Kingdom Come Deliverance - A flawed masterpiece

Great writing and atmosphere but i can't bother playing a game where i absolute dread every fight encounter because combat feel like dogshit and look like 2 bad actors trying the most fake looking swordplay in a theatre.

When you level up Henry and practice a lot with Bernard, learning riposte and masterstrike the combat becomes so much better and very immersive. In the beginning the combat is trash on purpose because Henri doesn't know shit. The game changes a lot when Henry learns how to fight

Nah it's not that, i love being an inept and getting my ass kickex in games at the beginning, it make for a great sense of progression when you get stronger, i just don't enjoy the combat at all, both visually and mechanically.

thinking of streaming it from my comp to my steamdeck after Indiana Jones. Does it play well enough on controller?

Apparently it runs good native on steamdeck

I'm not sure if they ever improved the lockpicking mechanics on controller, I recall it was much easier on keyboard and mouse. But peoples are clearly playing it on deck, so it should be well enough.

There is an option in settings to make lock picking easier when using a controller. In the beginning its a bit difficult but once you level up it becomes second nature

On PC there are mods to help with all of that. Well, combat with 1 vs many is still going to be a.m but janky, but better.

I only ever played it with a controller, no issues. PS4 version's issues were/are 30fps cap, slow loading and worse graphics. The game shines on PC.

- I remember the game being VERY slow to boot up, making you watch the whole intro while it loads.

- The one and only random encounter I experienced made me realize it isn't for controller, at least the Dualshock 4. Got stopped by two random thugs, tried killing them and found the combat clunky. I thought, "I don't think this gameplay is suited for controller, especially when dealing with >1 enemy."

I could be wrong, maybe I didn't give it a fair go, but it deterred me from playing it on PS4 again. 🤷‍♂️

I want to like KCD more but yeah the combat is unfun outside of archery (I found that you can consistently win one on many combats by running away for a second then reposting as soon as the enemy catches up because they will always attack right after) and pretty much every quest has some game breaking bug in it. You might not run into one on every quest, but they basically all have the possibility of one.

I havent had bugs in any single quest. I must be lucky I guess

- yes, on 5400rpm HDD the game loads slowly, on any SSD the loading takes couple seconds (and there are no loadings once in-game, hello Bethesda)

- the only "clunk" from controller is the lock-on, but I managed to deal with it, when you hold B it lets you choose between opponents (if I remember correctly). Since I finished the whole game in hardcore mode with controller, it wasn't a big problem

I only played it a few years after it was released so it was patched to death. The only problems were fighting multiple enemies and the save system which I modded out.

I started the game ages ago but I’m trying to finish it before the sequel arrives.

Im doing the Rocketeer quest and just got Keyser to arrive at Talmberg. I just wish th pace of the game picked up a little at this point as it seems that it is intent to give me a bunch of optional quest items that I don’t really care to do at this point (find beer and meat for the camp etc) even though I know they will probably assist with my eventual siege.

Funny things I’ve noticed:
- Doing certain quests/tasks out of order often reveals the games jank which is quite funny
- Following Keyser to Talmberg can observe him getting attacked by bandits repeadedly
- Peychar infiltrating the Talmberg camp and trying to kill keyser (while I’m randomly in discussion with someone). Watching my camp swarm him in the background and sound the alarm while I’m casually talking to someone is a sight.

The game has crashed a fair few times on PS5 which has caused me to lose progress.
Recently played on PS5 and in 45 hours, I don't recall a single crash.

What a coincidence, I just wrote this yesterday in another thread:

Vaguely related.

I've had Kingdom Come Deliverance in my library for years and never clicked.
I decided to give it another chance after my brother in law praised to it to no end to me during the Christmas dinner AND advised me to stick past the part where it bored me (the heavily scripted tutorial intro that ends with you being released in the starting citadel, basically).
I'm now fucking hooked, I've been playing this non-stop for the past week, I can clearly see why it had tons of fans past its occasional shortcomings and suddenly KCD 2 has jumped ahead and is more or less leading my "hype chart" for future releases.

lmao you were on the cohhcarnage KCD stream recently weren't ya
glad you finally saw the light
his streams are awesome btw, especially when he has his kids on and they keep asking questions about the stuff ingame xD

What really impressed me when i played it at the time was that it was trying to be everything at once. Part Bethesda game but deeper, part CDPR with story telling and staging. For a midbudget game like that that was certainly ambitious. They really managed to balance it incredibly well, it rarely seems to collide, the game always give you agency, but the story is always there with good cutscenes and all.

The combat was so shit that I dropped the game after only 45 minutes. The trailers for the sequel are making me want to get back into it though just for the labor of love they put into the medieval setting.

The game has 2 great moments:

When Henry goes to burry his parents, that was sad.

And the quest with father godwin and drinking all night was fucking awesome.

What are you talking about man? I have played it on pc for 80 hours now with a controller and it works perfectly fine

While i agree, a bit unrelated.. but locking the running button to the circle button is not a good choice, also tried it on PC and while you can change the running button to other button, you can't choose click L3 to run, really hope this is an option with KCD2, it's no fun holding the circle button for hours.

I was and I DID comment on this anecdote in the Youtube chat.

Jesus Christ, it's a small world indeed. I watched that stream for 15 minutes top.
I clicked specifically because I was curious about him playing live an old game that I was just getting hooked on.

In the beginning the combat is shit on purpose. You have to train to get better and then the combat becomes really good. I am at the endgame right now and I am the middle age John Wick. There is a very big character progression and of you judge the game by the first hour then you are making a mistake.

I still can't believe they haven't put out a 60fps patch for PS5/Series.

I own the complete edition on console, but haven't started a second of it.

A performance patch will go a long way.
Same. I got the Complete Edition a few weeks ago on PS4 because it was on a massive sale in the hopes for a patch in the future.

I bought the complete edition on Xbox recently on sale, will definitely start this one up eventually. I love the premise and I'm always happy to support a Euro Jank RPG.

Lets not forget about another major characteristic of this game, 0 woke agenda pushing, men are men, behave like men, look like men, women are women, look like women and behave like women too
How could we when people like you obsess over it? In my experience men behave like they behave and women like they do, and its as much about personality as it is about gender. Obviously you can't see it but you are just as bad as those shoving agendas down our throats. Take a deep breath, understand that people can be different, and it doesn't hurt you. The whole idea that men need to be MEN and women need to be WOMEN is why DEI started in the first place. Its morphed into a monster but it was very much needed at its inception. One day people will understand balance is everything, elevating that idea over division is profit.

Because you understand that right? Your outrage is being amplified and monetised? Right? Bunch of sheep out there. Its the same reason DEI is out of control, its as much about money now as it is about equality. In this case jobs for the 'boys'. Like a cult infiltrating the industry.

I beat it too pretty recently, for me it was a mixed bag, but i would say i liked it more than i disliked it. The advice i would give to anyone who hasnt tried it or has and was been turned off by the combat, the game does become a lot easier as you level up and progress, after a short while i was wrecking everybody. Its definitely a slow burn of a game though, if youre expecting crazy set pieces or wow moments you really wont find any here. I hope theyve fixed a lot of the issues for the sequel.

I got waylaid by 'A Woman's Lot' DLC by accident, it was a good accident though as I really enjoyed playing through it. Can't wait to play more.
Yeah I liked playing Theresa, only annoying part was trying to find those plants, had to look up where they are.
Note that this was only half of the DLC, there is second part which is a sidequest line (playing normally as Henry) later in the game, helping Johanka. That is a really really good questline that I do not recommend missing out on.

The forced camera movement gave me nausea . Can't play more than 1 hour of this game . Gave up after 40 hours , from what I seen the seconds game had this kind of camera too ,
shame .

I'm replaying this at the moment, too, and appreciate it even more than I did the first time.

First time, I didn't engage with the melee combat at all, and only used bow and arrows, for the most part. This time, I trained with Bernard for ~2 hours and feel like I actually have the hang of melee. It's satisfying and takes some skill, and I appreciate the realism in the fact that going up against more than 1 opponent is chaotic and challenging.
