Right, so I am considering one of these now, as I decided the only reason I wanted an iPad was as an e-reader for books, magazines and comics (I have an iPhone for all other iOS goodness).

How is the Fire for that task? Books of course but is it big enough for comics? are their magazines on the store?

Also how is the Amazon digital store for the UK? I ask as I know it can be better / worse region by region.

While Kindle Fire's smaller screen is nice for travel the larger iPad screen is far better for comics and magazines. Fire's display size and low resolution makes it a rather below average magazine & comic reader. Not to mention the retina display is far superior to the rather average display on Kindle Fire, and that comes across very signfiicantly for magazines, comics, & text.

If you want to just read books I'd say get a e-ink kindle. If you want to read magazines & comics iPad is the way to go.

Don't get the Fire then. It is a great device but worthless outside in the sun.

I have an iPad and a fire , I read all my comics on the fire. For the price the fire is a great device. I read wired on mine all the time and it's ok for that. Books and comics its great

Is it $300 better?

How many books/magazines/comics could be purchased for that extra $300.

Install ComiCat on the Kindle Fire and have a nice day. Magazine's are also fine on the Fire.

Obviously, if money isn't a concern...hell, get the Retina display iPad cause it's technically a more powerful device, but only the poster knows what he/she considers "value".

This is pretty much the thought I have, that the iPad might be better sure but that argument sets a pretty steep precedent when budget is an issue (which it always is).

The Fire isn't out in the UK yet so I will have to give it some thought.

This is a the one question that has kept from from buying an iPad. That damned price, man.

A refurb 16GB iPad 2 from Apple--which is basically brand new--is $350. Unless you need the smaller size/weight or prime integration, it's pretty much better in almost every regard compared to the Fire.

If you intend to use it for reading comics & magazines? Yes. If you want it as a simple tablet for internet browsing, videos, & games its a solid device. But I have one and the iPad 3 and text is almost completely unreadable on it going from its rather weak display to the retina of a iPad 3.

If you want to read text get a e-ink kindle. If you want to read comics/magazines there really isn't anything that can compared to the iPad 3 till Amazon and other Android tablets match the retina resolution.

If a iPad 3 is too pricey the iPad 2 would be your next best bet even without the retina. Refub iPad 2's aren't much more than Kindle Fire's and their larger displays are far better for Magazines and Comics that tend to struggle on the 7 inch sort of tablets.

Kindle Fire does a lot of good things but reading comics and magazines is not one of them.

The best way to compare them is iPad is to a high-end laptop as the Kindle Fire is to a netbook.

Of course it's better. It's still not cheaper and the Kindle handles the functions people want just fine.

I'm just waiting for the upgrade but IPad will never be purchased primarily due to price (unless the wife makes me)

EDIT: I have 3 employees who read mags and books (no comics) on the thing and you will definitely and easily survive the experience. The screen looks great.

Well, if price is a major concern that is a different story. But based on his post where he was considering iPad as an option as well that doesn't seem to be the case. If someone can affford the iPad I don't think a single person would reccomend a Kindle Fire over it, not even Jeff Bezos.

I can comfortably hold the kindle fire in one hand for several hours due to the 7" form factor and weight. That alone makes it a great tablet for reading on the plane (I travel fairly often), during my lunch break, or while in bed.

I would probably agree with this except for ones who avoid it for ethical reasons or something (Apple is a monopoly, evil, bat work environment, etc...)

I can afford an IPad, I just can't make the case that the price is worth it despite its tech superiority. With a Fire, I can for what I want to do.

The Fire is also made in China.

Well the good news is my gf has been given a Fire at work (they publish mobile content) so I will get a chance to compare it with the iPad they have.

You make a good point about the iPad 2, didn't realise they were selling so cheap now.

I know.

They don't make the news though.

It's Walmart vs. Target or Nike vs. Addidas all over. The biggest guy is the one that gets the condemnation.

I'm not opposed to Apple for ethical reasons, I'm just a cheapskate.

Why even bring up the work enviroment aspect when they are both made at Foxconn? You were setting yourself up.

Also Amazon is striving to have a monopoloy over the ebook market so I have no idea where you get this idea that Amazon is the non-monopolistic non-evil guy here. Neither is worse/better than the other in business practices.

Context is key.

I was saying that if one can afford it and the IPad is better, a reason to avoid it would be for ethical reasons. The work environment one is critical for this because Apple is the one in the headlines for poor work conditions. People condemn one company for something while giving a pass to the other all the time. It was also part of a few other reasons given so not sure why that one has more weight. Time to letitgo.

I do disgaree with the monopoly & Amazon. Their business model will always be better than Apple's in terms of competition. I don't even understand how that is debateable. For a consumer, this doesn't matter too much as they get what they like even if it contributes to a closed system. Both companies are successful because of consumer demand for their products. They go about this success in different ways though. Amazon's is better imo unless you are solely an Apple user.

It's a good thing that Kindle is out there as a cheaper alternative because it offers an option away from IPad which needs no help whatsoever and it teaches IPad competitors that they may be thinking wrong if they try to match IPad feature for feature and price for price.

Having owned both the fire and an iPad, reading comics was 'ok' on the fire. On the iPad is a whole other level. Particularly on the retina iPad. I don't even need the zoom/guided view function anymore. Nothing has been closer to holding an actual full page comic IMO.

Having said that, price can definitely be an issue. Perhaps the iPad 2 would be a good option (if you have a Microcenter near you they've been selling them new for 350) though you may still need the zoom to read at that resolution, I don't know. The screen real estate would still make up for it.

On top of that, rumors are there will be an updated Fire this year. So unless you get it real cheap (like the refurb sale last month) I don't see the Fire as a good buy either way at the moment.

I'm waiting for the upgrade as I do see flaws and I'm in no particular rush for a tablet.

Hopefully there's no price increase to correspond with it.

Why do you complain about work environment from one part of your mouth and then go around saying you hope there is no price increase with an upgrade less than a year after launch?

By many accounts, Amazon sells Kindle Fires at a loss, and they can only do so with Chinese labor the WalMart way--trying to get Foxconn to accept cheaper contracts each round, or having them wring out more productivity from their workers.

I guess I've just grown accustomed to reading comics on my Fire. I never have any issues.

Would an iPad be a better solution? Absolutely. But I also knew going in that I was saving $300 at the time compared to the cost of an iPad 2.

OMG, I'm not complaining about work conditions lol.

I don't care about the work conditions one iota if people voluntarily apply for the jobs. Some people do (aka "ones". I am not "ones"). I honestly can't understand how a thread tied to reading generates so many responses where it's clear no one read.

Quick question, I just purchased ComiCat, and I attempted to build my catalog, but it didn't do anything.

All of my comics I purchased through comixology, am I missing a step here?

You said it might be a reason someone buys a Kindle Fire over an iPad. Yet that is impossible since Kindle Fires are made in the same factory.

Kindle Fire does a lot of good things but reading comics and magazines is not one of them.

Yeah, that is your best bet if price is a concern for magazines & comics.

Anyone that says the text for a comic or a magazine is unreadable compared to a Retina display iPad needs to rethink who is looking at purchasing the device. Someone who has NEITHER.

So...are you saying a person can't read comics or magazines on the Kindle Fire?

It's like saying you can't read the text on a 720p tv set because your 4k tv looks so much better.

Is a 10 inch device with a retina display a better device for reading comics and magazines? Yup.

If a person has neither and cost is an issue...You can read both Magazines and Comics on the Kindle Fire easily.

Example.

Using Comicat I have Avengers vs. Xmen Round one open on my Kindle Fire.

Yes, I have to scroll.

No...I can't see the paper fibers.

Yes...no problem at all reading single page spreads. Multi page stuff requires minimal work.

If having a camera, or bluetooth or integration with itunes is important to a person, then yes...regardless of price the iPad may be the more obvious option for you.

If the idea is to run apps, read books, read comics, watch tv shows, movies, browse the internet.....if that's ALL you're going to use a tablet for then the Kindle Fire does all of that just fine. Best of breed? Heck no.

But for $200 it does it just fine. And like someone else said....it fits in your hand quite nicely.

I agree with this post. I've cone to really love reading magazines and comics on my Kindle Fire. It requires a bit of an adjustment, but once made it works really well.

Amazon also has some pretty good pricing on magazines and comics. :)

I'm doing some research on the Kindle Fire ebook purchasing habits.

Can you Kindle Fire owners tell me how many ebooks (ball park is fine) you bought for the Fire:
1) first 3 months you owned the device
2) How many you think you will buy (ballpark estimate is fine) in months 4-6?

Thanks!

1- I brought two ebooks. One was on sale for less than $2.
2- if I factor in sales, probably 4-5. If I don't, 3 or so.

I also have subscribed to three magazine

Gamasutra.
1) I have bought 4 books, I think. But I was also a previous Kindle 3 Keyboard owner (since Dec 2010).

2) I will probably buy about 2-3 over the summer, at least.

By the way, some of us have had Kindle Fire's since launch. I have had it for over five months now, I think, so asking about months 4-6 is kind of weird.

I wouldn't think there would be, though they do have some wiggle room with the Nook at 50 bucks more.

You *can*, yes, nobody said otherwise. I mean, you can even read them on a smartphone if youd like. The poster asked for opinions on how the experience is. I'm not really sure if cost is a big issue or not, but most people have referenced that. But he said he's buying primarily for that reason, and gave his options, so that's what we are focused on. And the experience isn't very good by comparison. Full page just isn't as manageable, but with stuff like Guided View comics are certainly 'okay' at least. Added interaction and media with a full screen makes it not even close with a magazine though IMO.

I don't think the TV analogy is very valid really. I think that works better for, say, comparing two 10" tablets at different resolutions.

The Fire is a decent device, like was said earlier it does some things better than others and you can't do better at that price. I'm just talking about what the poster was referencing.

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
Had mine for about a month now after the $140 refurb sale and it's been an amazing value for me so far. It has replaced my cheapy home laptop in most capacities: Facebook, Twitter, browsing GAF (on the gorgeous mobile site, dark theme ftw), AIM occasionally, Gmail, been reading Game of Thrones on it (that percent counter appeals to the completionist whore in me), and the tales of comics being "unreadable" on it are exxagerated. Does it compete with the iPad3 or even 2? Hell no, but that's not really the point when you consider the price and what you get.

That said, I do have to crank the brightness to max for any outside reading and sometimes it's just plain not possible and I hate the default "carosel" homescreen and find Go Launcher the better home solution.

I think they're doing it cuz there is going to be a refresh really soon. Great price, but I almost wonder if one might be better off waiting at this point.

What a Shock, Marty is being negative in a Kindle thread.

Came here to post this. Really wondering how good this thing is...

It is a really damn enjoyable device. I use it to read comics, magazines, watch movies etc. If you have Amazon Prime it is an even better deal. I really love mine! You are not going to find a better device anywhere close to $140.

Try it. If you don't like it just send it back to Amazon.

$140 for a perfectly capable Ice-Cream Sandwich Tablet is a steal. Especially now that they've got Hardware Acceleration working with the latest roms. Had to go back to CM9.

Stock ain't so bad either.

What a Shock, Marty is being negative in a Kindle thread.

How is that negative? It makes sense for them to clear out existing stock with a new model being rumored for early to mid summer. I don't understand what's negative about suggesting someone might want to wait and see what Amazon has planned.
