and that's real hard i guess.. you'd have to build it yourself or get the totall package.. (still guessing though).
