I wonder why I haven't seen AI play dead in a shooter yet? How awsome would it be for you to be walking by a group of dead corpses only to be shot from behind by one playing dead.....

Or, you see a room full of your dead buddies, and one of them gets up and it's a helghast in disguise....how cool would that be?

I think it would be pretty cheap and not fun.

That coming from a guy who has absolutely no issue with people who camp. Most of the gaming community abhors campers... loaths them... to think they would react well to a game that lets you lay in wait for people to run by? Good luck selling that one.

You can play dead in UT3.

Dead Space has this.

I don't really play many twitch shooters... COD is probably as close as I get to something like UT or Quake. So I wouldn't know about that, or even be able to speculate on how it might work in gameplay.

A more methodically paced shooter I could see it being annoying... but Killzone has respawns, so maybe...

Killzone has Saboteurs already though; isn't that in the spirit of his suggestion?

EDIT: Oh wait... he's talking about single player.

It's called double standards... I wish someone would make a website and show the hypocrite remarks these gaming "journalist" make, it's almost laughable.
I think they do a good enough job ridiculing themselves at times.

I heard this somewhere in this topic.

It was confirmed they will let us hold instead of toggle for iron sights and crouch.
Awesome I'll probably have crouch toggle and the have the iron sights be held down.
yes I'm really used to cod4 controls

Speaking of this, I'm not in the beta but does anyone know if this can happen when a teammate tries to revive you? From what I've seen in the videos, the downed player seems to get up as soon as they're revived, which usually resulted in another death in the middle of a heavy firefight. I think it'd be more effective if you didn't rise to your feet until you actually input movement from your controller.

Oh and what is this bullshit?
After a short while, though, the cover system feels more like a gimmick than an engaging in-battle experience. I'm also really bothered by how crouching becomes a chore via the lack of a toggle-crouch option.
I thought on the 1up show that Tina girl said one of the coolest things from the game was the cover system and now she says it's a gimmick *rolls-eyes*

In addition builds sent out for review are the latest STABLE build, rather than the absolute bleeding edge latest code. So, the Preview build will have been the latest really very stable and well-tested build at the time that it was sent out.
Well better to give them stable code so they don't say "Well the game is great but right now we're not sure the frame rate will be stable" :lol
Good job GG. :D

Don't blame the "journalist" blame fucking GG for getting too close to the target render to criticize them for that! I mean seriously, how are they supposed to easily write it off as "falling short of the infamous 05 target render"? That's bullshit GG, just straight up bullshit.
Journalist? You mean game critics? :P

I find it ironic that most of the enemies on the videos behave really dumb, the player walks to them and they barely make any shots :( I hope that's because it's on easy or something.
I'm not sure which videos you've seen but the AI looks anything but dumb.

Maybe I'm just spoiled on uncharted's amazing AI, I couldn't just be in front of 3 enemies out of cover and survive to tell about it..........

Crouch toggle may be nice, but it is fun to just run and quickly duck then run again with only one button press as I don't then have to press another button if things get hairy (and a crouch during a fire fight may give you steadier aim, but it also greatly increases the odds of them getting a headshot).

I actually have the iron sights mapped to R3 for the beta and love having it as a toggle. If it wasn't a toggle then it would have to be on a shoulder button and my hands would get cramped. I crouch much less often than I use iron sights. For KZ2 I also find that iron-sights are more for longer shots so it is nice to just snap it on, then take your time without having to worry about holding a button down. When up close and personal iron-sights don't really bring too much more to the table.

With that said, I am glad that they are providing options as it seems that I am in the minority and a great many people prefer toggle-crouch and hold-iron-sights.

the problem is not the AI. the AI is pretty good. the enemies do a variety of things, taking cover, shooting at you or your teammates. i don't like the type of "AI" where the enemy always spot the player and shoot at you, no matter how well you are hidden undercover and how many teammates you have with you.

the problem now is that the player just take too many shots to die, which makes it look too easy.

you are the only thing they focus on in Uncharted becuse you are alone...with KZ2 you have a whole squad they are concerned with...

watch the bolt gun vid again please...

I thought i read somewhere there are 4 difficulty levels...i'm sure you will find the right difficulty for you.

Hmmm maybe I will try the default controls first. I do see what you mean by being able to duck faster with crouch held down instead of toggled.

To crouch really quick with it toggled you'd have to hit crouch twice, but with just holding it down real quick you could duck quicker.

The Helghast aren't scary? Are they expecting them to be monsters? Will they be pissed if they don't get to fight an 80ft tall SUPER HELGHAST?

:|

The ai looks fine, I don't know why everyone expects KZ2 to have some demon ai that has never been seen. From all the shooters I've played KZ2 is right there with them in terms of ai. But since its Killzone people act like its not up to par.

I just think it is funny that so much time in an already short preview is spent talking about character design. I mean-- really? I went through and sampled reviews of 3 other top shooters from 1up last year and not one spends more than a sentence mentioning character design (for the record, it is Bioshock). And this review gets two giant paragraphs? I mean this is the best thing you can come up with? Why don't you spend one of those paragraphs talking about those annoying glitches so we actually know what you're talking about?

I've always thought the Helghast design was one of the things that made them actually stand out from every other shooter. People want generic soldiers now so they can see the emotions on their faces? These complaints just seem really nitpicky or even weird...the cover system is "gimmicky"? In what way? What are you defining a "gimmick" as? Maybe we should have heard about this instead of hearing your treatise on character design.

Totally agree the weirdest part is when I watched the one up show yesterday(for the first time in a while) that girl Tina said the cover system was one of the coolest parts of the game, then she says it's gimmicky like the next day in a preview...?

I just don't get the media sometimes for this game. It seems at times they hint it's not enough like Call of Duty 4. And then on the other hand, they say it's not enough like the other high fantasy shooters like Halo.

Let Killzone be Killzone. Stop trying to classify it.. The media is doing a horrible job at classifying this game. They treat it like it has to be hyper realistic shooter, and then the next minute they act like this game should be about fighting 250 ft tall leviathans.
I don't think the media will ever be satisfied with this game. They just don't know what they want.

IF they change everything to be more like COD4, the media will call it a COD4 copy cat. It's like.. they are damned if they do, damned if they don't. It's really annoying. There are certainly some valid criticisms for this game, but at the same time, I just don't understand.

Not enough enemy variety? But COD4 basically gets a free pass.
Helghast seem lifeless because you can't see their face? But nobody says a word about any other popular shooter with enemies that don't have faces.

I'm just annoyed with this. It just seems like when they run out of valid criticisms, they begin to open up a whole bunch of new unfounded ones. I guess they have to control the hype.

Bioshock had probably just as much variety as killzone. You have big daddies, and a few different splicers.

Half life's2 main enemies weren't that special either. You had the zombie like enemies, a few creatures, and then a bunch of generic soldiers.

I haven't played Crysis or know much about the game, but I haven't exactly seen much enemy variation either. Same with Far Cry 2.

News flash for 1up! Four shallow opinions aren't as comprehensive or interesting as one in-depth opinion. Oh, and wtf are you thinking throwing Ellis on the MP beta impressions after only playing for a couple hours, and NOT using him in the new SP preview after playing through it four times!? :lol

Such a fucking joke...

how can you not love a really dark scene and the only thing you can see are red eyes dancing all over the place?? Talk about tension!

Also very likely in that build they're playing the 5th difficulty level. Extreme > Hard > Normal > Easy > "Journalist".

I do like how she said the cover system was cool in the 1up show, but then went to dog it in the preview, a-la Ellis and his miracle warming up from the 1up show to 1up yours, just flip-flopped. These people need to get their acts together.

Can't wait for them to hand out the review duty to the office cleaning staff.

They ALWAYS contradict themselves from 1 show to the next, I find it kind of endearing :)

but it doesn't make sense! why don't they all use super cloaking technology developed for multiplayer and hide!!!! oh, wait, we complained already that the game is too realistic and not gamey enough? why don't they have neon signs pointing at them from above!!!

Actually, didn't she just say that "one good thing" about the cover system was that the aiming reticule remains in the same place once you pop out of cover?

I think people are misinterpreting the 1up preview. First of all, chill out. It's a fact that most of us want Killzone 2 to be a great game. I'm pretty sure that the 1up staff isn't "out to get" the PS3 or its games. Sure, there's people on the staff that seem to play the 360 more, but in the end it doesn't matter.
The preview was pretty informative at all, but most importantly, it shows different perspectives. I don't know where scooter is coming from, I presume he represents the gamer who's played killzone already. It's known that Nick faps for COD4 and Halo 3, so he's representing those gamers. Tina...uh, I guess she covers gamers that like dynamic foes. Shane covers the people who don't always play shooters, but still appreciates the great ones.
From the beginning, Scooter's preview is positive. My only problem with his preview is that he didn't state what the "annoying glitches" were. No matter, it was generally positive and clearly hopeful. Continuing, Nick points out something important from the get-go: he says that the game is for those looking for a more realistic experience. From the games he plays (halo and cod4) this doesn't suit his fancy, but that doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate what the game is trying to do. The only person I don't feel like defending is Tina. I'm sure someone will understand where she's coming from...I don't though. W/e, let's move along. Shane's preview was great. He shows that KZ2 is a contender for a great FPS. Not much to say other than that.
Everyone just needs to read the preview and take it for what it's worth. Look for the perspective that suits your fancy and then listen to that. As for the segment on the 1up show, they did seem overly negative. They need to a.) talk more about the positives and less negatives and/or b.) edit it differently.

That's my 2 cents.

Didnt 1up give Gears of War 1 for the Xbox 360 (or maybe it was the PC version?) a grade of A eventhough there were several of stuff in the review that was kinda negative? Maybe the same thing will happend with Killzone 2? Hehe :P
