Kingdom Hearts GBA, who's getting it?

Just finished after 10 minutes of playing and I must say that I'm impressed.

As matlock stated above, the animation is indeed fluid and the music is also good.

The hooded character says you'll might meet riku :0

I haven't played a Final Fantasy game since II on the NES, love disney movies, but will never play either KH or KH2.

Should I be interested?

The commercial hints at that! :P
The commercial really is full of too much stuff I feel shouldn't be shown. :P

I don't think it's revealing much, you do more than just that.

About an hour and ten minutes in...

Fuck Riku, I would much rather find Kairi first. I don't know how thrilled I am about essentially playing through what appears to be rehash of Kingdom Hearts, but I'll manage.

Good to hear, maybe I'll finally develop a sincere love for card games before Metal Gear AC!D arrives.

This is my first card-based game, so I was a little intimidated going into it. But after running through the game for about 15 minutes, I'm liking what I see. For a GBA game, it looks fantastic, and the FMV compression is easily enough tuned out.

I'm looking forward to getting into it a bit more seriously when it's not, like, nearly midnight on a work night.

It's barely a card game, it's much more of an action based RPG. The Cards just determine how hard you hit, or you select them while running around enemies to heal, or call characters. It just stops you from constantly hitting the 'SMASH!' button to kill everything, since you need to refill your cards after losing all of them, which take twice as long the next time.

Baby steps. The core elements of a card game are there. It's definitely not hard-core or anything, it doesn't take a genius to pick up on that, but the principles are laid out in a simple enough manner that I'd be able to sort through a "real" one now.

Yeah, I barely look at my cards when I'm doing melee hits. (even though I should)

Well it certaintly isn't yelling "HA! You fell into my trap card! I call upon the something of somethings! Attack!" at me :)

I'm tempted to buy the game now because it looks like a whole lotta fun. And the commercial, just like the PS2 KH, has some enticing properties...

I just got this.. The opening FMV isn't impressive at all... The sound is kinda scratchy & there are no voices... weird. The in-game graphics & music are quite nice though. I like the battle system so far.

I wish the DS had a way to go into sleep mode w/ GBA games. :-/

Bah, I don't care if it's impressive "for GBA". It wasn't impressive "for me". :D Like I said, it's the sound, not the video that is disconcerting...

I played another 40 mins or so. I don't know that I love the modular room setup yet, though I guess the original was like that. Still the need to get cards to open doors seems like it could get annoying...

A terrific battle system, however. I am so glad they didn't try to keep it isometric.

so far which are you guys liking better....this or FF 1&2?

Kingdom Hearts: COM.

But I'm not a very "good" source as I'm highly critical of the first two Final Fantasy games.

Kingdom Hearts, but I've been burnt out on the FF series since X, as I just grew tired of the same old battle system. Kingdom Hearts is still relatively fresh, and the card system does actually add a bit to the battle system. I'm honestly surprised at how well they pulled it off.

Nostalgia >*

I'm knee deep into FF1 & Zelda 2 on GBA right now. Why are old games just more fun than new games?

See, I don't think that... which is why I prefer KH:COM. FF1 and 2 are just a huge step back in terms of game design, and FF2 is damn near broke. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, though. :P

Also, I've seen so many commercials for KH:COM that it's sick :|

Familiarity is just nice... it's probably why I gravitated towards GBA so strongly. Well, familiarity and Advance Wars. :)

No, enemies chase you around maps, and you encounter them when you touch/hit hem.

Another thing of note is that depending on what card you use the following room will have more/less/different enemies and also perhaps treasure.

Hah, I didn't know that. I was wondering why the game would let you reunlock doors multiple times.

Hehehe, yeah. If you go into your menu and check "Map Cards", you'll see a description of what each card does. "Teeming Darkness", for instance, makes the next room crawl with heartless. But if you use the "Sleeping Darkness" card, every battle you enter in the next room will have sleeping enemies in it. Similarly if you use the "White Mushroom" card the next room will have all white mushrooms. If you use common treasure the next room will contain a common treasure, etc...

can u save anywhere ala ff 1&2?

yes it does, The game is broken down into rooms, so you continue at the last door you went through.

Tip: Use all of your experience points on CP.

Eh, somewhat. There's a "Quick Save" option to save anywhere, but the trick is you can only load from it once before it's erased. You also can't keep playing after a quick save as it takes you back to the main menu. Basically it's just a way to save at any point if you need to get out of the game quickly, without it being a cheating measure. Beware though, you can't save during battle at all from what I've noticed.

Traditional saves are done via save points. These appear in certain rooms (you can generate them with key cards) and in the main area.

If common practice prevails here at the GAF, "It's not on PSP, it Sucks, skip, and pass!"

It's a crushing double standard to be sure. The conspiracy will soon consume all of GAF. Beware, you cannot hide your DS love for long. We're coming to destroy you.

Just wanted to add that I'm about 7 hours in and fucking loving this game. Very impressed. Actually got me to pick up the original KH and give it another shot as well.

Why do you say things like this? Seriously...

The PSP is brand new, of course people are talking about it. The DS was heavily discussed upon release as well. Nobody has ever really said what you have suggested they did...

Anyways, I saw a bit of KH GBA. While I really disliked the first game, I was quite impressed with what this new game was doing. It seems like it could be quite good. Still, the original really hurt and is probably the most disappointing game I've played in years.

Same here. I recently restarted KH on the PS2, but really only because the GBA game is so freakin' good, and I hate playing it without having the background of the first game. The combat is just so much fun, and there is a Baten Kaitos like satisfaction to the card system (though it's quite a bit simpler than Baten Kaitos. That, combined with the real time nature of the combat, makes it much more like a traditional action rpg. Fantastic stuff.)

Dungeons still leave something to be desired, but there is a certain fun in customizing each dungeon everytime you play through it.

So, I've been stuck in the last dungeon for about 3 hours. Just battling, trying to get a level 2 card. That's all.

Alright game, listen up. I need a level 2 card to get through this doorway, alright? And for the past, well, a good chunk of my night, you've been spewing out everything but. I don't need a level 6. I don't need a level 8. Hell, I'm gonna be able to pass that "Sum of 50" doorway with no problem. So how about we just cut to the chase, and you hook me up with the level 2? Yea?

edit: 5

edit 2: 6

edit 3: 4. Sora reaches Level 53.

edit 4: 3.

edit 5: Another 4. Oops, I've cleared the room of enemies, again. Time to remake it.

edit 6: Apparently you don't understand, I don't need any more level 4 cards. I need a level 2.

edit 7: 5

edit 8: 3

edit 9: 7

edit 10: 5. Sora is now Level 54 with a Max CP of 1050 and a HP of 380.

edit 11: 3. Again. You've got 14 minutes, game.

edit 12: I don't need another 3, but thanks. A 2 would be sweet, I mean, really.

edit 13: What the hell is a Darkball. God damnit.

It's to the point where I went back to one of the earlier worlds, as the enemies are weaker and the battles go faster. You can hold up to 99 "Map" Cards. I'm at 87.

edit: Two more 3s, a 5 and an 8. I'm starting to wonder if the game is glitched.

edit: I GOT ONE! FINALLY!
