Kingdoms of Amalur demo impressions thread [Up On 360/Origin/Steam/U.S. PSN]

Went though the game twice. I'm sure as, they mentioned, this isn't final code so some of the issues listed may be fixed, others won't be though.

The demo build is a month or two old at this point. Some of the things you mention like audio, graphical glitches, blurry textures, framerate, and some camera issues are improved in the final game. The art concerns not so much, but that's more subjective and kind of limited by the scope of the demo.

Whether the game is on Steam or not (it's not as of right now BTW) doesn't contradict what I said about EA having a problem with Steam.

I beg you. Please take this elsewhere. Let's not shit up an impressions thread with a rant about all the ails of modern capitalism.

Why isn't this out yet on psn/pc? It's evening here in EU, i would like to try it.

It's not BHGs fault, apprently on the PC front they are waiting themselves for it to go up on the Origins website. As far as PSN goes, well I think we should all know that Sony updates whenever they feel like it.

NewEgg has the game up for preorder and there are promo codes for it as well cutting $12 off the price. Bringing it down to $47.99. This was posted on Amazon.com KoA:R forums.

Thanks for this. Went from day "who the hell knows" to day 1.

Got burned too many times last year at $60. For under $50, I'll bite damn near any game day 1.

I have completed the demo, how can I know if I have unlocked the ME3 weapon? The armor prompted as soon as I launched the demo, but nothing for the weapon.

Yea, I'm expecting most of it to be fixed completely or lessened. In regards to art, I really don't have an issue except for the player character models. To be fair, most games with customizable player characters, seem to have less than desirable outcomes.

Would be nice if the framerate was cleaned up in particular. The game seems to have a very nice combat system, and that can easily be ruined with a sub 30 framerate. It seems in most games to not get fixed though, hopefully I'm wrong. Either way though, depending on the pc version specs, you can brute force the framerate, unless the problem is much deeper.

The devs have been quite insistent that this is very much a "hardcore rpg". Does that stand up at all? might be hard to gauge with just a demo though.

Oh god, I hate EA so much. Can't download it here in Germany between 6 am and 11pm, because it is only for gamers 18+

Fuck you! don't tell me what I can't do!

I don't really care for the camera in this and some of the textures are not great (Though that might be better on the PC, played on 360). The combat is really fun but everything else feels like it's not quite there presentation-wise. Still, I'm really looking forward to playing through this. It's definitely more Fable than God of War. Each attack button has one weapon assigned to it and you can use different timings to execute different combos.

You can definitely see it in the gameplay systems, talent trees, mixing them up, destinies. Not so much in dialog system, and how much of an impact your choices really have. Much harder to see how deep that is in a limited demo.

So did anyone slaughter all the npcs in the town heh. I was tempted but decided not to try. Though I did break into I guess the jail, and pull a lever, guards didn't like that lol. Chased my ass forever because I wouldn't bribe them. I finally gave in.

I really like how they force me to use my shield at times without making it a nuisance. In alot of other games, I just shrug off the occasional hit if I have no fear of dying. Those Kobolds can whoop your low level butt when they arrive in packs. Use your shield or else.

I have zero hope in the "meaningful choices" department, but I hope we can at least join a few factions (haven't watched dev videos in order to avoid spoilers, so I have no idea).

Cool, thanks. I'm more interested in the mechanics side of rpgs than stories and character arcs so this sounds ideal.

"Hardcore" is a term that varies as much as "open-world" in gaming today.
It's not as hardcore as the PC rpgs I grew up with. But it's far more hardcore than the Mass Effect or Final Fantasy series. Whether or not the game has enough systemic heft and narrative joy to be enjoyable is up to the individual.

The only thing with the character models that bothers me a little is the hair and facial animations. It's probably an unfair comparison to other console games with pre-defined characters that can put a lot more effort into those areas.

If you are worried about framerate, then PC is the way to go.

Running sideways is horrible because your character just ends up at the side of the screen constantly. Running forward needs to return the camera to a default position.

Fix that and it's bought, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm the kind of guy that wants to join everyone's faction and do everything, so I'll be happy if the game doesn't bar me from doing stuff just because I became best pals with some guy.

They already said the factions are independent of eachother, and you can join every one of them.

This demo is AMAZING. Holy crap, I don't have to keep buying watered down Fable iterations, now I can play a real RPG with the same beautiful aesthetic (if not better!)

The combat is better, the areas are bigger, and this is only the freaking demo.

Thank you Based BHG and EA, please spread the word on this poorly named, but awesome RPG!

Launched the PC demo; just had to alt-tab to say congratulations to these guys for managing to not have fucked up mouse controls straight out of the box. It shouldn't be praise-worthy but even id Software can't get it right anymore. Thanks for that.

Awesome news! I know these guys are PC devs, so I didn't want to worry, but this is a relief.

Was having a ton of fun. Going to have to pick this title up eventually. Everything felt fluid, and I loved the colorful graphics.

But then it froze on me. :(

I just finished playing it and enjoyed myself. I'd like to see them tighten up the camera a bit before release though. Also the UI is...awkward. Checking inventory is a chore.

Origin WTF?

"Leider darf dieses Spiel aufgrund des Jugendschutzgesetzes in Deutschland nicht zwischen 6:00 Uhr und 23:00 Uhr heruntergeladen werden."

You are kidding me, right? I don't even live in Germany...

I just finished the demo on 360, still going to download the PS3 demo later and give it a run. I will probably play through both of them several times more before the game comes out, I really liked what I played. It's like someone took the parts I love from Fable, Darksiders, World of Warcraft and Torchlight (loot!) and mashed them all together.

I played as a rogue and I found the stealth & combat to be really fun, especially considering I had all of 2 skills unlocked. I love that the enemies are set up in "camps" or spawn points and wander a little bit like in WoW. The art style reminded me a lot of WoW, and the world felt open like it too. The camera took a little getting used to, it seemed a little too quick or twitchy at first, but I got used to it.

Did anyone notice screen tearing in the 360 demo? I couldn't tell if that's what I was noticing, it may have just been the quick pan speed of the camera. I was probably going to buy this game anyway, but now I'm way more excited about it. Can't wait to see some bigger dungeons!

And EA fails again. I can't download the game because of the German law.
I live in fucking Austria. Thanks for nothing EA, gotta use a proxy.

That's crazy talk. Making enemies is fun! Instant replay value :D

(Factions are in, I'm happy)
