KILLZONE 2 - input lag now? if you want a reskinned COD4, go play WaW

I wanted the demo to keep on going. I ended up hitting restart from last checkpoint over and over just to respawn one helgst and all of the explosive tanks. I love blowing those things up. Use one bullet to make it jet around then bam. I bet you can make some creative kills with those things.

I just completed my 5th play through of the demo and was very impressed with the overall experience.

Here are my impressions:

Visuals:
The visuals are very cinematic and have more of a film like quality. This game actually has to be seen in motion to be truly appreciated... It's not just one thing that stands out it's a combination of layered visual effects that leave a striking impression. The blur effect is well done and gives the game a much more analog cinematic look. The explosions and particle effects are absolutely amazing; you really like creating chain reaction explosions because it has such a visceral feel. Also, the collision detection with other objects in the environment makes for some realistic reactions that are different every time. Plus, the enemy animations are very impressive too hit detection and explosions. It never get's old to cause a huge explosion and see the Helghast go flying across the screen. Once again I can't stress enough how the combination of these things together is what makes the experience so visually pleasing. I would imagine this is what was intended for the cell regarding physics, animations & particle effects.

Did you notice I have yet to mention the lighting... I hate to repeat what we already heard, but the game without a doubt has the best lighting seen in any game on any platform including PC period... The use of bloom and lens flare is seen often, but never with this level of realism. I can't believe some people are saying the color palette is too bland, because the lighting really helps give the screen some color pop...

I don't want to hype the visuals too much, because Killzone 2 is definitely not CG visuals and anyone expecting that is fucking delusional, but I can say it's the best total package seen on a console. I think some could still argue there are other games with better textures, but when you layer in all the visuals effects working in concert it provides something never seen on a console until today.

Sound:
I was impressed with the immersive sounds of war and the chatter of your comrades.
*Honestly there's not much in the demo.*
I'm really looking forward to enjoying the LPCM settings in the final release.

Gameplay:
I would agree with others that the game is not revolutionary regarding gameplay, but everything is really well done and takes the cinematic FPS style too the next level. Also, the cover system is really well done once you get use to the controls.
*I think they could have left this in the MP...*
I would say the most enjoyable aspect of gameplay is the interactivity of the environments to the combat and the enemy AI; this makes you actually enjoy playing a set piece again, because the outcome is always different.
I personally enjoyed shooting and did not have problems with the recoil or aiming sensitivity. I was able to hit enemies at a distant with good accuracy and shooting from the hip felt fair and not too difficult. Also, once you get use to locking the zoom feature it actually makes a lot of sense IMO.

I was very pleased with the demo and my impressions seemed to improve with each play through. I enjoyed the SP demo, but this really has me more hyped for the MP gameplay, because I can already see this is going to be an amazing MP experience.
*On my third play through the demo just clicked and I was officially Killzowned...*

WOW, I totally not enjoyed my first playtrough :lol , adjusted the controller to alternate 2 and once I got used to the weight/inertia it totally kicks ass!!!!!!

Hahaha...

There's an attract mode video from the main menu if you do nothing for a few minutes.

The video will spoil a boss though but it looks AWESOME in action on the screen.

Erm... there's no trickery. It's just true motion blur. Videos don't hide the trickery or flaws. You can look at screenshots and everything looks 100% natural.

If you want exaggerated motion blur, see Crysis:
incrysis_motionblur_dx10.jpg

Looks more like the tree and gun were being shot out of a cannon, rather than slowly tipping down or waving, doesn't it? It's also a buzzkill to notice static background objects being smeared. Also, look at the edge of the gun- a common flaw in most games' motion blur, which Killzone 2 doesn't suffer from because it doesn't rely on cheats. Most games' blur looks like a 2D picture smeared and badly photoshopped into the frame. Killzone 2's blur, on the other hand, takes no such shortcuts.

Cell processor, perhaps? I don't know how KZ2 does it. I can assure you that you are entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't make it true.

So does KZ2 look better than the screen of Crysis that you posted?

Just played the demo. I don't see the point of a cover system. What's wrong with crouching and strafing for cover? It just seems like something to put next to a bullet point. Other than that I thought it was good.
That got me thinking if it was necessary either... But part of the assist is that it's so simple to take and come out of cover. Press the stick to come out, let go of it to go right back to cover. Leaning left or right out of cover keeps the lower half of your body protected, which could be important to beat the game on the later levels/higher difficulty.

Btw the MP mode is a bit speedier. The sp definitely feels slower paced. And I'm glad the cover isn't in MP now. It's good but I wouldn't be using it and I feel I'm better off crouching and popping up from cover like I did in the beta.

There is a lot of cover to use as it was, and you're not bound RE style. Useful for SP where you're pushing forward but not so much on maps where things can be coming from any which way.

That picture isn't a good example of Crysis' graphics.

Goodman, and let it be known I love the default controls now.

I changed over to alt2. I like zoom on L1. Darn cod4 and R2. I don't melee much in the sp demo.

It's nice having the cover system for SP, since it makes it much easier to lean and peak (and shoot), and quickly get back into cover. The other alternative is to add lean option, which isn't helpful to the gamepad's limited number of buttons.

I will have to use alt 2 in mp, but for sp its default.

Love the cover system. Cover, push up, zoom in, headshot city. It's why the default controller system works best (it feels strange holding up + L1+L2 in alt.2).

WOW, this game looks awesome. Still have to get used to the controls. Oh and the AI is nuts, you can't just hide behind corners like other shooters. I peaked around a corner and here comes a damn enemy running and gunning right at me.

I didn't spend much time with the demo yet but the default control scheme seemed alright. The only thing that kind of bugged me was having iron sights set to R3.

Don't be a troll, he's comparing the 2 games use of motion blur.

Granted, I only saw HD videos so far but... KZ2's lighting engine is superb. Utterly superb.
Yes, I dare to say better than Crysis which lloks outstanding in many ways but the lighting athmosphere KZ2 creates is breathtaking.

Only spent 5 mins with the demo so far, stunning indeed. A question, what happen to shoot the cover and it will break feature? I've emptied a mag and it'sstill fucking solid, even granade still.

What kind of cover?

So is there a difference between pushing up and just letting go of crouch? I tried using the cover system the first time but I just played again and ignored it, for me it worked much better this time.

The awful controls were a real barrier for me - even with the Alt. 2 config - and I didn't think the combat was all that good - it felt a lot like Resistance 2 but with much better graphics.

I do like the fact the Helgast have robo-Cockney accents though ... I might just rent it for that reason alone.

Yeah I feel Crysis has the "We looked at a Caribbean vacation photos and tried to make the closest facsimile" Vs. Killzone 2's "We watched awesomely stylized Sci-Fi films and recreated that."

Great demo, for sure day one purchase.

Just one question so far, the assault rifle you start out with seems to have a grenade launcher on the bottom any way to use it? I can't seem to find secondary fire.

To all the people who don't like this demo, all I have to say is this:

wtf?

btw the graphics in this game are mindblowing. MINDBLOWING, I tell you. It's like the graphics are directed by Michael Bay but more awesome, with all the lighting effects and shit.

The Next Gen has officially begun.

game is as different as possible than R2, gameplay wise... so how the heck can it feel like R2? I think someone could teach an class on different approaches to the same genre taken by R2 and KZ2...

I'm so behind on demos, I JUST downloaded the RE5 demo yesterday. And its gonna be at least a few days before I get to this one. Good to hear its good though, good day.
