Kirby: First Killer App for DS?

If any of you out there has finished it, what does the total gameplay time clock in at?

I've pretty much loathed all previous Kirbys but this one sounds cool.

*passes out*

Capcom *NEEDS* to port that. Control the mech with the control pad, push the buttons on the touch screen. Instabuy for me if something like that would ever come out.

WILL YOU LISTEN TO ME CAPCOM?

edit: I think that the whole Tekki project was Microsoft sponsored :|

Argh, too much shit to do at work to respond to a sashimitroll and the president of the Nintendo handheld defense force.

But real quick -- I wasn't talking about June. I'm talking about the drought. June obviously ISN'T the drought. The drought months begin in Jan and effectively end in June.

So why don't we take a look at the bullshit in between Jan. and June. If you take the "triple A" releases in that time period, you get Yoshi, Wario, Polarium, Pac-Pix, and Egg Monster Hero.

Yoshi and Wario -- maybe, but neither game lasted more than a week's worth of play time and curiosity. Polarium I haven't tried but at this point, I'm feeling all puzzled out with Lumines and Meteos -- and assuming folks bought Zoo Keeper out of desperation early this year, they might feel the same. Pac-Pix -- more novelty than game. Egg Monster Hero -- maybe -- I haven't played it.

So okay, maybe 4 worthy games at most -- two of which lack legs; one of which is yet ANOTHER puzzle game, and... one that's an X factor. :)

1 post pointing out how much you have "bashed" (sorry not "trolling" since your opinion means more than mine of course) the DS and I am a masterful troll?

Meteos, Yoshi, Wario, Mr. Driller, Metroid= Che's Shit list??

I 100% Agree

Lets give this handheld race a few more months until we start with the (oh yeah bannable if you dont get paid to be an Xbox fan) Nitnendo DS is doomed-chespace quotes. Thanks

No, masterful in that you were trolling for a response and I obliged. It was textbook dude. You're good.

I found Wario terribly contrived, no thanks to the touchscreen. Metroid isn't out. Mr. Driller, uh, no thanks. Yoshi was good but gimme an adventure mode, thanks.

Up against the PSP in the long haul, the DS will continue to slide... and as a result, Nintendo will continue to lose mindshare in the handheld market. It's not good. Thanks.

Isn't this a given, whether you think the DS is a great handheld or not?

Nintendo had an effective lock on the handheld market. Sony entered the handheld market. Nintendo loses mindshare.

This loss of mindshare/marketshare is altogether unavoidable regardless of game quality, etc. It's simple mathematics.

Now how much mindshare Nintendo loses is another story.

'Mindshare' should be on GAF's banned words list, I'm fucking sick of hearing it applied to everything.

You seem to forget a whole line of would-be competitors to the Game Boy dynasty that did squat to Nintendo's mindshare, even on a pure mathematic level.

My point is, they're fucked now because it's Sony and because it's the PlayStation brand.

What about Puyo Fever or NFSU2? Both look like pretty decent interpretations actually, Puyo being the best handheld version even.

WCP seems to be getting a bit of attention too. Definitely looks worth it for those who like card/gambling games.

I'd agree, the drought's been too long and the majority of decent games being puzzle/minigame focused doesn't help... but there's been more than one worthwhile release in 5 months. This isn't N64.

Game Gear did rather well, selling about 9-10 million units. Compared to Game Boy's 50 million or so, it was proportionately a more significant competitior than Xbox or GameCube have proven this generation.

I wonder why when talking about Game Boy competitors, Game Gear's modest success and Sega's (at the time) dominating brand are almost always forgotten?

Agreed. And we all new it was going to happen, even Nintendo admitted that their market share would decrease when a serious contender like Sony took aim at the handheld market.

All this because Sony had an okay launch with the PSP?? It's laughable that everyone is already jumping to conclusions, but then again, what would this forum be without conclusion jumping? I seem to remember another graphical juggernaut, the Dreamcast, that seemed to have a great launch, and as we all know it went on to dominate the industry.

I'd certainly agree that the touch screen is more important... but since getting the DS it seems more to me that the dual screen is more an obvious thing. They seem to have decided that a flipping system for screen protection is the way to go, so if they decide to make a wide system there's going to be plenty of extra space to work with on the flipped-up portion... and there are fewer ways that extra space could be better used than to double the amount of screen you have.

Despite the fact that all previous Kirby's were extremely easy, I had a lot of fun with them. I can't wait to see what Hal's done with the series as it's been ages since I've played an original Kirby game (how many times has the original Kirby been rehashed?).

EDIT: Oh, and for future reference, I suggest you check out this equation I created especially for you, Jarrod:

I work at home and GAF's something of a bad habit/addiction. I just landed a grant to collaberate with rather significant writer on a project so I'll likely be asking Mr. Works for a temp ban soon again.

Not that any sort of justification should really be demanded from anyone for the time they spend on this board. What have you contributed "to life" recently?

Nah, it shouldn't, but you were insecure enough to indulge me regardless. Besides saving 3 kittens from a tree, 2 young boys from certain death after they'd fallen through the ice on a river, and taking control of 3 third world countries, all within the past 2 days, I guess I haven't contributed much to life :(

Yeah, I do kind of turn myself on in an Angelina Jolie sort of way.

I count at least 1 for the GBA. Are you gonna take my word for it, or would you like me to draw up another equation that'll properly demonstrate the obvious?

EDIT: Before one of us gets banned for completely destroying an otherwise great thread, I'd just like to say one thing: Jarrod, I would to take a peak at your former/current signifigant others. If you consider me feminine, then I think your standards/sexuality need adjustment :).

If your definitition of employed extends only to working for someone else. Which I do occasionally on a contract basis as well.

If your definition of "the original Kirby" extends only to first Kirby ever made. In which case, it has been ported to the GBA via piracy.

I really like the DS but wow...that list just reconfirmed the lack of good games for DS until summer. :(
I'm interested in is Egg Monster Heroes...if it's actually good. And Kirby after reading this thread. And perhaps Meteos and Bomberman DS. But those are all games I may pick up when they're cheap or similar, not really must-haves. But I guess it's like this with all new consoles/handhelds...

By the way, hasn't Another Code and that court game been confirmed for a US release before summer? Those are actually the two games I have most interest during the upcoming months. And that survival game, Lost in Blue (?)? Is it coming to the US, and in that case when?

Another Code is coming, but no date. Gyakuten Saiban is due here in July followed by Lost in Blue in August.

Bomberman DS will definitely be on my game grocery list, and this thread has instilled a wee bit of hype in me for Kirby, so the outlook's not too bad. I'm just glad the wait and see approach has really been effective with the PSP and DS thus far.

While Kirby and Yoshi are really great games that every DS owner needs to have, it doesn't change my feelings that the DS is a waste of money (mainly in all this crappy software) and the worst system I've ever bought. When you spend $50 on a DS game and you're bored of it within 2 hours and never play it again...well it sucks. Especially when it keeps happening with each release. When PSP games cost less and on average lasts 15+ hours with great visuals and audio, it just makes getting let down by DS releases even worse.

In Japan if they dropped the DS software prices to $30-35 I'd like the system a bit more. But it never happened with GBA games and I doubt it'll happen here.

Usually closer to the $40-45 price point vs. DS's constant $50 for every game.

Well on PSP, give MGA a try (~24 hours for main story + good replay value), Lumines lasts for quite a while, Ridge Racers will take you about 10-15 hours to beat all the courses. When Hot Shots Golf hits the US, that's like 20-30 hours easily if you want all the courses/items.

Is there a special Nintendo tax in your area or something? DS games are usually 4800 (or 4320 with the usual reductions) while PSP games are 5040 (4500) The only remotely expensive DS games are third party titles that cost the same as PSP games.

I do agree completely that all the PSP games have much more volume than the DS games, but that is something I really don't mind because I like short, sharp games these days.

I'm nearing the 30 hour mark on MGA and I still haven't beaten it. But that's because I've been trying to get S grades (no kills, no alerts, and fast) on all the levels. Very very very very hard. I think it might actually be impossible on some of them to not get seen and not kill guards.

Well I don't have any really nice discount stores up here. All my DS games run up at the register as 4800, whereas the PSP games like Dynasty Warriors/Popolocrois are 4500. Not too mention PSP has it's share of lower priced releases with Mojipittan, Namco Museum, and Lumines all running under 4000yen. Where are the cheaper 4000yen DS games?

One of the usual gamefaqs posters put 99 hours into the import since he went for a complete card collection and all S ranks.

Personally I never went for ratings on my first run through. I took the easier, kill every enemy in the area and then search for card packs, route. I think I killed every enemy in the game actually :)

This might be a side effect of your location, I don't know. I'm really surprised the shops are discounting PSP software but not Nintendo software - maybe it's just because they can get away with it. Don't you have stores like Bic Camera or Sakuraya? They usually discount everything, not just PSP games.

:lol ^^;

We have miles of fields and then every 2-3 cities/villages/towns will get 1 Jusco mall to share for all their shopping needs. Luckily my town is the closest one to the mall and there's a denkodo/wondergoo electronic/game store attatched to it.

:lol That would explain the 25 hour total time too. I should probably just beat the game before I get bored with it.

There's a few actually.

Hitofude~ 3800 yen
Zoo Keeper~ 3900 yen
Mahjong Takai~ 3800 yen

So does Kirby kick Yoshi's ass or what?

I love the Yoshi DS game (im not having all the control problems everyone is talking about, I dont think I have ever drawn a cloud when I meant to shot or vice versy).

I would like some more impressions from somebody further along in the game, forget about my earlier posts I was a little drunk...

I played Kirby a lot this weekend and I'm on the final boss now. The boss itself is kick ass and has some really good music. It's pretty hard though. The levels in the 6th and 7th world got quite tricky, and some of the medals are going to be a total pain in the ass to get.

I don't know if I'll bother with all that collecting though, I just want to finish the game for now.
