The vast majority of the 1up "preview" is garbage.

As others mentioned, if you are going to complain about glitches then tell us. Or better yet, tell GG and give them the chance to evaluate if they are glitches and if so if they can fix them.

Helghasts' red eyes are iconic and are part of the gameplay. I guess the desert level with the flowers that look suspiciously like the soldier's red eyes was missed on those that played at 1up.

A lot of the criticisms apply just as equally to highly regarded shooters such as Gears 2 and COD4, yet for some reason KZ just gets shitted on.

I just don't get it.

Don't blame the "journalist" blame fucking GG for getting too close to the target render to criticize them for that! I mean seriously, how are they supposed to easily write it off as "falling short of the infamous 05 target render"? That's bullshit GG, just straight up bullshit.

That's the baggage that is Killzone.

It's sad, really.

I find it funny now the Helghast are an issue when they were not before. I've watched most of the play3-live videos from that french website and oh crap it looks so damn good, so good in fact you really have to nitpick to not even give it any praise.

It's just frustrating to see Killzone get so many complaints that also occur in all FPS genre games. Games that they gave high praise to and high review scores.

It just seems for some games they look harder to find faults. COD4 had a lot of problems they claimed KZ2 has in SP mode and I still enjoyed it.

And I guess it also implies "please, don't show it in your vids" right?

Yea I just get the feeling that 1up is not forgiving of killzone 2 as they are many other shooters. If killzone did not look as good as it does 1up would be commenting on how it does not hold up to the e3 video.

I ultimately feel sorry for GG, because killzone 2 has had so much negativity in the press and GG is trying everything they can to change that but places like 1up will probably never change their opinion. Most of the staff at 1up probably already judged the game from the E3 video and are unwilling to change.

The media's attitude is just a part of the long list of the things that are wrong with this generation.

That seems true and maybe it is me, but i thought i saw a flying drone in the game that does not have the helghast trade mark eyes.

Somehow 1-up could find the 'subtle beauty' in Halo 3, but all of a sudden, 'the eyes on the Helghast are SOOO distracting!' Sony must not be giving out enough gift-bags or jobs.

That's between Marketing and Journalists. I'm not sure, actually, that it's in the best interests of the paying public to either dwell on them or suppress any mention of them. Most previews list known problems simply as a 'so long as' near the end of the article, if I recall.

If your point was a subtle reference to the Gamersyde issue, I have to tell you that I don't know very much more than Blim has told us on here about it.

As regards complaints about the iconic appearance of the Helghast - it's kind of interesting, because I've always seen it as one of the biggest strengths of the first game. The Higs are hardly a stealthy enemy - except for the Scout who has a form of thermoptic camo anyway.

Fortunately, I managed to watch the 1st and just a bit of the last (boss) video before everything was taken down at Gamersyde. I'm not sure what was wrong in there, but maybe it was in the other videos.

There has been a definite sense of having backs to the walls working on Killzone 2. I remember reading the reaction to E305 and thinking that we weren't going to get away with anything at all when it came time to deliver. Personally I think the shock response to the E307 trailer and build was a pretty honest reaction. People had to post it right away, they came back from the event floored and there wasn't enough 'post processing' time for that reaction to fade before the articles had to be online.

We're all adults here, at the end of the day and when we read some of the reportage from sites we can compare it to what we see with our own eyes or our experience of the Beta and do the maths. I personally believe Sony is still paying for some of the arrogance it showed at the beginning of this generation. I suspect most Gaffers will make their own minds up.

Well put.

Truth be told, after I saw how amazingly put together the online component for KZ:L was (Rivals SOME new consoles games) and just how much went into the campaign in terms of expanding the world, it is quite evident Guerrilla genuinely cares about the game, the franchise and the direction of the universe they created.

The Killzone 2 beta only made me a believer that Guerrilla is no slack game studio. They have opened up many eyes and proclaimed themselves and their identity and place in the world of video games, and it is one hell of a proclamation.

If it's worth ANYTHING at all, you guys made a true believer out of me considering I had low faith after playing Killzone 1. It had strong points to it, but the gameplay was severely lacking.

the flying boss? it already looked on par with bosses in other games like gears etc. always room for improvement, though. GG obviously have high standards.

have you got any sense of how the development community is perceiving the game?

looks incredible...! Make a dune game with this engine!!!! Get on it next gorrilla!!!

Well, you see what's happening here. We don't let shit slide and speak up. Godspeed, GG.

Ugh 1up is flat out terrible. I do enjoy 1up Yours, but goddamn everything else they do is laughable. Keep Tina Sanchez FAR away from this game, as well as the asian dude with the George Lucas neck :/

I usually don't get bothered enough to post but DAMN 1up! Putting such thoughtless stuff out like that is seriously going to dent your credibility. In fact it probably already has as I know I'm starting to lose trust. Did not read too much into David Ellis' comments but this is obvious shitting on a game.

I have not played any Killzone 1 and I did not pay much attention to the media it received, so coming in with a clean slate like I have for Killzone 2 and listening to some of their criticisms just leaves me confused. Was Killzone 1 really such a big disaster which now means that ANY Killzone game is going to get shitted on this badly? I would not be surprised to find some of the stuff in that preview on a Halo/Gears fansite. Everyone has their favourites and I have no problem with that (self confessed Nintendo fanboy here) but it's their job to be objective. I just don't think I can trust anything else 1up has to say about this game. I'm not just looking for postive impressions either, for example, anything Shane has to say about this game would not be gospel since he admits he isn't exactly a seasoned FPS gamer. I just want some good, constructive, honest criticism please.

Some great videos, thanks for posting these! :) I took some snapshots from some of the videos as well. Killzone 2 looks amazing! I really like the detail in the first picture here where the blue light from the "vest" (or what it is?) actually reflects on that guy's face.

1up brainstorm for KZ2 preview:

But, but, but the graphics... oh shit their awesome...

Ha! The AI! Oh shit... its awesome too....

The gameplay! GOTCHA! Oh wait... It's the most realistic shooter out there...

ummm.... maybe we can like the game? NO! THAT WOULD BE WEAKNESS!

The Helghast! Thats it! They look boring. Ha! Not Perfect! Fuck Yeah. Its a lie but HEY its something new to dislike!

QFT. Good luck Guerrilla.

Btw, y'all should so some SERIOUS marketing. Maybe show an edited version of the Helghan trailer on tv? That would get people going... :O

Something aired during the Superbowl would be big, too. Sony, get on this!

Anyone here work at Gamestop? Just curious, but how many pre-orders does KZ2 have already?
I do, and I know there's at least one at my store. :D

I'll check the total next time I work, but our store's only ~six months old, so I'm probably the only one so far.

I'm pretty good at getting my co-workers to pre-order games I know they'd like, so I'm working on getting 1-2 to pre-order Killzone 2.

I wonder if there'd be complaints about the lack of enemy variety if you were playing as the Helghasts and the ISA were the enemies?

It's such a stupid complaint. Especially since they kept comparing KZ to Call of duty, where you fight generic middle eastern terrorist #2 and generic russian terrorist #6.

Wouldn't it be funny if they just used the 05 trailer as the TV spot? :lol

I figured they'd really reach their hardest to find something to rag on and run with, but even I'm impressed how limber they are. Seriously, pathetic. "Red standing out on black" is distracting, unlike Purple and teal alien creatures in other shooters right? Terrible. Obviously an all time low for 1up/EGM. If they were fair in criticisms, then so be it, but anyone other than the hive they cater to would obviously pick it up.

Only reason LBP got the raves it did from them was simply that the game was so one off it had nothing to compete with on other systems. Now a shooter with a bad stigma from the first comes along pushing bars/boundaries you better believe that they're going to tear at it.

For fucks sake, the MP alone would be worth an "A" alone.

personally I hope the Helghast win and your entire squad dies. Then is KZ3 we get to play the entire campaign as the Helghast. Everyone knows that the Helghast are the best characters in the KZ universe, ISA troops are boring :lol

Also the 1UP preview seemed pretty positive if you ask me. It really is funny seeing you guys throw a tantrum over the fact that some people don't like some parts of the game. Nobody in the preview said KZ2 was a bad game, some just personally don't like the aesthetics and the more realistic feel of the weapons. Reading some of the coments here it's as if 1UP came out and said 'KZ has shitty art, awful controls, bad AI, and is a technical mess' which they clearly didn't.
The 1UP Show section was also very positive if you ask me. Ellis said he didn't wanna stop playing and can't wait to get back to the game-what more so you guys want!

Chances are KZ2 is gonna polarize opinion when it gets released, but that doesn't necessarily mean critics are shitting on the game just for the sake of it. GG are trying something a little different when it comes to how the guns behave, and how you move, I think it sounds awesome but I can understand why some people are not going to like this more realistic feel.

Some of you really need to stop throwing tantrums over minor nitpicks and grow up a little-and when I'm telling you to grow up, you know something's up, because I'm pretty immature :lol

Never understood the constant cheerleading 1Up gets on these forums. I find them no better than IGN or GameSpot, which I dont hold very high either.

I don't think Guerrilla Games excels at making games "fun"

...

SolidSnakex said:

One guy doesn't like the more realistic feel. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I JUST SAID.
Not everyone is gonna find it 'fun.' Some people hate Gran Turismo, they hate realistic driving sims and find Burnout more 'fun.' That’s just the way it is people.
What he's saying is subjective. He's not saying KZ has terrible AI (which is objective) he's not saying KZ2 has poor frame rate, or shocking collision detection (again all things that can be measured objectively) he's saying he doesn't find the realistic style they're going for with the weapons/movement to be 'fun.'
On the flip side in the very same preview you ahve other editors saying they love the game!
WTF GAF? Stop crying over nothing :lol

For example, I don't like fighting the Covenant in Halo 3. I find the little grunts annoying and don't find the other enemies much better either. I hate the games aesthetic (pink swords, bright yellow armour etc.) I dislike the space lazer weapons that fire green shit, I find Master Chief boring. Everything there is subjective.
I wouldn't turn around and call Halo 3 a bad game because objectively it isn't. The AI is good, the frame rate solid, the graphics well realised, the story coherent, the levels well designed, the weapons mostly well balanced, the controls smooth etc. The game is not 'bad' I just don't enjoy it-see the difference?

I think their problem is that they don't prepare what they say, so they tend to say dumb shit most of the time. I can't really blame them.

fuck david ellis.

Hard to believe the newer build looks even better.

Just like it was hard to believe they lived up to the hype of the 05 trailer :P Since i don't remember where it was preview code is based on alpha code or something like that, I don't know even know what to think anymore but I'm sure we'll be even more blown away come release day :P

Having to work for each kill is great news to me, that's part of the reason that I love MGO. Between the FPS and TSP controls and options and items there are so many strategies and tactics to employ that each encounter is it's own little story. I LIKE that sort of time, I get bored with modern games that, to me, feel too simple, a la Burnout (I prefer Motorstorm 1 for its physics etc).

Maybe it was leveraged as a complaint, but whatever.

I also predict that Gaf will go from hating Ellis to worshiping him if his impressions continue to improve, I'm pretty sure you could make a XY graph out of it. :lol

Even moreso because they gave killzone liberation a fairly good review if I remember correctly.

They gave KZ:L a 5 and said this about the multiplayer mode that GG said they'd offer as DLC

Supposedly, through some miraculous update, there will be an online deathmatch option available. But seeing how well Liberation follows through on its promising premise, I wouldn't count on it

Uh oh. I just saw the KZ2 message on Gamersyde. I hope that everything will turn out OK.

I think it might have been showing the incomplete landing cutscene? Maybe the the T&C had a stipulation against showing whole levels? There could also be something else in there like "One of the guys who did the placeholder voice had a nervous breadown when everyone was ragging on the opening cutscene".

Whatever happened, it sounds like there's a little more to it than "You violated NDA".

SolidSnakex said:

That's the edited version. Mysteriously no one at 1UP could track who edited the review, after there was a huge dust up on gaf.

The original said something like this:

Supposedly, through some miraculous update, there will be an online deathmatch option available. But even if it arrives, it won't be enough to change the score.

But worse, my memory is a little hazy.
