In the Kindle book reader or a 3rd party app?

That's never happened with mine.

I should have been a bit more clear.

Not when reading the book, just when browsing the storefront and clicked on a book e.g. "A Stolen Life" then when it loads the details for that book it will show the top part (book image, title) and then do a reload again to show the full info (book image, title, price, description, reviews, etc)

I recently got a nook tablet with a root card that allows androids apps, and I love it. the MicroSD card is a big bonus on transferring movies to it. the sound sucks tho, I had to invest in a Ihm60 speaker which is awesome. I want to see what kindle's next version is like, if they allowed sd cards I might go for it.

Is it a good idea to buy a kindle fire with the intention of using it as a tablet? I already have a kindle, I just want to use android apps

Bought this the other day and liking it so far for the price. It's the perfect size for me.

My only issue is PDF's. I'm assuming there is no way to simply save pdf's on the device itself. The only option I have seems to be moving them from my computer to the device.

Also, is there no way to charge from my computer and use it?

You should be able to email yourself docs through your kindle.com address. Look it up. Fairly sure you can't charge and use except on AC power.

Thanks, I didn't realize you needed a Send to Kindle app.

Amazon's directions are so confusing for me.

I'm going to wait and see what the specs are. For what I use my Kindle Fire for, mainly comic reading and couch surfing, an improved screen resolution will be my deciding factor.

Just a comment on durability. I had a freak accident on a stairwell on the way home the other day and my Kindle Fire fell between the railing and the stairs, crashing onto the stone floor a half-flight down. That was probably a good two meters or so. I only have a Marware Shell as a case. (Here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005V2EVBQ/?tag=neogaf0e-20 )

The case now has a big scuff on the corner, where I think it took most of the force, but the Kindle Fire itself is in perfect condition AFAICT. Pretty impressed, but also quite glad that I bought the warranty just in case it hadn't come out so well...

Amazon Reportedly Readying Launch of 10-Inch, Quad-Core Kindle Fire

Apparently, Amazon isn’t just working on the Kindle Fire 2 — the retail giant is also finally getting close to releasing its long-rumored 10-inch, quad-core Kindle Fire, according to a report from BGR. Amazon is set to launch both of its tablets in the coming month, offering improved build quality and materials.

The news of Amazon’s reported tablets comes hand-in-hand with Google’s Nexus 7 tablet announcement at Google I/O on Wednesday. The Nexus 7 tablet, which focuses on entertainment consumption, takes direct aim at the current Kindle Fire. And the form factor similarities between the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire are impossible to ignore.

From Wednesday’s announcements, however, it’s clear that the Nexus 7 trumps Amazon’s original Kindle Fire in hardware specs and overall build. Google’s tablet sports the same $200 price tag, but features a 1280 x 800 pixel display, Nvidia’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor, a 12-core Nvidia GPU, and 1GB of RAM. It also has a front-facing camera, and supports Bluetooth and NFC, none of which appear on the current Fire.

But Amazon’s tablets won’t be behind for too long. The company is bringing more tablets, with better specs, to the compete in the market. The 10-inch Kindle Fire model is expected to be come with a quad-core chip, a microUSB port, a front-facing camera, and an HDMI-out port. The new Kindle Fire 2 model will reportedly come with a higher-quality metal casing, as opposed to the the plastic of today’s Fire tablets.

“It’s really up a notch from the current Fire,” sources told BGR.

While other internal specs are still unclear, it would not be surprising if Amazon launched both tablets to be very competitive in specs and price with Google’s Nexus 7. According to reports, the tablets will launch in late July.

At least three Kindle Fire 2 tablets, one with 4G, on the way

The Kindle Fire 2 will see the Google's Nexus 7 tablet and then raise it, according to an analyst.

Amazon will bring out at least three new Kindle Fire models, according to Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch.

Shim gets his information from sources in the "supply chain" -- a collection of companies that manufacture components and assemble products.

Here's what Shim is seeing:

  • 7-inch Kindle Fire 2: 1024x600 display, no camera; August production.
  • 7-inch Kindle Fire 2: 1280x800 display with camera; August production.
  • 7-inch Kindle Fire 2: 1280x800 display with camera and 4G; September production.
  • 8.9-inch Kindle Fire 2: With 1920x1200 display; Q4 production.
  • Shim believes that a 10-inch class Kindle Fire is unlikely. At least not any time soon.

What's the process of doing this?

Ive been using the stock Fire OS and want to switch to ICS. Any concerns or gotchas?
Just go to the Kindle Fire forum on xda-developers. I rooted and installed JellyBean on my girlfriend's Fire and it runs amazingly well. So much more versatile than the stock Fire OS...unless you use Amazon Prime video.

Sorry for the double post but I'm been having trouble with installing the Android SDK for a while, now.

I have Windows 7 64-Bit and it looks like the ADK has a longstanding issue with this platform.

Here is the version of Java that I have installed:
Code:
C:\>java -version
java version "1.7.0_05"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_05-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.1-b03, mixed mode)
I have downloaded both the .ZIP and .EXE ADK installs and have tried both without any success. The installer gives me this piece of shit message:
6M7rL.png

*raises middle finger at screen*

I've tried a couple of recommended solutions including adding the JAVA_HOME variable, hitting the back button and then the next button (this works for some people), adding the JDK to PATH, installing the 32-bit version of the SDK, and then I gave up on the installer.

After undoing all of the damage that I did above I then moved on to the .ZIP install, extracted it to my root directory. According to the internauts this method works all the time. I try to run the AVD or SDK Manager programs and get a quick DOS window pop up that disappears after around 10 milliseconds. I try running android.bat from the tools directory and get another shit eating message stating that I need to have the JDK installed:
Code:
C:\android-sdk-windows>tools\android.bat update sdk --no-ui
Failed to convert path to a short DOS path: C:\Windows\system32\java.exe

ERROR: No suitable Java found. In order to properly use the Android Developer
Tools, you need a suitable version of Java JDK installed on your system.
We recommend that you install the JDK version of JavaSE, available here:
  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads

You can find the complete Android SDK requirements here:
  http://developer.android.com/sdk/requirements.html

C:\android-sdk-windows>java -version
java version "1.7.0_05"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_05-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.1-b03, mixed mode)
Fucking hell. I'm about to give up.

Might be worth a new thread? Just ahead of a 6 September announcement...

In just 9 months, Kindle Fire captures 22% of U.S. tablet sales

10 of the top 10 best-selling items on Amazon since Kindle Fire launched are Kindle devices and content

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(NASDAQ:AMZN)—Less than one year ago, Amazon introduced Kindle Fire—combining 15 years of innovation into a single, fully-integrated, end-to-end service for customers. Kindle Fire quickly became the most successful product launch in the history of Amazon.com, earning over 10,000 5-star customer reviews, and is the #1 best-selling product across the millions of items available on Amazon since its introduction 48 weeks ago. Today, Amazon announced that Kindle Fire is sold out, and that in just nine months, Kindle Fire has captured 22% of tablet sales in the U.S.

“We’re grateful to the millions of customers who have made Kindle Fire the most successful product launch in the history of Amazon,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “This has been a big year for digital products on Amazon—all of the top 10 sellers on Amazon.com since Kindle Fire launched just less than a year ago are digital products. Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead—we will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability, and the best content ecosystem.”

Kindle Fire offers customers a vast selection of digital content—over 22 million movies, TV shows, apps, games, books, magazines and more—in one seamless, end-to-end experience, making it easy for customers to browse, discover and purchase. Since Kindle Fire launched last September, all of the top 10 products on Amazon—across all products—are digital products.

I'm getting ready to drop this JB rom on my OG Fire.

http://rootkindlefire.com/kindle-fire-roms/cm10-jelly-bean-rom-for-rooted-kindle-fire/

Anyone else using this?

I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

I'd recommend also using the new Kindle Fire HD OT, as I have a feeling my old thread here will not be in use much longer. Looks cool though, let me know how it turns out, I may load this up on my wife's Kindle Fire.

BTW, your avatar always brings a smile to my face!

So i don't know what my nephew did to his kindle fire. It flashes between green and orange. Boot screen also seems to be on an infinite loop. Please helps. Can this be fixed? Or should we start saving up for some other gift? lol

Okay GAF I'm about to click "Order" on a Kindle Fire though I have a few questions before I regret shelling out 159€ for nothing as it will be the first ever tablet I will use and own:

First of all if I order this Kindle Fire here ultra long Amazon link can I install MIUI on it as written here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877529

I'm not new to this kind of things as I CFW'ed Wii's and Vitas and PSPs and iPhones and whatnot before so I don't worry about technical complications it's just that I don't want to get the wrong model :p Amazon didn't release new Kindle Fire's that plugs up that exploit or whatever is used here right?

Second, will the Kindle Fire do these things well? I don't plan to do anything extremely tasking with it, my mother just wants to read eBooks while I want to watch anime on it, mess around with Android and MIUI, maybe play some SNES, GBA and PSX games just for the heck of it and maybe check out the one or other 2D game on the Google Play Store.

And lastly, is it possible to revert it to the stock Amazon Android OS once I messed with it? That's my biggest gripe about all Android-based devices... should something go wrong you need big luck to find whatever Stock-ROM you came from :/

Thanks in advance for answers! :)

Well I just noticed that the one listed there is the Fire 2 which is incompatible with all ROMs, seems like I never will get a cheap Android tablet :(

Have been very tempted to buy a Kindle Fire HD for me and the missus recently. Haven't caved in yet as I think I want to get a Surface Pro before anything else, but it's definitely on the radar.

I've also been looking at the site I administer's tablet traffic over the last few days. Seems a LOT of people got Kindle Fire HDs and Nexus 7s for Christmas. Both saw a fairly large jump at the expense of the iPad on my site.

between the Kindle Fire HD 7" and Nexus 7 i'd go with the Nexus if you plan to game on it. Either way the Nexus would be the better choice to tbh unless you want the amazon experience. The amazon appstore doesn't have a huge selection of apps and nexus 7 can get the features of the kindle minus the whole amazon freetime for kids.
