Guys, here's an online quicktime of the fight:

http://www.muchosucko.com/video-bareknucklebrawl.html

Biff, I know Kimbo is your boy and all, but you are really spinning a bit in this thread. He got beat. BAD. I'd go as far to say that Kimbo really doesn't seem to hold that much potential in the long term in this kind of fighting... Gannon was the first really tough guy he faced, no? Kimbo's entirely an early knockout guy.

No Tedd, Kimbo's not my boy. Neither is Gannon. I'll spin in an Igor V and Rocky M thread, but not this one :D To me, the interest in this fight was supposed to be technique vs aggression, when it was really nothing more then a slugfest. I'm just calling it how I see it. For a while now, Gannon has posted he would destroy Kimbo in a quick and brutal fashion, that he had been in the ring with better then him, and he would make short work of him. That a untrained fighter couldn't possibly hold his own against a trained. You see where I am going with this?

Kimbo lost. What I am saying is, for a long time Gannon went on and said this guy (Kimbo) was nothing, now look at him. He looks like the sloth from the goonies. He beat Kimbo down, but not so much by superior technique (which is what I thought this fight was about). He beat him down because he wanted it more, and probably even intimidated Kimbo. He's said he would KTFO Kimbo, and in allot of peoples minds (my own included) that meant he'd send Kimbo down and out witha brutal punch, not with Kimbo falling after 20 minutes and being hit with hits that resembled boxing less and school yard brawling more.

My point is, its not a great victory for a supposed 6 time GG champ and MMA super heavy. He should have walked through this guy.

All that being said, i agree with you. Kimbo probably looks allot worse then what we saw in the vid, I would be surprised if he's pissing blood, broken hand shots by Gannon or not.

I will say that if subs and ground, Kimbo would be finished pretty quickly. And yes, like I said before Kimbo doesn't hold a candle to decent boxers. I don't see the spin in that.

As far as Gannon laying in the best body shots...I really think they are overrated. If you watch the fight, Gannon breaks his hands pretty early on. You can tell because he's constantly adjusting them. Its hard to deliver KO blows with broken hands. He definitely hurt Kimbo, he may have even dropped him early on. But be honest...its because he's a tough 300 lb Irish guy who absolutely could not lose this fight or he'd be the joke of all his MMA buddies. That's what got him through the awful beatdown that Kimbo layed out, not superior technique.

Does Gannon remind anyone else of Paul Varelans? From his technique to his ability to take massive amounts of punishment, I thought I was was watching a Vale Tudo show from the 90's.

Yep. :D This was kinda like the fight between Varlens and the guy who yelled out "Sa!' with every punch. Muhc longer though.

But Gannon wasn't allowed to use most of his superior technique as an MMA fighter under the rules of the fight. Not really his fault that it was off limits in this bout.

The one part where I feel you are spinning this is in how you keep suggesting Kimbo was gassed and not truly KO'ed by Gannon. How many more 25+ second count outs do you need?

That's not just exhaustion--Kimbo can't get to his feet because his head is rattled. Look at him stagger around, get to his knees and struggle, unable to regain his equilibrium. Especially the second or third to last knockdown (I forget which, there were so many of them), it's from four or five straight shots to the face from Gannon and Kimbo falls back on his ass. Clear KO.

Btw, I believe Kimbo took plenty of damage in this fight, probably just as much or more as Gannon. He happens to be black, have thicker skin than Gannon, and also have a beard, so you can't see it as clearly. But check out those pics at the link posted early in this thread and you'll see a couple shots where his face is streaming with blood.

yeah, but Kimbo broke the rules too, since the one time when Gannon fell, Kimbo kept punching him on the ground.

In Gannon's defense, Kimbo initiated the illegal tactics. Once he shot for the single, what was Gannon supposed to do? Let him take him down?

The kness I don't have an excuse for, except it was late in the game and he must have beeb desperate or on instinct. When your gassed you do shit like that if you don't want to lose. I'll give him a pass for that since Kimbo attacked him while on the ground.

Just the fact that he is a supposed SIX times Golden Gloves champion should mean his hands are on a completely different level from Kimbos. Not only that, but he is a super heavy where Kimbo is a heavy. It shouldn't have even been a contest under any rules if you believed Gannon's hype.

The reason why I say Kimbo was gassed is because if you watch the fight, you see Gannon held Kimbo in two tight guillotines for a good portion of it, early on. That makes the fighter tired, nevermind Kimbo who has shitty cardio to begin with. Kimbo just looked gassed to me. When he fell, when he was putting his hands on his hips...he looked like a man who was more tired then hurt. Nevermind he didn't fall until around the 15 minute mark, which is a clear indicator that gas is a major issue.

Don't get me wrong, Kimbo got fucked up. Maybe a better vid will come aroun dand show just how hard Gannons punches were. Just see my previous to you why I'm not yelling out "kimbo got pwned!". Consider the circumstances.

i dont know much about MMA but to a regular guy the black dude got owned hard. Except for the one time he pushed the white guy into the wall he was basically missing his punches and getting hit hard.

The early part of the fight made it look a lot more like Gannon was the one who was afraid and tentative. Kimbo looked methodical and impenetrable, but after a minute or two where Gannon took more shots, most obviously the one that gave him the big welt on his head, he pretty much had control and put the tempo how he wanted it and took Kimbo down. I wish I had sound to know what was said when he had him in the hold. The argument Kimbo is gassed is fine, but Kimbo had many opportunities to recover with the stoppages. I will agree with Biff that it didn't look like superior technique won necessarily. I mean Gannon did dodge more shots and had a better landing %, but he didn't look to be sitting waiting and taking shots as he pleased. I don't blame him though because you can't chance a hard straight blow in bareknuckles as in boxing. In boxing you might shake it off in this situation that wouldn't be the case. Or so I would think. Most of gannons stuff is superficial though. A couple contusions and a few cuts, but I saw no structual damage whatsoever. The only think that looked broken was for sure one of his hands. His left if I remember correctly.

I expect to see some of you "newbies" in my next Pride thread, mmkay? ;P

I'm hoping that this, combined with the Dan Puder/Kurt Angle incident may have snagged some new fans.

While we're on the subject, have you guys heard about the recent proceedings regarding legalization of MMA in California?

Does pride have all that Gay hugging stuff...i get bored out of my mid when its all about submissions.

Depends on the match. Sometimes, the styles of two particular fighters leads to a stalemate in the grappling. There are definitely exciting ground fights though. See Sakuraba/Newton and either of the Nogueira/Herring fights for proof.

By the way, was your capitalization of the word "gay" a Freudian slip?

Nope, haven't really been following it beyond the headlines.

You should go read some of the more recent news on Sherdog. Supposedly, representatives from DSE and Zuffa both visited California in regards the rules. Zuffa wants a standardized rule set throughout the country (their rules) and DSE wants a more open policy. They're trying to use this as an bargaining chip for a possible Pride show in California at some point. Pretty interesting.

If DSE could somehow schedule the finals of a new MW GP during the days surrounding e3 when I will be in LA anyway, it would be pretty ace. Like that will ever happen...

From what I understand, California is really receptive to the idea of using a new set of rules (one that would, at the least, allow knees to the head). Which I'm all for. It's the soccer kicks and stomps that make me a little uncomfortable.

I suspect Zuffa is just posturing to try to keep DSE from running California -- they've already petitioned to amend the unified rules to allow knees to the head, anyway. Ultimately, I can't see Zuffa sitting out California when the majority of their Vegas fanbase drives out from Cali anyway.

Just one clarification, this fight only lasted ten minutes. Kimbo actually first fell around 7 minutes in, not 15.

So, anyone here browse the mma.tv Underground forum? does anyone think that there's an eerie similarity between the relationship between GAF and Opa Ages, and the Underground and the Fightsport forum?

One is the respectable forum, while the other is a cesspool of hate and bitterness where anything goes. And the cesspool seems to be preoccupied with what happens at the respectable forum. Anybody else agree with the comparison?

thanks for your support guys.i was very impressed with kimbo. i boxed at a very elite amateur level and i had good, competitive fights with national champions (US and Russian) as well as US Olympian Jason Estrada. i went into that fight thinking "if i can hang with those guys, what are the odds someone guy off the street will be able box with me" i was surprised to discover that kimbo is legitimatley only a notch below a national champion level boxer. he really is that good. before the ignorant start piping in, you're talking to someone who KNOWS. i'm no armchair strategist, i've actually fought these guys, and i'm telling you kimbo is at that level. unless you've fought national champions, and fought kimbo, u have no basis for knowledge. the only thing giving me an edge was my MA skills. and his streetfighting skills were great too!

hi everybody, i'm just got back from the hospital, was reading the threads, am touched by the support i've gotten from so many people.

would like to clarify a few points - i don't like being accused of being a cheater, especially by people who don't have a clue what the rules actually were. we originally wanted a no rules match, but kimbos people demanded special rules to protect their fighter. we wrote a (very) short list of rules and both parties signed off on it prior to the fight. they asked for no groundwork and this was agreed to. we never agreed to no submissions, and we can't be held responsible if his team was so ignorant of our sport that they didn't realize you could do submissions standing. same with knees. they asked for no kicks and we agreed. kicks were clearly defined as "striking with any part of the shin or foot". knee strikes were completely legal. i followed the rules to the letter, but kimbos team violated them repeatedly.

the rules were signed by both parties prior to fight time. our team was completely aware of the rules, and all the chaos stemmed from a lack of real fight experience on his team. it was like when tyson had his buddies work his corner in the buster douglas fight, and they didn't even bring an endswell. kimbo is tremendous competitior and deserved better.

i don't know if his medical insurance is as good as mine, and i wrote to iceberg about setting up a fund to help him if he needs it. if he isn't hurt, he still deserves some bread for being such a warrior and having a tremendous heart. anyone who was entertained by the fight should kick him a little something, he earned it.

and again, thank you for your support.

he is very dangerous right now. people have questioned my boxing credentails, but the fact is i've won the gloves 6 times in a row, all open class, never novice. for those that say i came from a "soft area", my region actually had the toughest super-heavyweight division in the country, producing 2 out of 3 of our last olympians (clay-bey and estada), and a very good national champion in between. i also beat the new york champion while winning the Northeast Regional Championship in Lake Placid in '99. people have always that i didn't look good and could never beat so and so, but i never listened, and kept on beating people that were supposed to beat me. i have a classic southpaw "spoiler" style that doesn't look impressive, but the proof is in the pudding...i've won championship after chammpionship. i've fought national champions (US and Russian) and an olympian (estrada), and had competitive fights. i thought that there is no way a guy like kimbo is going to be as good as me. i was wrong, the guy had great boxing skills, he was every bit as good as the national champions i had fought. b4 people get there panties in a bunch, i'm not an armchair strategist, i'm speaking from direct experience, having fought these men, he was that good.

another note for people who don't know boxing, when a fighter uses body punches to weaken an opponent, it's called effective stategy, not kimbo just "gassing out". and the winner of the fight is the guy with his hand in the air, not the guy lying on the ground. i beat him once, with all the rules stacked in his favor, and would gladly fight him again by MY rules (no rules).

At least he can still form sentences post-head dent. :D

Gracious winner, if I do say so. Seems like he was as impressed with Kimbo as we were.

The head dent thing isn't actually a dent. It was a bump convex not concave, caused by a broken blood vessel in his head.
And yeah, Gannon is a really gracious guy.

Another thing posted was that the standing Guillotine was legal, as well as the knees, in the fight rules drafted by Kimbo. Kimbo shooting on Gannon was legal as well.

Missed this thread back in november, but I just caught the video off MMAtracker. Eh, wasn't impressed by this fight, and seeing how much play this got on GAF compared to proper MMA matches is very telling.
